Cathedral of Faith Upgrades to Full HD Broadcast Capability with FOR-A Video Switcher

Fort Lee, N.J. – FOR-A Corporation of America, a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, announces that San Jose, California-based Cathedral of Faith has implemented a FOR-A HVS-350HS video switcher as part of their HD overhaul. The church’s system was recently converted to HD in two phases and integrated by the Texas-based company Spectaveris.

Besides their main location in San Jose, Cathedral of Faith has seven remote locations around the San Francisco Bay area. Each week, the main church’s Saturday service is recorded, duplicated onto hard drives, and sent by car to each remote church. The sermon is then shown at each remote campus church using ProPresenter technology. Cathedral of Faith also broadcasts its services online at and has live HD feeds to the church’s outdoor pavilion every Sunday morning. All church services, which include five on the weekend, one midweek service, and a Spanish service on Sunday, are recorded. DVDs of the services are also available to the congregation for purchase.

Broadcasting since 1965, Cathedral of Faith first worked with Spectaveris to upgrade their system to standard definition six years ago. When called upon this year to convert the church to HD production, Spectaveris discovered some initial design challenges. First, they had to work around the church’s weekly broadcast schedule. The integrator also needed to consider that the vast majority of the church’s production staff were volunteers, so keeping a user-friendly workflow was crucial. There was also the usual challenge of delivering high-quality technology while keeping within the church’s budget.

Spectaveris began equipment selection for the church in April at the NAB 2012 show. Company representatives met with several vendors to choose the switcher that best fit Cathedral of Faith’s needs. After considerable competitive evaluation, Spectaveris found that FOR-A’s HVS-350HS solution met their criteria better than any other switcher on the market. Because they were able to implement the HVS-350HS with two control panels and two multiviewers, one FOR-A switcher replaced the two switchers that the church had been using.

“FOR-A’s HVS-350HS solution is the only switcher out there that offers such a high-quality, cost-effective product with flexible control panels and remote capability control,” said Dean Stone, President, Spectaveris. “Our installations frequently include FOR-A switchers. We continually find that our customers are extremely pleased with the performance of their switcher, and are confident that FOR-A will keep bringing high-quality, reliable solutions to the market.”

The FOR-A switcher was installed this past September during the first phase of the church’s upgrade. The second phase, which involved integrating and testing new cameras and reducing rack size, was executed a few months later. Other equipment installed includes: a Sony OLED picture monitor, Mutec video and digital audio sync master clock generator and a Dell UltraSharp LCD monitor. The project was completed mid-November, and Cathedral of Faith now has full HD broadcast capability. To view a video regarding the church’s upgrade with Spectaveris, please visit the following link:

Squint/Opera Finds Rendering Edge in PipelineFX’s Qube!

Render Farm Management Software Gives a Speed Boost to Content Creation Firm’s Architectural, Branding, Film, and Large Image Projects

Los Angeles, CA – January 29, 2012 – As the world’s appetite for content grows more and more insatiable, creative powerhouses like London’s Squint/Opera are finding their logistical edge in the most logical of places: pipeline management. With the help of PipelineFX’s render farm management software Qube!™, Squint/Opera has recently rewired their pipeline to put speed, performance and task order first – a move that has transformed an under-utilized system into a venerable powerhouse of its own.

This move to Qube! began after a company-modified version of Backburner couldn’t exceed the bar the studio sets for the litany of film, image, branding, interactive and architectural communications projects it works on. Qube!’s ability to automatically manage V-Ray’s distributed rendering service actually lured the company away from other options as it fulfilled Squint/Opera’s need to keep their machines constantly working on customized tasks, like rendering film sequences and stills side by side, even when they required varying degrees of automatic and sometimes non-complimentary adjustments.

“We don’t always use 3ds Max, NUKE or V-Ray in the standard ways,” said Ryan Lintott, Director of Technology at Squint/Opera. “PipelineFX’s support staff has been there throughout it all making sure that our desire for customization easily maps to an efficient render pipeline.”

And that pipeline works hard, as it’s asked to create everything from detailed graphic animations used to entice V&A patrons to explore the role of Hollywood costume design to large format 3D visualizations that helped the architects behind London’s Olympics stadium get the critical feedback they needed to get their design approved and built. Qube!, being highly compatible with all major forms of design software, became something of a hall monitor for these projects – actively directing and enhancing the speed at which a project gets from point one to done. “We use it on every project in the office,” added Lintott. “It keeps people away from rendering locally and wasting valuable time that could be used working on the next phase of a project.”

As profits are highly linked to rendering efficiency, Squint/Opera’s decision to employ a tool like Qube! adds up pretty quickly. “It’s easy to see the before and after with a product like Qube!,” says Lintott. “Our projects can be complex, so when you see new versions getting handed in faster and big declines in farm errors, you know something is working. That’s what we were looking for and that’s what we found.”

LOGAN and Conscious Minds Bring Calvin Johnson, Alex Morgan, Neymar Jr. and Allyson Felix into Animated Games for Nike+

View Media

LOGAN plunges Nike+ users into a spectacular post-apocalyptic ice storm of a world with two 6:00, fully CG, stylized character-animated games featuring a cast of top athletes – NFL receiver Calvin Johnson, soccer players Alex Morgan and Neymar Jr., and sprinter Allyson Felix – and promoting a new line of weather-resistant clothing. LOGAN, which collaborated with Conscious Minds on the project, handled an incredible array of character design, modeling, matte painting, character and environment animation, dynamics and final compositing.

Players with a Nike+-activated device choose a mission and navigate the stages using one of the athletes as an avatar. Real-life challenges intertwine with the gameplay, creating a unique interactive experience between the player and the game. “We tried to make every shot and environment as engaging as we could so that the user felt compelled to go through with the physical challenge and see the whole story unfold,” stated LOGAN Art Director Ara Devejian.

LOGAN paid special attention to designing and animating the apparel and shoes, interpreting Nike’s references to a number of dramatic films framed comic book style to properly frame and stylize the game footage. In the same spirit, LOGAN took great care to design suped-up versions of the well-known athletes without rendering them unrecognizable.

“We worked back and forth to find a balance between the stylization and recognition of the characters, pushing the boundaries in collaboration with the agency, and then pulling them back to find a level that Nike and the athletes were comfortable with,” continued Devejian. “Once we got the look hammered out, we used a lot of low, wide, dramatic framings and tweaks in the apparel to play up their heroic qualities.”

Rapidly building four distinct worlds to house the games took a monumental collaborative effort across the studio. The VFX team, led by VFX Supervisor Julien Brami, created a system of matte paintings, camera projections and limited camera movements that cut production into a fraction of the time it would’ve taken otherwise. “Building four worlds quickly and concurrently was an incredible undertaking, but this is the sort of creative problem solving that guides everything we do,” stated LOGAN ECD Alexei Tylevich.

Touch Points:

  • LOGAN teams up with Conscious Minds, the creative agency who directed, wrote and produced NIKE FUEL MISSIONS, to design a pair of animated games for Nike+.
  • Game features NFL receiver Calvin Johnson, soccer players Alex Morgan and Neymar Jr., and sprinter Allyson Felix.
  • LOGAN handles all character design, modeling, matte painting, character and environment animation, dynamics and final compositing on the effort.
