Hongdian Film Production Installs DaVinci Resolve

Fremont, CA – August 22, 2012 – Blackmagic Design announced that Hongdian Film Production Co., Ltd. installed a Linux based DaVinci Resolve color correction system with 8 GPUs for real time 4K/3D color grading. The installation is part of Hongdian’s goal to build China’s first end to end 4K/3D production line.

Hongdian Film Production is located in Hengdian World Studios, also known as Chinawood, which is the largest outdoor studio in the world and consists of 13 shooting bases. The studio includes full scale replicas of the Forbidden City and the imperial palace of Qin dynasty, which were used as backdrops for many television shows and feature films, including “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, “Hero”, “The Forbidden Kingdom” and “Mummy 3”.

Before Hongdian Film Production began offering post production services at this location, film crews that came to Hengdian World Studios for backdrops had to send their footage to post facilities in other cities. These same crews would often have to travel outside of China to find facilities that could provide 4K and 3D post production services.

To meet customers’ demands for high quality advanced 4K/3D services, Hongdian Film Productions built China’s first end to end 4K/3D workflow around Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve, which includes support for the widest range of popular formats. DaVinci Resolve will be used to convert RAW files to high quality ProRes for Apple Final Cut Pro editors, MXF for Avid Media Composer 6 editors, and DPX or TIFF sequences for VFX designers. DaVinci Resolve’s powerful multiple GPU rendering provides real time format conversion, enabling colorists to quickly build timelines for real time 2D or 4K/3D color correction and finishing.

“Our efforts to build China’s first 4K/3D workflow have filled an empty space in Chinese filmmaking techniques, and will bring Hengdian World Studios a healthy media ecosystem, from production and post production to marketing and distribution. Now we are able to provide end to end local services to film crews that come to Hengdian World Studios, allowing them to arrive with even only a screenplay and leave with a finished film ready to deliver,” said Shi Xiongguang, General Manager of Hongdian Film Production. “We chose the most advanced technology the world had to offer to handle even the most demanding post production work: Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve.”

Shi continued, “We think DaVinci Resolve offers the best performance and value, with a user friendly interface that colorists can quickly master. Its powerful real time color grading for 4K/3D allows our colorists to meet clients’ requests, quickly and precisely.”

133rd AES Convention Tech Tours – Fantasy To Electronic Arts

TRI, 25th Street, Ex’Pression, + Fenix, The Bay Area’s Hottest New Club

SAN FRANCISCO: “A Bay Area native with a solid background in all things audio, 133rd AES Convention Tech Tours Chair Jessica Livingston has proven herself an invaluable resource in ferreting out our town’s most interesting and ‘happening’ highlights,” says Convention Co-chair Valerie Tyler. “The depth of Jessica’s connectivity, coupled with her instinctive grasp of what would most appeal to our Tech Tour aficionados has shaped a particularly well rounded schedule this year,” Tyler adds.

“My goal was to profile the diverse range of SF’s pro audio community,” Livingston says. “From a cutting edge video game creative campus, to a top-flight school and SF’s latest live performance venue, these tours are designed to be instructive, colorful and entertaining.”

133rd AES Convention Technical Tours include:

Tamalpais Research Institute (TRI) Created by Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir, TRI is a $5+ million, state-of-the-art recording and broadcast facility located in San Rafael. The 11,500-square-foot complex features a 2,000-square-foot main studio, a smaller studio, two mixing rooms and five additional isolation rooms. The entire facility is interconnected, for audio and HD video recording. In addition to its broadcast and recording capabilities, the complex is a showcase for the Meyers Sound Constellation System, a revolutionary new concept in public audio.

Electronic Arts: The world’s largest video game publisher, features a host of high tech development and production studios. In addition to sophisticated design and production technology, the 22-acre campus-like environment is equipped with a number of employee-friendly amenities including sports fields, and basketball courts. The tour will visit each of EA’s four buildings and include a presentation in their state-of-the-art auditorium, a ‘Visceral Studio’ demonstration illustrating the audio focus of game development. And, a web audio API sound engine demo.

