Clay Paky Sharpy Fixtures Earn Country Creds

Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures showed they are country strong with appearances in the lighting rigs for superstar Kenny Chesney’s Brothers of the Sun Tour with with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw and the fan-favorite CMA Music Festival with concerts at Nashville’s LP Field.

Lighting designer Mike Swinford used 16 Sharpys in the Brothers of the Sun rig; he integrated 55 in the rig for the CMA Music Festival, which was videotaped over four nights to create a music special to air later this summer on ABC.

“I first saw the Sharpys online when they were being introduced to the U.S.,” recalls Swinford. “We had some of the first batches; I used them on TV, and then they went on tour. I really like how small and fast they are. Of course, their main attribute is the tight beam that cuts through any other light in the design. I think of them as the new ACL.”

For the Brothers of the Sun Tour with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, which plays stadiums coast to coast, Swinford is using four groups of four Sharpys mounted on top of giant Marshall amp replicas. “They stay on the cabinets for shipping, so they don’t get handled every day,” he notes. “That makes for a very fast set up.”

Swinford deployed a complement of 55 Sharpy fixtures on the CMA Music Festival spread out on low circular trusses “so almost every camera would get them in frame,” he explains.

Mark Butts, who served as lighting director for the CMA Music Festival and as programmer for the Brothers of the Sun Tour with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, concurs with Swinford on the power of the compact Sharpys. “They hold their own against 350 1200-watt lights in the stadiums on tour with Kenny and Tim,” he says. “And they’re very unique for TV. Their color temperature is so high that I had to run them on a low percentage for the CMA Music Festival because they blow everything out.”

Swinford ran the lights for about a month in rehearsals prior to the tour. “The Sharpys are one of the most reliable lights we have,” he says. “We seldom have issues with them.”

A.C.T Lighting is the distributor for Clay Paky in North America.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “I love that the same designers are using our Sharpys for touring as well as television. It’s a clear demonstration of their impact and versatility.”

Orad to Debut New Version of Maestro Graphics Suite at IBC2012

New release of enterprise graphics solution shown on stand 7.B27

August 24, 2012Orad, the leader in broadcast graphic solutions, is pleased to announce that the latest release of its Maestro enterprise graphics solution (version 6.7) will be shown at the IBC 2012 Exhibition held in Amsterdam from September 7 – 11 (Stand 7.B27). Maestro addresses end-to-end graphics creation and distribution workflows for real-time, pre- and post-broadcast production environments. The enterprise solution seamlessly integrates with industry-standard newsroom, automation, traffic and editing systems, including equipment from Quantel, the latest addition to the long list of supported technology partners.

Headlining the Maestro release is the new GMAM system. GMAM is a graphics-oriented media asset management technology fully integrated with Maestro. GMAM provides broadcasters with administration and production tools to better facilitate graphics production and distribution in large-scale production operations where multiple users and workgroups spread across different departments require access to graphic production tools. All assets required for the graphic operation are handled by this one system. GMAM administration lets broadcasters manage global access rights while built-in production tools control ingest scheduling, proxy generation, automatic asset moving and copying, system monitoring and administration from a single point. With assets centralized in the new GMAM system, users across the facility have organized access to templates, images, video clips, and rundowns, creating a much more efficient graphics production workflow.

Also featured in the new Maestro 6.7 release is an order management system that better manages asset requests for video clips and images. When the request for a graphic/image item is made, the new order management system automatically slots a placeholder against a graphic item. The system notifies the designer a graphic is needed. Once the designer has created the image, he/she adds it to the placeholder. The order management system automatically links to the original graphic without additional extra intervention.

Another new significant Maestro feature is the SceneEdit module. SceneEdit lets users create a completely new graphic design or modify the look of existing graphics from the playout station. Simple to use, SceneEdit lets designers of all skill levels create stunning 3D designs.

The new Maestro features and functions, combined with the possibility to integrate with other Orad products, make Maestro the perfect solution for any broadcaster looking to enhance efficiency in its production workflows.

IBC Preview: Social media interaction, rendering innovations, flexible video management and new mapping capabilities among highlights for Vizrt

At IBC 2012, Vizrt Ltd will exhibit in Hall 7, Booth A10 September 7-11th at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre in Amsterdam. Vizrt will introduce several new innovations and demonstrate a cohesive approach to social media interaction.

Empower your audience

Integrations with Twitter, Facebook and Youtube will be shown with Viz Virtual Studio in Vizrt’s public show at the booth, with Viz Ticker3D for the design of creative tickers, with Vizrt’s character generator Viz Trio, and with Viz Multichannel for channel branding. Also new at IBC will be a Vizrt Skype interface which provides tools for the newsroom and production staff to interface with Skype calls directly from newsroom systems, Viz Trio and Viz Content Pilot.

The Vizrt public show will include second screen integrations that demonstrate how the audience at home can interact with a broadcast on their mobile device.

Further interaction with the audience through social media will be on full display on several multi-touch screens throughout the booth. Interactively control and display feeds coming from twitter or see historical trending topics and how they relate to geographic locations.

Flexibility and IP streaming

Vizrt’s real-time 3D compositing engine, Viz Engine is receiving a major update to its capabilities in the form of IP streaming. The Viz Engine now has the capabilities to take streaming content in and out, adding flexibility to the engine’s configuration in the station environment since only a network connection is needed. The Viz Engine renders real-time content and outputs the IP stream so the video can then be easily distributed to the web and mobile devices.

