MPC NY, Reinforcing Creative, Brings in Digital CD Estis from B-Reel

MPC NY, the versatile creative studio, has fortified its credentials with the addition of David Estis as its new creative director of digital. Estis, who joins the studio from B-Reel, is a multidisciplinary creative specializing in motion, experiential, and interactive design. In his new position, Estis will focus on integrating digital, design, and broadcast VFX for agency and direct-to-brand clients.

“Since opening the NY office last year, we’ve made a concerted effort to build a fully integrated shop and to avoid creating a compartmentalized internal structure with various, disconnected divisions. Someone like David, with a strong history in traditional design-driven work and an extremely impressive portfolio of interactive and digital work, helps build a strong foundation for this approach,” stated MPC NY MD Justin Lane. “He’s only been here a few weeks and has already added tremendous value by helping on multiple pitches for broadcast work and interactive/experiential, some covering both, proving to us that this is the right direction for companies like ours.”

“Versatility and adaptability are the cornerstones of the modern production landscape, and MPC understands that like no one else,” noted Estis. “This is a highly creative environment that enables us to bring the most out of someone else’s idea, or to work with agencies and clients to develop a new concept from the ground up.”

MPC has generated considerable interest in this area, recently completing an array of buzz worthy interdisciplinary work, including an interactive project displayed in Times Square for Nike Fuel, an installation introducing McLaren Cars’ new super-car, and a multi-site installation for a prominent energy brand.

“To be honest with you, there aren’t many companies doing what we do right now. You have your broadcast VFX and design companies on one end of the business and the digital/interactive on the other,” continued Estis. “While this might make sense in terms of technological capabilities, the visuals tend to suffer, as the talent isn’t always there. With MPC, we have the talent in house, whether it’s CG particle specialists or design oriented CG artists, sometimes sitting right next to each other. I’m excited to get to work such a versatile team.”

Estis, who has also worked at The Mill, Razorfish and Exopolis, has led the creation of digital, immersive, interactive and video experiences for Tanqueray, State Farm, Skype, the AFL-CIO, M•A•C Cosmetics, MBUSA, Ford, Balenciaga, Ralph Lauren, TED, HULU, GM, Microsoft, Apple and Nicktoons. He acted as creative director for Razorfish’s multi-award winning site and has developed numerous award-winning entertainment campaigns for Universal Pictures, Fox International and Focus Features.

ArcLight Cinemas Bring A Taste Of Hollywood To La Jolla, California With Christie Solaria Series Digital Cinema Projectors

