Digital Nirvana Provides 2012 Corporate Social Responsibility Year-in-Review

2012 efforts focused on educating children, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and reducing domestic violence

Newark, CA – Digital Nirvana, a provider of monitoring, management and compliance systems for broadcast, cable, and satellite networks, announces details of the company’s corporate social responsibility program this year.

Vibha, a non-profit company dedicated to helping Digital Nirvana has supported domestic violence victim advocacy non-profit organization Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments (SAVE) and sponsored an international amateur online photography contest, Kalakaar 2012, to benefit impoverished children in India. The photography contest was organized by underprivileged children who Digital Nirvana has been involved with for a variety of programs. Digital Nirvana also sponsored the annual breakfast fundraiser for Abode Services, an organization that provides housing and services to homeless people and works to end the cycle of homelessness. In 2012, Digital Nirvana also helped support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, Alameda County Library Foundation, child development agency Kidango and The Akshay Patra Foundation, U.S.A.

This year, Digital Nirvana worked with Vibha to sponsor a contest called Kalakaar – a word that translates to “artist” in Hindi. Proceeds from the international online photography competition benefitted children in need. Digital Nirvana pledged to donate one dollar for every photograph submitted, and when Kalakaar ended in mid-November, the project had raised $5,250 and gotten 13,720 ‘likes’ on Facebook. U-T TV Adopts Integrated Media Strategy, Relies on JVC ProHD Cameras for News Coverage

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced that U-TV TV, the in-house television station for U-T San Diego, the newspaper previously known as The San Diego Union-Tribune, is using six GY-HM790 ProHD cameras for ENG and studio work.

Manchester Lynch Integrated Media, which purchased the Tribune in late 2011, built the U-T TV operation from scratch earlier this year. Housed on an upper floor of the U-T San Diego facility, the studio houses three sets and is used to produce 12 hours of live programming each day.

“Our studio was built with an open floor plan and actually is in the middle of the U-T San Diego news floor,” explained Paul Forgét, U-T TV production supervisor. “Part of our morning set looks directly into that newsroom as the background. It’s an appropriate backdrop for the blending of print, television, and Web, which exemplifies the new strategy of an integrated media platform.”

The station covers news from all of San Diego County (DMA #28). Programming is available on the Web at utsandiego.com, and is also available to AT&T U-verse and Cox Cable subscribers. Forgét believes the multi-platform approach will likely become a benchmark for other media outlets.

Five of the GY-HM790 cameras are used for ENG coverage, while one is used in the studio as a handheld unit during broadcasts. “JVC cameras provide the ease of use and reliability needed to quickly acquire and ingest content,” Forgét said. “JVC cameras are a known quantity in the industry. We did well to choose them.”

U-T TV was quick to embrace JVC’s native file recording to non-proprietary SDHC media cards. “I could not imagine ever using tape as media again,” Forgét noted. “Working with SDHC cards gives U-T TV the ability to acquire and manage media quickly and efficiently. The .MOV file format is a no-brainer. It simply allows us to operate at max efficiency with our NLE.”

Forgét said U-T TV’s shooters are also pleased with the performance of the ProHD cameras in the field. “We are very satisfied with the image quality of the GY-HM790s. I never get complaints about these rigs. They work both ergonomically and handle content transfer with great efficiency,” he added. “In the end, it’s about telling a story – and JVC rigs allow us to do this well.”

Professional Wireless Systems Completes Studio Upgrade in the Windy City

CHICAGO, DECEMBER 19, 2012—Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, recently completed a quality assurance review and upgrades to the state-of-the-art WMAQ-TV studio located in downtown Chicago.

Earlier this year, the Steve Harvey show moved into the WMAQ-TV studios inside NBC Tower. Since PWS previously installed the wireless solutions at the studio, it was tasked with conducting several modifications and upgrades to the system. “Steve Harvey has a lot more gear, especially since they have an additional six to eight people using IFBs,” says John Garrido, PWS. “Due to the show’s relocation, WMAQ asked us to check their system to ensure everything was working properly and was up to par, since they were moving the shows and studios around. We had some tweaks and made certain the studio’s capabilities were on the same level from before the move.”

In addition, PWS provided a custom RF remote panel to accommodate outdoor shoots. The team modified antennas near a window, allowing the production team to easily enable/disable set levels for outdoor wireless capabilities. “We customized it to give them more control to turn on/off from a remote location,” adds Garrido. “If they want to shoot outside, they can simply flip a switch, making it much easier. Now, Steve Harvey or someone on his team can go outside and interview people on the street.”

WMAQ-TV is the NBC owned-and-operated television station in Chicago. It maintains primary studios and business offices at the NBC Tower in the Streeterville neighborhood and operates an auxiliary street-level studio at 401 North Michigan Avenue, on the Magnificent Mile. Vista Systems’ Spyders and J3 Productions LLC Team Visually Energize ABC Election Night 2012 Set

As if Election Night 2012 wasn’t exciting enough, TV and cable networks pulled out all the stops and spared no expense to generate visually compelling election results programming. At ABC, having Vista Systems’ Spyders in the house meant easy image delivery to a dynamic set designed for hosts Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos working from a studio at the epicenter of New York City’s Times Square.