Viz Engine is being updated further with DVS SpycerBox integration. SpycerBox makes it possible for up to 8 Viz Engines to play out full broadcast quality HD video clips from a single shared storage.

Control the action

A new plugin for the Viz Engine gives users the ability to trigger clips in a EVS instant replay system. The plugin allows designers to create interactive scenes and send commands to the EVS system. This allows operators during a live sport event control of the EVS and all graphics from a single interface.

A gateway to all your content

The Viz Media Engine, Vizrt’s file-based video solution, can be a full media asset management (MAM) or act as a gateway to existing MAM solutions. As a gateway, the editorial staff can search for all their assets through the Viz Media Engine interface in their Newsroom Control system. The Viz Media Engine recognizes all the content stored in existing MAM systems and retrieves that content through search results. This allows the editorial staff to have access to all video content and graphics in a single interface to distribute on-air, online and mobile devices.

Vizrt’s file-based video workflow solution is fully scalable allowing for multiple Viz Media Engine server installations. Search content and replicate media from multiple geographic locations, giving the editorial staffs in the hub and satellite offices of large station groups access to all their content.

Branding video content is an important part of station identification, especially as that video content is now being distributed to many locations – on-air, online and mobile devices. During the transcoding process for multiplatform delivery, the Viz Media Engine performs automatic graphic insertion. Logos, ads and other graphics are adjusted based upon preset designs for the final screen resolution ensuring your brand remains intact and the graphics are always of the highest quality.

Cost-effective broadcast live video recorder for SDI acquisition

Viz Video Engine, Vizrt’s broadcast live video recorder for SDI acquisition, has been completely redesigned for the HD broadcast world. The recorder is controlled and managed by the Viz Media Engine. A single chassis handles four channels of ingest and playout, each capable of recording files from an extensive selection of HD and SD broadcast video formats. All video is wrapped in the MXF format, stored locally and made accessible through an FTP interface. Files are automatically moved and transcoded to centrally managed storage by Viz Media Engine. This means assets can be searched, previewed and edited from Viz Media Engine – even while recording is still ongoing. Once recording completes, Viz Media Engine automatically deletes unwanted media.

Access to the world

Vizrt has partnered with DigitalGlobe to provide a low-cost streaming imagery service to Viz World. This service, DigitalGlobe Online, gives customers full access to DigitalGlobe’s vast imagery database. When combined with Viz World, producers can create real-time 3D maps with high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery for anywhere in the world. With the FirstLook option, the latest satellite imagery from hotspots around the world are available for purchase within hours of the imagery being taken.

Viz World is being further enhanced with the introduction of OpenStreetMap data. Don’t be limited to street level maps in just your city. With the OpenStreetMap data the map designer has access to a global database of street level data that can be easily installed and searched by address or point of interest. OpenStreetMap is a vector based data solution allowing the maps from Viz World to be easily scaled for distribution to all platforms.

IBC 2012 will also showcase innovations in sports analysis and 3D sports coverage as well as the full Vizrt suite of broadcast graphics tools. Creativity, efficiency and innovation across all platforms will drive Vizrt at IBC. Contact us today to set an appointment.

AES/EBU Announce Collaboration on Next-Generation Audio Over IP

Common Goal – Interoperability

NEW YORK: AES Standards Committee Chair Bruce Olson reports an important step forward in the development of Audio over IP in broadcasting: The Audio Engineering Society and the EBU have announced a collaboration with the goal of producing a new common packet-based network standard for linear PCM audio. This liaison is officially entitled “Next generation AES/EBU Interface Based On IP Technology.”

These two organizations have a history of fruitful collaboration. First published in 1985, the AES3 standard, also known as the AES/EBU interface, is a fundamental standard for the transport of digital audio signals between professional devices. The new liaison is a continuation of this work, which will benefit the whole professional audio industry.

The primary AES/EBU focus is on audio interoperability over high-performance IP networks, with the further goal of interoperability with the EBU’s common framework for audio contribution over IP, ACIP. The initiative is partially inspired by the ACIP project group’s interoperability recommendations for audio over wide-area IP networks. Through the ACIP2 group, chaired by the IRT’s Sonja Langhans, the EBU represents the technical interests of a key user group for the new standard, the public broadcasters of Europe.

Within the AES, the work has already started, with the project known as AES-X192. The group is chaired by Kevin Gross. A recently published draft is now being discussed among project participants, including some ACIP2 members.

New project participants are welcome. EBU Members or manufacturers working in the broadcast domain can start by joining the ACIP2 project group. Others can directly contact AES task group SC-02-12-H, which is open to any directly and materially affected individuals.. For further information visit www.X192.org. To participate, please follow the links at www.x192.org/join/; membership in SC-02-12-H is open to any directly and materially affected individuals.

It should also be noted that the 133rd AES Convention, scheduled for Oct. 26 – 29 at SF’s Moscone Center will introduced a dedicated, Networked Audio Track Chaired by noted engineer and long-time AES member, Tim Shuttleworth, the six Workshops and Tultorials developed for this event will feature participants including Sonja Langhans and Kevin Gross. They will address many of the Workflow issues and related concerns currently acting as ‘stumbling blocks’ in the path of interoperability.