25th Street Recording: Distinguished by a 1,400 square-foot tracking room, and 17-foot-high ceilings, this new Fran Manzella-designed complex represents a rare example of a large-scale studio launch in our current ‘project studio’ era. Outfitted with a massive collection of analog outboard gear and a 64-channel API Vision console, 25th Street also boasts a number of cool (and green) aesthetic accoutrements, including floors fashioned from wood reclaimed from stadium benches.

Polarity Post Production: This 5-studio, full service, audio post house represents the penultimate environment for creative sound design and mixing. Clients range from Disney Channel, to many national ad campaigns. Outpost Studios: Creators of Sound Design, Music, Dolby Mixing, Voice-Over/ADR and Foley for feature films, TV and Gaming. Recent Outpost projects include the new Robert Redford feature “The Company You Keep,” and Kiefer Southerland’s “Touch” for FOX. Thanks to dual occupancy in the same Embarcadero District building, participants may attend both tours concurrently.

Ex’Pression College For Digital Arts: One of SF’s largest and most comprehensive cutting edge educational campuses, Ex’Pression features an Interactive Audio Program focused on preparing students for careers in video games, mobile phone technology, hand-held multimedia devices and many more contemporary creative options. The ultra modern school features multiple studios, control rooms, editing suites, gaming stations, a theater, MDG Labs and a Stop Motion Room. Among the guides for this tour will be legendary multi-Grammy-winning producer/engineer Jack Douglas, who is now a guest lecturer on Sound Arts for Ex’Pression.

Fantasy Recording Studios: is celebrating its 40th year as one of the world’s premiere studios. With credits ranging from Creedence Clearwater to U2 and Estelle, Fantasy continues to attract crème de la crème artists and producers. The three-studio complex boasts a total Studio D upgrade, completed early this year.

The Fenix Club: The latest addition to San Rafael’s cool but low key night life scene, this new, 200 seat, 8600 sq. ft. showcase performing venue/restaurant features outstanding acoustics. Just 25 minutes from the Moscone Center, The Fenix is distinguished by a whimsically elegant design, and accented by a striking backlit wall. This tour will be conducted by architect/acoustician, John Storyk, whose Walters-Storyk Design Group designed the club.

Dolby Atmos Demo: Considered the most significant new development in audio since surround sound, Dolby Atmos delivers a more natural and realistic soundfield. It transports the audience into the story with a ‘lifelike sensory experience.’ Developed with input from highly respected feature film professionals, this new concept in sound represents a dynamic reinvention of traditional surround sound methodology. This demo will be held at the Dolby Headquarters Theater in SF.

*PLEASE NOTE: Tickets for Technical Tours are only available on site at the Moscone Center. A Preliminary Calendar of Event dates and times will be posted on the www.aes.org website soon. Tickets will be sold at the Reception Desk in the main lobby well in advance of departure.

La-Z-Boy Continues ‘Live Life Comfortably’ Campaign, Starring Brooke Shields

Santa Monica, Calif., Aug. 22, 2012 – La-Z-Boy is joining forces once again with actress Brooke Shields to continue its national “Live Life Comfortably” campaign. The strategy of the campaign is to showcase La-Z-Boy’s wide range of furniture beyond its legendary recliner. Since the campaign featuring Shields was launched in November 2010, La-Z-Boy has experienced seven quarters of year over year same store sales growth in their La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries system. The campaign has been identified as one of the key factors in these results.

To commemorate La-Z-Boy’s 85th anniversary, the campaign includes a TV commercial promoting a national sales event. “We’re excited about this promotional spot and feel it’s the perfect time to invite customers to come see our collection of customizable home furnishings, including sofas, sectionals, ottomans and more,” said Doug Collier, Chief Marketing Officer and President International at La-Z-Boy. “The anniversary commercial celebrates our 85-year history by having a little fun with Brooke and poking some fun at ourselves, while showing our beautiful and unexpected home furnishings.”

La-Z-Boy’s agency of record, RPA, teamed with @radical.media Director Dave Meyers to create four TV commercials, a pair of online videos, four national print ads and other digital content.

The first TV commercial, which started airing in early August, “Big Deal/Anniversary Sale,” opens on Shields in the midst of an elegantly decorated living room, calmly discussing La-Z-Boy’s 85th anniversary sale. “Eighty-five years, that’s a really big deal,” she says. “They don’t need some loud ad that screams ‘sale!’- just me telling you about the great deals on gorgeous furniture.” Just then, horns trumpet, balloons drop from the ceiling and a nine-foot tall flashing sign lit up with “85th Anniversary Sale” slides across the set. “Guys, I thought we weren’t doing this?” Shields asks with a confused yet playful and cheeky tone.

