Foundation Content In-House Directing Team The Focus Creeps Nominated as “Best New Directors” for 2012 by the UK’s Music Video Awards

Chicago, IL & Culver City, CA, Nov. 2, 2012 – Foundation Content, an Indie Advertising and Production Collective specializing in cross-platform marketing for a diverse array of clients, has announced that its in-house Directing Team, the Focus Creeps (Ben Chappell and Aaron Brown), has been nominated as “Best New Directors” for 2012 by the UK’s Music Video Awards. Winner will be announced in the UK on Nov. 8th. Samantha Hart, CEO, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Foundation Content, made the announcement.

Said Hart, “The Focus Creeps have truly found a niche in the music video world. Without question, they are playing a real role in helping to define an era through their natural insight into emerging trends in music and fashion.”

During this past year, the Focus Creeps directed a number of high profile music videos, both in the UK and in the U.S., working in tandem with Foundation Content producers Stacy Paris and Evan Cohen. Said the Focus Creeps, “We did a lot of UK music videos this past year. England seems to have a little more appreciation for current music than here in the U.S., so there’s more support for emerging bands over there.”

The 2012 Focus Creeps music video projects included:

** The entire campaign for Arctic Monkey’s “Suck It and See” album last year. The band performed during the opening ceremonies of this year’s Olympics. To view this video, please see: http://vimeo.com/29162161

** Shooting a music video for the band Garbage, which Focus Creeps’s Aaron Brown co-directed with photographer Matt Irwin. The theme was based on old surrealist films and photos. See: http://vimeo.com/41037276

** Filming a short poem with John Cale (originally from the Velvet Underground) at his studio, with music he wrote with Danger Mouse. See: http://www.focuscreeps.com/welcome-to-the-nookie-wood/

** Working with a newer band, Django Django. For Django Django, the Focus Creeps experimented with old tube cameras from the 1984 Olympics, trying to get the cameras to malfunction, and creating some strange color trails in the process. The Focus Creeps later realized that the 1984 Olympics logo also had color trails, wondering if that, too, was based on the original video footage.

** For the band Spector, the Focus Creeps filmed a stereotypical British band on a stereotypical U.S. Tour, until at the end of the video it’s revealed that they’re actually transporting contraband for the Mexican cartel. The viewer eventually sees that crew members for the music video interrupt the shoot, revealing the fact that nothing illegal is happening—the action is actually on a music video set.

** A music video promoting The Beach Boys. “We think the Beach Boys are the most influential band in the U.S., like the Beatles were originally in the UK. They have stuck together over the decades and therefore they have influenced every decade of rock and roll. We wanted to demonstrate that point (which we realized while trying to shoot, was kind of abstract) within our visuals. The point being that every decade that influences style and fashion today, the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc., are personified in the video. This was our way of paying homage to this legendary band.” See: http://www.focuscreeps.com/thats-why-god-made-the-radio/

Said Foundation Content Senior Producer Stacy Paris, “We’ve watched the Focus Creeps grow over the past three years, from shooting music videos for their friends’ bands, to working with such major musical acts as k.d Lang and The Beach Boys. It’s been such an incredible pleasure to watch their transformation, especially this past year. They are no longer just a couple of guys with cameras in their hands. They’ve become an amazingly talented team of directors – a team that I’m proud to work with on a daily basis.”

Foundation’s VP of Production, Evan Cohen, adds, “It’s great to see Aaron and Ben getting recognized for their work as the Focus Creeps. Both legendary as well as emerging bands trust them implicitly with their images. It’s a testament to their creativity that the music video industry has begun picking up on their talent.”

Sonnet’s Award-Winning xMac(TM) mini Server Expansion System Now Offers USB 3.0 Support

1U Rack Enclosure for Mac(R) mini and Thunderbolt(TM) Expansion System for PCIe(R) Cards Upgraded to Support Newest Mac mini Computers

IRVINE, Calif. — Oct. 31, 2012 — Sonnet today announced that its xMac(TM) mini Server, a combination PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) 2.0 expansion system and 1U rackmount enclosure for Mac(R) mini computers with Thunderbolt(TM) ports, is now USB 3.0-compatible. This innovative Sonnet product connects to the Mac mini’s Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI(R), and USB interfaces and extends them to panel-mounted connectors on the front and back of the unit. With the introduction of USB 3.0 ports on the newest Mac mini computers and the required use of USB 3.0 cables to support the interface at full speed, Sonnet’s USB 3.0 upgrade is timely and available with all currently shipping units.