John Mims, of J3 Productions LLC in Austin, Texas, once again chose the powerful Spyder platform to manage digital video signal distribution and pixel mapping for the background video displays seen on the ABC set. Mims selected two Spyder X20 1608 systems running in a parallel configuration to handle Election Night tasks.

The Spyders fed imagery to a number of destinations on the set. A seamless video wall, comprised of 27 60-inch Sharp monitors in a 9×3 configuration, formed an atmospheric background for the news anchors. “I took three HD cameras fixed on three points in Times Square – the Reuters’ sign, the NASDAQ sign and ABC’s outside reader board – and blended them and overlapped them to get a soft border effect for the outdoor atmosphere of this large, beautiful canvas,” Mims explains.

The Spyders also fed seven 60-inch Sharp displays, which were rotated 90 degrees and seamlessly joined to create a roughly 4:1 aspect ratio used as a background image for a panel of expert political analysts. “The studio initially thought that creating seven media files rotated to feed the wall was going to be a challenge with media production,” he says. “Because of Spyder’s processing ability I was able to propose another more cost-effective method. Once sold on the idea, I designed a media template for the ABC designers to run with.”

Mims resolved the issue by simply creating media at the native resolution of all the displays combined and then applying that media to a custom pixel space matching that resolution. “This worked flawlessly, and the studio was impressed with the amiable capabilities of the Spyders’ mapping engine to handle the seven rotated outputs,” he points out. “The Spyders’ superior pixel mapping ability made applying content simple, streamlined and very effective.”

Additionally, the Spyders delivered content to a Barco NX 4mm LED wall in a circular shape, which displayed an interactive map of the national polling results. “The main challenge of this application was the angle from which the floor was seen on camera,” says Mims. “It’s natural, when viewing or shooting LED from extreme angles, that the eye doesn’t comprehend all sub RGB pixels in each LED pixel. In most cases, depending on the angle and content, the images look cyan or magenta. Our solution for this problem was to stretch a rear projection surface across the screen to create a flat, evenly colored surface for the camera to shoot. The result was a stunning mix of creativity and technology in a simple form.”

Finally, the Spyder duo fed an Everbrighten 5mm LED wall, which formed a header completely rimming the upper section of the set.

German Systems Integrator Broadcast Solutions Selects Axon 3G Glue for Two New Outside Broadcast Vehicles for Russia

Netherlands-based AV conversion, processing and compliance recording specialist, AXON Digital Design, has been selected by leading German systems integration company, Broadcast Solutions GmbH, to provide Synapse modular processing equipment for two new high definition (HD) outside broadcast (OB) vehicles.
The 3Gb/s capable vehicles have been commissioned by Russian broadcast systems company, ANO Sports Broadcasting and will add to its extensive mobile production facilities that are being developed to support the broadcast of the forthcoming Olympic Winter Games in Russia.
One vehicle is configured as a large master control room for ANO Sports Broadcasting’s extensive fleet of OB trucks with five discrete areas providing feed/line control, supervisor area, server control, audio control and a main technical area. A second support vehicle contains a complete flight-case based eight-camera production unit. Also, the vehicle includes a 2.4 meter SNG System.
In both trucks, Axon has installed a number of different 3Gb/s capable broadcast glue modules from its Synapse range. These will fulfill a range of signal processing requirements from analogue video D/A to dual-channel up conversion.
All basic SD/HD up, down and cross signal conversion and synchronization – the fundamental glue that binds together the vehicles’ production workflows – is supported by Axon’s GXGO10 module. The GXG010 is a low latency up, down, cross converters with 16 channel audio transparency. The GXG010 are compatible with 270Mb/s,1.5Gb/s and 3Gb/s for full 1080p/50 or 1080p/59.94 use.
Another key component in the vehicle’s production workflow is the Axon GQW220 quad split modules since within the MCR vehicle they control 160 picture feeds which are simultaneously viewed over a bank of ten 47-inch monitors.
The GQW220 is a high-quality 4x 3Gb/s or HD or SD-SDI (in any combination) to QWXGA converter based on DVI or 3Gb/s HD SDI output. The unit supports resolutions up to 1920×1200 resolution and a Tally and UMD OSD is also included. This advanced feature set enables a very compact monitor solution with the UMD and Tally as part of the set. Time code support is also included. It supports LTC, SNTP, ATC and VITC standards. Axon developed de-interlacing and scaling algorithms ensure crisp picture quality.

Already, ANO Sport has a good experience in using Axon equipment for other projects, so they made a clear decision to integrate Axon technology in this project. The result is that, at the next Olympic Winter Games Axon will be the main supplier of infrastructure equipment used for the broadcast coverage.
