Cobalt Digital to Bring Multi-Channel Loudness Processing & Monitoring Over IP to The European Market at IBC 2012

Visit Cobalt at IBC Stand 10.B27

AWARD-WINNING TECHNOLOGY OFFERS MAXIMUM COMPLIANCE WITH MINIMUM MAINTENANCE

Urbana, IL, Cobalt Digital (www.CobaltDigital.com), manufacturer of award-winning 3G/HD/SD-SDI conversion gear for broadcast environments, will introduce the European market to technologies at IBC that provide an easy path to EBU R128 and CALM compliance. Notable among a complement of ground-breaking products is the multi-award-winning LMNTS™, an exciting breakthrough in comprehensive transport-based loudness processing, and SpotCheck™, an innovative transport stream compliance monitor. Cobalt will also demonstrate the new Blue Box Group™ series of throw down conversion modules, a new range of MADI cards including Embedder/De-embedder (with 192 x 192 crosspoint switch) and MADI DA, and both physical (OGCP-9000 and OGCP-9000/CC optimised for colour correction) and virtual remote control panels.

LMNTS (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams)
Using LINEAR ACOUSTIC® Aeromax™ technology, Cobalt’s LMNTS™ (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams) represents a quantum leap in multi-stream loudness processing by offering an economic, consistent solution that’s easy to integrate.

Winner of both TV Technology’s STAR and Broadcast Engineering’s Pick Hit awards at NAB 2012, LMNTS performs automatic loudness processing across many transport streams making it ideal for MVPDs and MSOs where a large number of diverse programming sources must be simultaneously controlled. It operates at the MPEG IP transport layer to provide a practical loudness management solution without the need or complexity of external codecs transferring between baseband and MPEG external interfaces.

Available in both IP and ASI versions, LMNTS extracts and decodes audio codec packets from the program stream, performs high-quality PCM loudness processing, and then re-encodes and re-packets the audio within its stream. Physically, all data connections to LMNTS are via GigE IP or ASI interfaces using an industry-standard IT hardware platform with no intermediary breakouts.

SpotCheck – Audio Loudness Measurement and Recorded Data Logging System
Cobalt’s SpotCheck™ takes the guesswork out of loudness measurement and logging, and facilitates CALM and EBU R128 compliance. SpotCheck monitors an IP, ASI, or a transmitted over-the-air MPEG stream at the transmit (emission) encode point, and provides easy-to-use, convenient, long-term access to loudness records for all programming initiated from a broadcasting facility.

Segments can be searched via the intuitive display of loudness plots along with date/time-stamped thumbnails of the actual corresponding programming, or can optionally be queried and correlated using a database relationship with the facility as-run automation list. SpotCheck readily pinpoints all segments that are outside of CALM/R128 compliance, providing documentary proof should an erroneous complaint appear. Ethernet control enables integration with facility IT providing long-term logging/thumbnail storage.

Requiring no breakout from the MPEG stream and not affecting the emission stream in any way, SpotCheck provides an easily integrated, facility-based, powerful solution for loudness records and compliance interrogation and verification.

Blue Box Group – Interface Converter boxes
Cobalt is returning to its roots by presenting a modular, low-cost, signal conversion line offering excellent performance, ease-of-operation, and practical installation. The series – named Blue Box Group™ – receives its power directly form video monitors or other equipment via USB without bulky “wall wart” adapters.

MADI cards – Ideal for Outside Broadcast environment
Ideal for the OB market, Cobalt’s new series of MADI embedder/de-embedder processing cards opens up new possibilities in multi-channel/multi-source baseband audio routing (192 x 192 crosspoint switch). The 9374-EMDE Quad Stream SDI – AES – MADI series, perfect for mobile environments, provides a full unrestricted audio crosspoint that allows channel routing between any channels on up to four SDI steams, discrete AES-3id, and AES10 MADI interfaces. It uses standard 1694A cabling thus eliminating the need for fiber. Its excellent MADI receiver performance allows up to 250m MADI receive capability with no signal degradation.