Sonnet will offer existing xMac mini Server customers an upgrade path with a replacement cable kit. The easy-to-install kit (Part No. XMCBL-3USB3) replaces the existing USB 2.0 cables, and requires only a screwdriver and nut driver to complete the task. The kit, priced at USD $39.95, is expected to ship in mid-November.

The xMac mini Server transforms a Mac mini into a full-fledged expandable rackmount server, mounting the computer inside a specially designed 1U rackmount enclosure that contains two PCIe 2.0 slots that connect to the computer through its Thunderbolt port. The expansion system features a 100W power supply and employs temperature-controlled variable-speed fans to cool the cards and computer. This system enables users to plug in two PCIe adapter cards — one half-length/low-profile and one full-length/full-height — to slots connected to the Mac mini via an included Thunderbolt cable, while enabling the daisy-chain connection of additional Thunderbolt peripherals to the xMac mini Server’s second Thunderbolt port. The Mac mini’s Gigabit Ethernet, USB, and HDMI interfaces are extended to panel-mounted connectors on the back of the unit. With these features, the Mac mini is able to use expansion cards normally compatible only with the Mac Pro(R), making the Mac mini suitable as a short and light stand-in for the now-discontinued Xserve(R). This makes it ideal for use in cases such as a back-office RAID server, a metadata controller or mobile rack frequently used in mobile pro audio, or on-location shoots for cinema and other media projects.

The xMac mini Server requires the use of Thunderbolt-compatible PCIe expansion cards. Compatible cards fall into numerous categories including pro audio, Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SAS/SATA RAID controllers, video capture, and editing, with the list continually expanding as more cards are tested and certified.

The USB 3.0-compatible xMac Mini Server (part number XMAC-MS) is available now for $1,295. More information on the product and compatible PCIe expansion cards is available at www.sonnettech.com/product/xmacminiserver.html.

More information on Sonnet and its other products is available at www.sonnettech.com.

Adstream Takes International Standards Conversion in House with Teranex 2D Processor

Blackmagic Design today announced that AdPro, a department of global media technology group Adstream, has deployed the Teranex 2D Processor to support delivery of finished commercials to broadcasters around the world. The processor will be used in conjunction with a workflow that also includes a Blackmagic Design Micro Videohub and a SmartView Duo rack mounted monitors.

Recently formed, AdPro offers services that Adstream had previously outsourced to third party suppliers. Encoding more than 500 commercials a day in the UK alone, the addition of Blackmagic’s Teranex 2D processor means Adstream is now capable of handling its own Broadcast SD and HD standards and format conversion in house.

Operating an entirely file based architecture, Adstream will also use the Teranex processor for time base correction and the removal of illegal digital values via the the processor’s SDI baseband.

In partnership with UK based systems integrator NMR, AdPro has also created a studio workflow built around the Blackmagic Design Micro VideoHub. The 16×16 SD-HDI hub is a powerful broadcast grade routing switcher that lets AdPro eliminate complicated manual video patching and easily change connections from anywhere in the AdPro facility. Capture and playback is handled by two Apple iMacs running thunderbolt video I/O devices, with the Blackmagic Design Smartview Duo used to display the output.

This set up is replicated across AdPro offices in France and Brazil as well, allowing all three offices to communicate with one another. Through Teranex’s ethernet availability, AdPro can remotely patch machines while the Teranex web interface allows Adstream’s regional offices from around the world to create dubs over the company VPN.

“We need to have the highest standard and quick turnarounds that broadcast and outdoor are reliant on. With Blackmagic this is not only an option but a reality, making our decision to deploy Blackmagic’s Teranex 2D a simple one,” said Craig Russill-Roy of Adstream. “Not only can we now convert all of our international media, but we also have the ability to control this from anywhere in the world. Married with a Videohub, we have the ability to switch units from the UK or USA, allowing all 30 of our global offices to work in real time.”

