Blackmagic Design Releases DaVinci Resolve 9.1 with Support for Retina Displays

Blackmagic Design Releases DaVinci Resolve 9.1 with Support for Retina Displays

Fremont, CA – January 18, 2013 – Blackmagic Design today announced a major release of DaVinci Resolve 9.1, the latest update to the world’s most advanced color correction tool. DaVinci Resolve 9.1 enables customers to use Resolve with Apple’s Macbook Retina technology, the world’s highest resolution notebook display. Retina based notebooks have quickly become one of the most popular tools in the post production world, and with 9.1, DaVinci Resolve will be able to run on the 15” Retina MacBook Pro at the best image quality setting.

DaVinci Resolve 9.1 also features support in XML for FCP X Audition, a popular feature in FCP X which provides the ability to stack and scroll through multiple shots in a single location in a timeline, allowing Resolve users to easily transfer files between the systems for a highly efficient workflow. Improvements in mixed frame rate XML integration will allow better workflows between Resolve, FCP X and Final Cut Pro 7 projects. DaVinci Resolve 9.1 also supports improvements for Avid AAF, Sony XAVC and AVC-Intra files and a number of audio and performance improvements.

The new DaVinci Resolve 9.1 also includes an exciting enhancement for the CinemaDNG file format, as used by cameras such as the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. DaVinci Resolve now includes a CinemaDNG Input Device Transform (IDT) for grading RAW images in full ACES workflows.

DaVinci Resolve 9.1 can also now be used with the DeckLink 4K Extreme, Blackmagic Design’s newest addition to the DeckLink family of PCI Express capture cards. DeckLink 4K Extreme includes all the features of the popular DeckLink HD Extreme 3D card, plus UltraHD 4K playback, which is four times the resolution of 1080HD video.

DaVinci Resolve 9.1 is the latest version of the recently introduced DaVinci Resolve 9, which includes a completely redesigned user interface to optimize workflow speed. This significant user interface overhaul was created to harness the power of multiple new technologies added to DaVinci Resolve in the last few years, including automatic 3D eye matching, multi layering timelines, XML support, plus more camera and file type support. The new user interface is extremely fast to use and eliminates unnecessary clicks and settings. A job can be up and running in three clicks: one to log in, one to drop media into the project and the next to grade.

DaVinci Resolve 9.1 features include:

Support for Apple Macbook Retina technology.
Support in XML for FCP X Audition.
Improved XML integration for better workflows between Resolve, FCP X and Final Cut Pro 7.
Integration with DeckLink 4K Extreme.
Includes CinemaDNG Input Device Transform (IDT) for grading Raw images in ACES workflows.
Ability to generate new AAF for MXF audio renders.
Improved chase audio feature allowing specification in either frames or seconds.
Support for timeline audio when PowerMastering.
Playback support for Sony Raw F55/F5 files.
Improved rendering times for Sony CineAlta SStP files.
Playback support for the Red Mysterium-X Monochrome sensor (software decode only).
Playback and render support for DNxHD 100.
New ASC CDL metadata extraction from ARRIRAW headers.
Matte clips can now be assigned to multiple clips in the Media Pool.
Red Rocket can now be disabled from Preferences.
NTSC DV playback supports both 4X3 and 16×9 aspect ratios.

FUJIFILM Delivers 10 FUJINON PL 19-90 Cabrio Lenses to TCS

Top New York Camera Rental House Finds Strong Demand for Innovative Zoom

Wayne, N.J. – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division is announcing that TCS—a leading camera rental house in New York City—took delivery of 10 new FUJINON PL19-90 Cabrio (ZK4.7×19) PL mount zoom lenses soon after they became available. Established in 1978, TCS rents digital and film camera equipment and lenses to customers shooting motion pictures, scripted television series, documentaries, reality shows, commercials, and other high-profile projects.

Introduced at the 2012 NAB Show, the PL 19-90 is one of the newest members of the FUJINON PREMIER PL digital cinematography family. With a 19-90mm focal range and weight of only 2.7kg with servo, this lens has the longest focal range available in a lightweight zoom. It features an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making it suitable for use as a standard PL lens or as an ENG-style lens. The PL 19-90 can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers, as well as existing Fujinon wired and wireless units. Whether you are from a film background or a video one, the Premier PL 19-90 offers uncompromising quality and unprecedented flexibility.

“When we first saw this lens at NAB, we were extremely impressed with its focal length, size, and T-stop—all in a lightweight, compact form factor,” said Erik Schietinger, president of TCS who co-owns the company with his brother, TCS’ VP and Chief Operating Officer, Oliver Schietinger. “There’s no other lens on the market like it. As soon as the Cabrio lenses came in the door, they went right out on a variety of production projects, including documentaries, reality TV shows, and commercials.”