Embed and de-embed-only versions are also available, as well as dual SDI stream 9372 and single SDI stream 9371 versions.

Physical and Virtual Remote Control Panels
Cobalt has developed unique remote control panels for control, configuration and monitoring of the 9000 COMPASS® and Fusion3G® cards. The OGCP-9000 can be used with multiple 8321 and HPF-9000 frames and cards. Operating with the Dashboard GUI the OGCP-9000 offers the intuitive control for quick, efficient operation. The OGCP-9000/CC is optimised for fast, real time adjustment for on-air colour correction.

The WINOGCP virtual control panel via PC offers convenient controls that mirror the abilities of the hard OGCP-9000 panel using computer mouse via Ethernet.

Both the OGCP-9000 and WINOGCP are ideal for monitoring and logging of loudness control to meet EBU R128 and ATSC A85 requirements.

Digital Process Workflow Lab To Simulate Leading Real-World Post Production Strategies for Both Film and Television

Partners Bring Clarity, Cohesion to First-of-its-kind Pavilion at Createasphere’s Fall Entertainment Technology Expo

(BURBANK, CA) Three months before its scheduled launch, Createasphere and its partners have announced further developments in the content of the first-ever Digital Process Workflow (DPW) Lab at the fall edition of the Entertainment Technology Expo (ETE) being held at the Burbank Marriott, November 7-8. The DPW Lab is a curated, walk-through demonstration of the digital workflow ecosystem and the processes that define how content is created, distributed and archived today and in the near future. As both the feature film and broadcast industries continue to adopt new digital technologies, many production professionals are looking for guidance. The DPW Lab will demonstrate customizable strategies that are scalable and affordable, based on real-world solutions that Lab partners are integrating and creating every day in post.

DPW Lab partners – including Dell, ARRI, Technicolor, Adobe, 5th Kind, FilmLight, Signiant, Levels Beyond, Quantum, Codex and other leading solution providers – are working together to develop a demonstration of file-based content creation from capture to archive and distribution. Each company will contribute its authoritative expertise to an integrated pavilion that showcases today’s best-in-class digital workflow. The ultimate goal of the Lab is for attendees to leave with a “big-picture” understanding of how decisions at every stage of production and post production impact the quality of content generation, and how that content can be accessed and monetized for the future.

Interactive, educational sections of the DPW Lab will break down each step of the digital processes for feature film and television content creation. A simulated workflow will explore where post begins, how decision-making impacts each stage of the process, and how content is created with real-world solutions in mind. Areas of focus will include:

* Capture – from camera, on-set dailies management, data capture, and file movement
* Post – integration of editing, visual effects, finishing and color grading to deliverables

Canon XA10 Compact Professional HD Camcorder Helps KRGV-TV5 Win Regional Emmy for Feature News Report

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 14, 2012 – Smaller-market TV stations face a constant challenge to produce compelling, cost-effective local news that builds audiences amid multichannel competition. For KRGV TV-5, in Weslaco, Texas, meeting that challenge combines award-winning journalism with affordable, ultra compact XA10 professional HD camcorders from Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions. Equipped with infrared features for shooting in total darkness, the station’s hand-held Canon XA10 HD camcorders were instrumental in producing “The Battle in Brooks County,” a special report on the plight of illegal immigrants that won a 2011 Lone Star Emmy Award. Reporter Jordan Williams and photographer Mike Ortiz accompanied sheriff’s deputies on night patrols of vast ranchlands and used the XA10 HD camcorders to document the perils of illegal immigrants abandoned by human traffickers in the deserts of southern Texas.

“During the past decade, our area has seen hundreds of illegal immigrants cross the border, get lost in the brush, and die,” Williams explained. “We were out on patrol one day and found two men who were dehydrated and in very bad health. Mike had his shoulder-mounted ENG camera and I had the Canon XA10, and we did an instant two-camera shoot right there on the side of the road. The men told us their story and were suffering so badly they had to be taken to the hospital. It’s a sequence that will always stick in my mind.”