“Our first job on the Teranex 2D was a global reach campaign for car manufacturer Nissan promoting a new electric car, the Nissan Leaf. Produced in Melbourne Australia as 1080i25 and 625, we had to convert to all NTSC. The Teranex video processor proved extremely responsive. When switching sources it would lock and allow immediate encoding. The built in UltraScope is also brilliant because it means we have our metering in once place.”

About Teranex
Announced at NAB 2012, Blackmagic Design’s Teranex 2D and Teranex 3D Processors are a new family of high end broadcast standards converter processors featuring high performance Thunderbolt I/O technology capture and playback features, starting from only US$1,995. These new models add improvements to Teranex’s world renowned standards converters, such as dramatically reduced size, whisper quiet operation, new connection with technologies such as HDMI, Analog, upgraded 3 Gb/s SDI, independent AES/EBU and balanced analog audio connections, as well as adding new Thunderbolt technology.
Teranex products include high quality de-interlacing, up conversion, down conversion, SD and HD cross/standards conversion, automatic cadence detection and removal even with edited content, noise reduction, adjustable scaling and aspect ratio conversion. All with full timecode and multi channel audio conversion. Also, the Teranex 3D Processor includes 3D dual channel conversion, patent pending 3D simulation and 3D camera rig alignment!

The Teranex 2D Processor is now available from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide, with the Teranex 3D available in Q4’12.

Sacramento’s KVIE Becomes First PBS Affiliate to Adopt Digital Nirvana’s Monitor IQ™ System for Monitoring and Logging

KVIE Selects Monitor IQ Essentials with Nielsen NAVE Watermark Decoding for Multi-Channel ATSC Broadcast Monitoring and Quality Control

Newark, CA – KVIE, the PBS affiliate serving the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto market, has chosen the Digital Nirvana Monitor IQ Broadcast Monitoring System (BMS) to perform quality control monitoring of its ATSC signals.

KVIE is the first PBS affiliate to adopt Digital Nirvana’s Monitor IQ for broadcast monitoring. The station placed its order for Monitor IQ Essentials in early June 2012. The system will be used to monitor the ATSC “off-air” signals of KVIE’s three DTV channels: KVIE 6.1 HDTV, KVIE2 6.2, and KVIE 6.3 VME – a Spanish language service.

Monitor IQ is a monitoring, logging, compliance, and content republishing system for TV networks and stations. It combines the functionality of content recording (HD and SD in full resolution), content searching, retrieve and repurposing, Web publishing, signal monitoring, air-check logging, archiving, ad verification and tracking, and competitive analysis in a scalable networked appliance.

Monitor IQ is available in four packages—Starter, Essentials, Plus and Premier—making it affordable and suitable for virtually every broadcast customer. Monitor IQ Essentials, the package KVIE ordered, includes basic Starter features, such as core logging functionality, plus FCC compliance monitoring and loudness monitoring.

“Our goal is to ensure that we are broadcasting high-quality signals that comply with the intent and spirit of The CALM Act and other federal and FCC mandates,” said Greg Johnson, director of engineering for KVIE. Johnson added that the loudness mandate does not directly apply to KVIE because it’s a public television station.

“The Monitor IQ system will also help us monitor closed captioning, signal interruptions, PSIP, and the overall technical integrity of our ATSC signals,” Johnson added. “With the ability to store 90-days worth of off-air HD/SD recordings, we can go back and check the signals we aired to verify compliance or take corrective action when issues are detected.”

KVIE also ordered an optional feature for decoding and logging the Nielsen NAVE Watermark ID to verify its presence within their DTV signals. Watermark NAVE decoding is a standard feature in the Monitor IQ Plus version.

Monitor IQ Essentials includes all the functionality necessary for broadcasters to ensure regulatory compliance. Newly introduced features include support for IP as an input source, and loudness monitoring is now bundled in as a standard feature within the package. The Monitor IQ Essentials system accepts DVB-T/C/S2, ASI, ASI/IP, HD/SD-SDI, ATSC/QAM and NTSC/QAM, and NTSC/PAL formats. It records audio, video, VANC metadata and captioning in both high- and low-definition. As with the Starter package, searching is based upon keywords, titles, subtitles, descriptions, textual metadata, closed-caption text and imported logs, with filtering by time, date and channel. Recordings can also be edited, clipped, stored and sent via email or FTP.