“For a household name, Brooke maintains a down-to-earth, relatable persona that’s genuinely approachable,” said RPA CD Jules Fox. “The situational humor used in the campaign plays on Brooke’s lighthearted personality and appeals to the sensibilities of our target audience.”

“Shut Up” introduces an incredulous neighbor who yells “Shut up!” and punches Shields every time she learns that a new piece of furniture came from La-Z-Boy, inspiring the spooked spokeswoman to begin replying to her inquiries via text message from a safe location. Late 2012, the TV campaign continues with “Elephant,” which demonstrates the advantages of previewing purchases with La-Z-Boy’s online customization tool and stars a life-sized computer-generated elephant, and later “Neighbor” will air featuring a binocular-wielding snoop who cannot fathom the beautiful living room is all made by La-Z-Boy.

The TV commercials will run on more than 30 cable networks in the U.S. and Canada, including HGTV, Food Network, Lifetime, Oxygen and USA. Two online videos, a Q&A with Shields where the actress talks openly about working with La-Z-Boy and a flipbook, which rapidly cascades through La-Z-Boy-designed rooms, will live on http://www.la-z-boy.com/. Print will appear in a variety of publications such as “Better Homes & Gardens,” “Country Living” and “Martha Stewart Living” and online units will run as pre-roll or banners.

Autoscript Showcases Broadcast Prompting Solutions at SET 2012

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, AUGUST 22, 2012—Autoscript, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and a world-leading teleprompting company, is showcasing the company’s latest prompting solutions at the SET Congress and 21st edition of the Broadcast & Cable Show – International Technology Fair. The company is present at two locations at the show; attendees can visit either the Vitec Brasil Booth (B11A) and/or the PHASE Booth to see a variety of the company’s teleprompters, accessories and software.

Autoscript is exhibiting its full line of LED teleprompters at the show, including the LED17TFT-BLW and W19HDSDI-OA prompters. The LED17TFT-BLW is a 17-inch LED color on-camera prompter with a wide-angle molded hood and 17-inch LED teleprompter monitor. The W19HDSDI-OA is a 19-inch HD/SD SDI widescreen color LCD professional monitor with on-air kit. Both systems incorporate the latest in Autoscript’s illumination technology, the TFT (thin-film transistor) LED system. Unlike CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tubes), which take many minutes to reach full efficiency and light output, the company’s LED prompters offer instant warm-up to full brightness. In addition, the wide-angle hood of the prompters makes them optimal for news- or studio-based productions.

For broadcasters in search of portable and/or handheld solutions, Autoscript is featuring its LED8TFT and ELP15 teleprompters. The LED8TFT is an eight-inch high-bright LED color TFT on-camera prompter with a small folding hood. Weighing only 7.7 pounds, it is suitable for studio (jib), field and high-bright applications. The ELP15-POV is a 15-inch TFT color LCD on-camera prompter ideal for small POV cameras.

Autoscript is also highlighting all three versions of its WinPlus prompting software. Compatible with all leading newsroom systems, including ENPS and iNEWS, WinPlus-News, Studio and Xlite offer users all-in-one solutions for show rundowns, cues and prompting. User-friendly and intuitive, WinPlus software enables users to control the run order and edit anywhere within the script, even when scrolling through the on-air story. This leaves the prompt output unaffected, adding resilience to the overall system.

The company is also exhibiting its range of tally and timecode accessories. The ClockPlus is an LED SMPTE/EBU timecode display that changes color from green to red when a suitable tally input is applied. In addition, the company will showcase its TallyPlus, a unique camera number system that features a large LED indicator. It displays the camera in green (1-9) while in standby and then turns red when the camera is live. TallyPlus retrofits to the entire range of Autoscript TFTs. It has the unique feature of a second photo-electric cell built into the rear of the device, which docks with the cue light on the TFT.

For more information and to find an authorized Autoscript dealer, please visit www.Autoscript.tv or contact ussales@autoscript.tv.