“We captured memorable footage at night as well, including interviews with volunteers who patrol the ranchlands in the dark looking for lost illegal immigrants,” Ortiz added. “The XA10 is small, versatile, non-intimidating, and it gives us great video. That’s what I need in my line of work.”

Capable of shooting in conditions with little to no ambient light, the Canon XA10 professional HD camcorder features infrared video capture and an infrared emitter with a diffuser, as well as a green or white color option to shoot HD infrared imagery even in complete darkness.

Professional Creative Control
Weighing just 1.7 lbs., the Canon XA10 professional HD camcorder captures 1080p Full HD video using an AVCHD codec recording to a 64GB internal flash drive or two SDXC-compatible card slots. Equipped with a built-in Genuine Canon 10x HD zoom lens (with a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 30.4mm – 304mm), Canon 1/3-inch native 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor, and Canon DIGIC DV III image processor, the XA10 provides users with complete manual control for creative, professional use. Those manual controls include variable frame rates (60i, PF30, PF24, and native 24p), shutter speed, aperture control, gain control, white balance (adjustable from 2000K to 15,000K in 100K increments), and zoom speed. The focus ring on the lens can be set for MANUAL, and users can set the direction of rotation as well as three levels of response control. In addition to the focus ring, auto-focus speed can be adjusted for smooth transitions, as well as to a FACE-ONLY AF mode allowing for a blurred image as a person walks off-screen. The XA10’s lens also features Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) system with STANDARD, DYNAMIC, and POWERED IS modes for steady video in most any shooting situation.

Packing a Big Punch
“As the station’s former chief photographer I know cameras,” noted KRGV operations manager Israel Alfaro. “I do the budget for the news department, and look for equipment that can help the news team. The Canon XA10 caught my attention because of its infrared features. We do a lot of undercover news here in South Texas, where nights are dark out in the brush of ranch country. The XA10 also caught my attention for its HD image quality, professional features, mobility, and file-based workflow convenience. It’s just like connecting an external hard drive to your computer editor. I showed it to our news director and she wanted one immediately. The XA10 is small but it packs a big punch in quality and looks nice and sharp on the air in HD. It’s also very cost-effective. We just purchased a second one.”

Additional features of the Canon XA10 HD camcorder include a 3.5-inch high-resolution (922,000-dot) touch-panel fold-out LCD screen that can be flipped for solo shooting with the LCD facing the subject. The XA10 also includes a 0.24-inch, 260,000-dot color EVF for use in bright daylight or other conditions that could prevent use of the LCD. For checking critical focus, a Touch and Track feature provides instant focus and exposure correction on any point of interest touched on the LCD. Auto focus and exposure can be adjusted independently or turned off for full manual operation. Also, two peaking modes and a 2X magnify focus-assist function are available in STANDBY and RECORD mode on both the LCD and EVF. The XA10 also features Canon’s Edge Monitor Focus Assist system, which displays a green monitor at the bottom of the LCD. A green waveform provides dynamic focus feedback to intuitively tune focus or quickly change the zone of focus. A custom key and dial allow for convenient, one-touch access to various functions such as focus or exposure and are set through the camcorder’s menu system.

The Canon XA10 HD camcorder features a built-in stereo microphone and a detachable handle for low-angle shooting. The handle includes dual XLR inputs, audio switches, audio level dials, and a removable microphone holder. The XA10 supports Dolby Digital 2ch (AC-3 2-channel) with automatic and manual audio-level adjustments.

“Some of the best sounds bites in ‘The Battle in Brooks County’ were the interviews we did with the camera mic right there in the middle of darkness,” Williams noted. “It worked just fine.”