“We’re extremely pleased that KVIE has expressed confidence in our Monitor IQ broadcast monitoring system for its off-air multi-channel ATSC signal monitoring,” said Ned Chini, vice president of sales and marketing for Digital Nirvana. “We look forward to building a strong, mutually rewarding relationship with KVIE and supporting their goals of ensuring the delivery of high-quality broadcast signals to the communities they serve.”

Based in Sacramento, KVIE reaches 1.4 million households in its 28-county coverage area via broadcast as well as cable and satellite service providers. In addition to carrying PBS network programming, KVIE also produces several of its own original series including “Viewfinder,” which focuses on issues of interest to Northern California; Studio Sacramento, a public affairs program; and “America’s Heartland, about agriculture in America.

Vaddio Automated Classrooms Alleviate Instructor Shortage at Mekelle University, Tigray, Ethiopia

Mekelle University, found in the town of Mekelle – in the Tigray region of Northern Ethiopia – at present hosts over 23,000 students in regular, evening, summer and distance education courses for both Bachelors and Masters Degree programs. The Government of Ethiopia established the college through the merger of two former colleges in May 2000: Mekelle Business College and Mekelle University College. Both colleges have a history of instability; exhausting ascends and descends, as well as numerous relocations from place to place.  At present, the University boasts 1400+ academic staff, 1700+ administrative staff, eight colleges, four campuses, six institutes, one referral hospital and a Human Rights and Legal Service Center. Since its establishment, it has proved to be one of the fastest growing universities in Ethiopia – and they are using Vaddio’s classroom automation technology to do it.

“The main objective was to provide a solution to the instructor shortage within the university,” explained Mr. Ashenafi Gebre of Mekelle University. The number of students was growing, but the number of qualified instructors was not. “Because the ratio of students to instructors was so lopsided, they needed to find a solution where one teacher could teach more than one class at a time.”

Not only did they want to teach several classes at the same time, they wanted to teach them in front of a live classroom full of students and stream it to other areas on/off campus. “The existing videoconferencing system had poor quality and couldn’t achieve the proposed goal because we needed more than just cameras – we needed automated tracking cameras and video whiteboards,” says Gebre.

To overcome this, the university installed Polycom HDX 8000 codecs and ceiling mics in each of the classrooms. “To achieve the best results we decided to deploy several content sources and cameras per room, so we added Vaddio’s AutoPresenter camera/content controller and switcher,” explained Gebre. “With Vaddio’s AutoPresenter we had the option of having more than just the one Polycom EagleEye camera. Now we could add the AutoTrak camera tracking system and a Video Whiteboard to further automate the classroom.”

Using Vaddio’s PresenterPOD preset trigger device, each content/camera input to the AutoPresenter can be switched through the touch of a button. “The PresenterPOD makes it easy for the professors to just touch a button and switch from the Video Whiteboard to the desired camera,” says Gebre.

“Vaddio products are really easy to install and to use – it’s plug-and-play, not plug-and-pray,” explained Gebre.
One skilled professor can now teach students at Mekelle University and post-graduate and medical students at other Ethiopian universities simultaneously. The higher educational institutions in Ethiopia already have plans to automate even more classrooms throughout the Ethiopian university system because of the experience at Mekelle University.

Combining high performance I/O capabilities of Thunderbolt with the flexibility of PCIe, ThunderNET provides creative media professionals a cost effective solution to integrate Thunderbolt equipped platforms into high performance storage and data networks.

ThunderNET supports 1 or 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air computers, providing new levels of network performance and connecting seamlessly to Small Tree’s Ethernet shared storage appliance, GraniteSTOR TITANIUM, or 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches. ThunderNET can also provide additional Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to your current network.

“With their lower cost, compact form factor and increased portability, today’s lineup of Mac computers offer many advantages over traditional desktop systems,” said Corky Seeber, president of Small Tree. “However, these same systems do not provide enough connectivity flexibility for professionals in the creative fields. ThunderNET capitalizes on the new Thunderbolt technology to create an affordable and extremely robust solution for the post-production industry.”

Adding network bandwidth to any computer with a Thunderbolt port, ThunderNET offers several options, allowing customers to select the right amount of bandwidth necessary to meet their workflow demands.