“Jay-Z: Made in America,” a documentary currently in production was among the first TCS customers to rent and use the new FUJINON PL 19-90 Cabrio lenses. This documentary, which is being directed by Ron Howard who co-produced the film with legendary Rapper Jay-Z, features footage from the “Budweiser Made in America” music festival, held in September this year in Philadelphia. The two-day festival featured four large stages for performances by many music icons, including Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Pearl Jam.

“Our digital cinema and broadcast production customers keep coming back for these lenses,” said Erik Schietinger. “We have our sights set on buying several of the latest Cabrio lenses – the new 85-300mm.” With a focal length of 85-220mm at T2.9 and 300mm at T4.0, and a 200-degree focus rotation, the new PL Mount zoom lens (model ZK3.5×85) is ideal for shooting documentaries, nature and wildlife, car commercials, among other demanding types of production.

According to Thom Calabro, Director, Marketing and Product Development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division, “Cinematographers like that these lenses accept industry-standard cine motors and matte boxes, while videographers appreciate the ENG style servo drive,” Calabro said. “All camera operators appreciate a digital cinema quality lens that’s lightweight and ergonomic enough to be used in a dynamic, handheld mode—a breakthrough that will revolutionize high-end productions.”

The PL 19-90 covers 31.5mm sensor diagonal size on a digital cinema style camera. While sensors on standard broadcast cameras are all the same size, sensors on digital cine cameras vary greatly. This ensures the image captured will cover the latest large sensors for optimal, full-frame resolution. A nine-blade iris part of the design as well, creating the most natural-looking imagery possible.

The lens has all the lens data output that appeals to a Cine-style shooter. LDS and /i metadata compatibility is very useful when you want to record the position information of zoom, iris and focus for computer animation and other uses. The digital servo on the PL 19-90 has 16-bit encoding, so operators can be assured that all lens data output is extremely accurate. The data is available at the Hot Shoe mount, or a connector located on the servo.

The other Premier PL Mount Series lenses for 4K+ cameras are available in 14.5-45mm T2.0, 18-85mm T2.0, 24-180mm T2.6, and 75-400 mmT2.8-T3.8.

WeLovePost Grades Filipino Film “El Presidente” with DaVinci Resolve

Fremont, CA – January 18, 2013 – Blackmagic Design today announced that DaVinci Resolve color correction was used by Manila based post production company WeLovePost for “EI Presidente,” a biopic film about General Emilio Aguinaldo, the first president of the Philippine Republic. The film tells the story of how the Philippines achieved independence and stars E.R. Ejercito in the lead role, with Cesar Montano, Christopher de Leon, Nora Aunor and Cristine Reyes in supporting roles.

As one of the leading post houses in Manila, WeLovePost approached the post production process with its core team: Post Producer Maia Yambao Lopez, Editor and Chief Technology Office Jason Cahapay, Editor Ryan Orduna and Colorist Jam Jimenez. With a post production infrastructure completely built around Blackmagic Design’s products, WeLovePost relied on DaVinci Resolve, as well as Blackmagic Design’s Studio Videohub router, DeckLink HD Extreme 3D capture and playback card, UltraScope waveform monitoring and various Mini Converters.

“The director wanted the look of the film to really stand out, so we went against the natural look of the material. The warm daylight scenes were graded to look cold and uninviting, almost as if they were set during winter. Most of the battle scenes were done this way because it made the fighting a little bit more unsettling,“ said Jam. “Nighttime provided a bit of refuge for the characters as this was the time for them to rest and plan their next move. These scenes were therefore graded to look warm and even soothing at times. The multitude of tools offered by DaVinci Resolve allowed me to really attack each shot and each sequence in different ways to achieve consistency, despite going directly against the tones that the camera captured.”

“DaVinci Resolve handles formats from various digital sources with ease and plugs right into our existing infrastructure. We think it’s the best color grading solution out there, and it keeps getting better and better,” said Jason. “When grading ‘El Presidente,’ we were allowed to play with different looks as long as they were unique, which meant we had a somewhat freehand in doing the final look for the movie.

“Every project that comes in our door brings different challenges, and it’s these challenges that make our job exciting. For this project, we had to tweak our workflow to accommodate terabytes of DPX files,” he continued. “File management was also a challenge, and Resolve was our primary tool for generating offline dailies and conforming back to the raw DPX timeline prior to grading. It was an improvised media management procedure, and we couldn’t have done it without Resolve.”