Raising the Bar
“I have taken the XA10 to various locations and use it both on regular day-of stories and special projects, and it has been a real asset,” Ortiz explained. “I still love my shoulder-mount camera, but the compact design of the XA10 enables me to get more angles, which is really important for a photographer. I think that hand-held and shoulder-mounted cameras can work very well together, and if you’ve got them both then you’re going to bring back some really great footage. I am able to utilize both during multi-camera shoots. I can aim the XA10 at my talent or my subject and can match the audio up, and it works wonderfully. I had the XA10 up in a helicopter and gave it to the reporter to get shots of the pilot while I shot aerial footage with my shoulder-mount. The XA10 works great in various scenarios and it’s small, versatile, and gives you great B-roll, great video and great colors. The XA10 is a handy extra camera that lets you make your video more compelling and your story that much better.”

“The XA10 gives us the capability not just to have great night shots but also more shots during the day from different angles that you wouldn’t normally get,” Williams stated. “We keep both of our XA10 HD camcorders charged and we grab them whenever we are shooting a story that might lend itself to multiple angles. From a reporter’s perspective, that raises the bar of any story.”

Bob Ludwig Platinum Panel To Address ‘Mastered For iTunes’

Mastering Pros To Clarify Misunderstood Initiative

SAN FRANCISCO: The Mastered For iTunes initiative, one of the most significant, yet misunderstood innovations developed for the ubiquitous music distribution format will be the subject of an essential Special Event planned for the 133rd AES Convention. Scheduled for October 26 – 29 in SF’s Moscone Center, the Convention will provide 20,000+ music industry pro’s with timely and definitive information on a plethora of creative and technical issues. Convention Special Events Chair, Christopher Smith. reports, “One of our most important presentations is this year’s Platinum Mastering event. Long-time moderator Bob Ludwig has developed a panel discussion to assess and clarify the relevance and value of this vital new Apple iTunes process. Attendance at this Special Event should be required by every pro engineer who hopes to keep current with critical innovations.”

MASTERING APPLE INC.’s “MASTERED FOR iTUNES” INITIATIVE – THE SCIENCE, THE PROCEDURES AND THE RESULTS: Moderator, Gateway Mastering President, Bob Ludwig (Springsteen, Stones, Radiohead, Mumford & Sons), will helm a vital discussion with leading mastering engineers including Eric Boulanger (Colby Caillat, Chris Botti, The Bravery). Other panelists tba – Apple’s iTunes Store is the world’s largest music vendor. Last year, with the introduction of Colbie Caillat’s All of You download, they began selling higher fidelity AAC encodes at no additional cost to consumers. Some mastering and recording engineers have misunderstood this process. Additionally, a surprising amount of misguided press about what it does and does not do has been generated. Considering Apple’s market share, every mastering engineer should understand this vital new procedure. The Apple “Mastered for iTunes” initiative is based on 100% solid science and it can yield AAC encodes so close to the 44kHz/24 bit PCM encode masters that many have failed an A-B-X listening test. A Q&A will follow this timely discussion.

Vaddio, the global leader in robotic PTZ cameras and camera control systems, today released a major software update to its USB Camera line. The free Version 1.1 software update allows ClearVIEW HD-USB PTZ camera users the ability to control the camera from any computer or mobile device that supports a web browser.

“When we launched our EasyUSB camera systems we knew that our customers would demand a more sophisticated control approach than a traditional IR Remote Control,” explains Vaddio CEO, Rob Sheeley. “By connecting to the camera’s Ethernet port, users can now browse to the embedded web server built into the camera and have complete control of the camera by using the preconfigured web page user control panel.”

Internal web pages within the camera allow control of the HD-USB camera via Internet connection through a standard web browser. Users can now adjust pan, tilt, zoom and home controls, as well as pan, tilt and zoom speed controls; switch video sources, and store and recall six camera presets. Administrators have the additional ability to control security passwords, change the IP address, view diagnostics, access firmware upgrades and Help settings. The IP address will be displayed onscreen out of the composite, analog component (YPbPr) and the USB video output.