Preferred Christie Partner ACS Enterprises Selects Christie As Exclusive Digital Cinema Provider At New La Jolla Theater In San Diego
.
Expanding its premium movie viewing experience to San Diego for the first time, ArcLight Cinemas once again trusted Christie digital projectors to exclusively light up the exhibitor’s new 14-screen multiplex in La Jolla, providing audiences with its signature Hollywood viewing experience that treats every guest like a star. The new 1,800-seat ArcLight La Jolla multiplex houses an array of Christie DLP digital cinema projectors, including five Christie CP4230 4K-resolution units, with one unit powering ArcLight’s first “Wide Screen” concept auditorium. ArcLight also plans to upgrade the projectors to High Frame Rate (HFR) 3D technology in time to present Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit,” since the Solaria Series is upgradeable to HFR.
.
“All our screens offer the best in sight, sound, and viewing comfort, with a wide variety of dynamic programming, ranging from the newest Hollywood blockbusters to independent art house fare, cult favorites and classics,” said Joe Miraglia, director of design, construction and facilities at ArcLight. “With such diverse content, ArcLight looked to Christie for a range of versatile and superior performance projectors from the Solaria Series, including the Christie CP2210 2K, Christie CP4220 and Christie CP4230 4K projectors, all of which provide the best in both conventional and premier movie experiences.”
.
ArcLight Cinemas recently opened its doors to the La Jolla community and held a special event on Friday, Nov. 16, to officially welcome its new audience.
.
According to Miraglia, the choice was also made easier thanks to ArcLight’s long history with Christie, which has resulted in the installation of 61 projectors in the company’s four Los Angeles-based theaters. With a mission to create the most memorable movie-going experience for film lovers and casual moviegoers alike, ArcLight Cinemas has been changing the way people experience going to the movies for ten years. Its sit-down café, extra-wide seats with double armrests, and full service concession areas make it more than a place to see a movie – it is also a destination for entertainment and a great night out.
.
Jose Alvarado, chief executive officer of ACS Enterprises Inc., which installed the Christie projectors in the La Jolla Theater at the Westfield UTC shopping mall, remarked that ArcLight auditoriums are unique in their designs. They are not constructed with maximum seating in mind; instead, they are built around the screen, focusing on a “black box” design aesthetic, which emphasizes undistracted viewing and features the best in sight and sound technology. Familiar with Christie’s winning combination of product and support excellence from its previous installations at ArcLight theaters, ACS powered all of the new screens exclusively with Christie projection systems.
.
“Christie continues to provide the highest quality picture presentation possible, offering best-in-class technology, as well as excellent technical support and expertise,” said Alvarado. “At ACS, we strive to efficiently meet our clients’ unique requirements, as does Christie. This shared philosophy is the basis of our highly successful partnership. ArcLight needed technology that would benefit greatly from the advances sweeping the industry for 3D and HFR film, and I trusted Christie completely to provide the most reliable products available today.”
.
“With the flexibility and adaptability of the fully DCI-compliant Solaria Series projectors, Christie presented the best solutions to meet ArcLight’s distinct audiences,” said Craig Sholder, Christie’s vice president of Entertainment Solutions. “Christie offers exhibitors the most cost-effective path to the next generation of digital cinema technologies, including HFR 3D movies. We continue to provide an unparalleled range of products and technical support, and are pleased to again be selected as the exclusive digital cinema provider by preferred partner ACS Enterprises, and to get the ‘V.I.P’ treatment from ArcLight Cinemas.”

Trollbäck + Company’s Next Generation Steps Forward: August Trollbäck Wows TEDYouth With 3D-Animated Opening

TEDYouth Animated Opening

August Trollbäck, an 8th grader at NEST+m, a K-12 school for gifted and talented students in New York City, and son of Trollbäck + Company (T+Co) Executive Creative Director Jakob Trollbäck, recently wowed TEDYouth attendees with his :30 animated opening. The day-long conference took place on November 17th at the Times Center in New York City, and was streamed live by TEDxYouth Day participants around the country and the world.

Trollbäck, 13, created what he calls, “a visual metaphor for the conference’s ‘carnival of ideas’ theme,” working with Adobe After Effects, Element 3D and Cinema 4D. The 3D animation takes us on a voyage through a “solar system” constructed from the building blocks of life — an atom, molecule, DNA, and cell — before journeying through man’s tools of scientific inquiry, such as a deconstructed timepiece and satellite, and ultimately resolving on the TEDYouth logo.

August Trollbäck

“We were blown away by August’s visualization of our conference concept,” notes Kelly Stoetzel, Content Director at TED and TEDYouth co-host. “He is an incredibly talented young filmmaker.”

TEDYouth attendees also had the opportunity to participate in T+Co’s stop-motion lab and create their own short films using the studio’s recently released stop-motion and timelapse iPhone app called Step. To view a montage of the work: http://vimeo.com/54053400

TEDYouth coincided with 100 independent TEDxYouth Day events worldwide. More than 20 scientists, designers, technologists, explorers, artists, performers and others shared short lessons on what they do best, dazzling the student audience with mind-shifting stories and creative inspiration, and sparking curiosity to dive deeper into a broad array of topics.

Composer Michael Montes of Sacred Noise in New York provided original music and sound design.
