Public Broadcaster Makes HD Studio Upgrade with Hitachi Cameras

Budget, Ease of Use, Picture Quality and SD/HD Interoperability Cited as Reasons for Selection by PATV-15

WOODBURY, NEW YORK– Cox Communications recently installed three Hitachi Z-HD5000 studio and field HDTV cameras in the Manchester, Connecticut studio of its public access channel PATV-15.

Residents in Cox Communications’ three franchise areas —Manchester, Cheshire, and Enfield, CT— can produce a show or a series for air on PATV-15 after taking a television production-training course. Because of this, user-friendliness was a key concern in camera selection. After they receive basic video training from PATV-15 production technicians—including Greg Thresher and Laurie Batignani—the new producers are able to truck the pedestal-based HD cameras around the studio and pan, tilt, and zoom.

Two other factors in the selection process were cost and SD/HD interoperability. “For us, buying three broadcast-quality HDTV cameras at once was a major capital expense—one that consumed much of our annual equipment budget,” said Chris Giard, Video Engineer, PATV-15. “We consider such large purchases carefully because we hope to keep the equipment in service for at least 10 years or more. We chose Hitachi for several reasons, including the outstanding service we’ve received over the years from our Hitachi Representatives Sean Moran and Kenneth Cyr, and the incomparable price-performance Hitachi delivers.”

Budget constraints prompted PATV-15 to tackle the HD studio upgrade in three phases, including Phase 1 for cameras. When Cox is ready, it will proceed with Phase 2 plans to buy a Broadcast Pix Mica or Granite HD production switcher among other production gear, and eventually Phase 3 for full HDTV distribution.

Because Hitachi Z-HD5000’s are native multi-standard cameras—with integrated format conversion—PATV-15 operators can shoot in HD today and output down-converted 4:3 480i SD-SDI video until the broadcaster has completed its entire HD workflow. In the future, Cox intends to buy additional Hitachi Z-HD5000’s to convert its Cheshire and Enfield studios to HDTV.

The three new Hitachi Z-HD5000’s cameras in Manchester are each outfitted with optical fiber camera adapters, 7-inch HDTV LCD color viewfinders, Hitachi CU-HD500 camera control units, and Hitachi’s RU-1000-VR remote control panels—critical for remote camera set-ups, such as color balancing and iris control.

While new HD lenses are on the station’s wish list, Giard reports that the Hitachi Z-HD5000 cameras produce superior image quality and meet their technical specs even with SD lenses. “This excellent picture quality motivates and inspires people to use our facilities and raises the bar on the credibility, impact, and value of the shows we air,” he added.

Iron Claw Creates Dramatic Opener For “Madden NFL 13″ Featuring Baltimore Ravens’ Ray Lewis

Full-service production company Iron Claw brings the chills in a powerful opening sequence for EA Sports’ blockbuster video game “Madden NFL 13″ featuring Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis. In the two-minute piece, Lewis sits in a dark locker room sharing his battle-tested insights into what it takes to be the best, and to build a legacy in the NFL.

To view the opening sequence: https://vimeo.com/47492062

“The crew at Iron Claw was instrumental in this project,” says Jean Adams, EA Sports “Madden NFL 13″ Creative Director. “They captured the emotion of the NFL and created a piece that describes our product better than words could convey. The community loves this piece and describes it as the best intro in sports games. They get chills every time they see it and for the first time, refuse to skip it before going in game.”

“As a video game brand, Madden represents the best NFL interactive experience,” adds Jeremy Wabiszczewicz, Iron Claw Art Director, who directed the live-action opening sequence. “It has a mass dedicated following. Our challenge to engage the player in an unexpected way from the moment the game boots up for the first time. This sequence was all about legacy. Ray Lewis has a tremendous ability to motivate people, and gives off this indefinable savage energy. I wanted to exploit that visually. From there, the concept wrote itself.”

The boot flow or opener for “Madden NFL 13″ differs from the more traditional motion graphics piece for “Madden NFL 12,” which Iron Claw also created. This time around, the client gave Iron Claw a canvas to create a true narrative. Wabiszczewicz says the user has a more personal role in the game, developing teams and players, and connecting to friends and others through the hub of the game experience.

“EA wanted to focus on Lewis and his career along with some key additions to the Madden game itself,” explains Wabiszczewicz. “They were implementing the Infinity Engine, which inserts physics into the game for more organic movements of the football players. This more or less changes the core feel of the game, and the in-depth depth career mode is like a role-playing game for Madden players. It was up to us to create a piece that encompassed these elements, and build a story out of it.”

Iron Claw produced the shoot in Los Angeles, using the increasingly popular RED Epic camera. The team jumped immediately into post, augmenting the live-action shots with CG using Maya and composited with After Effects.

“Ray Lewis played a big part, beyond just being the feature of the piece,” concludes Wabiszczewicz. “He’s clearly a creatively-minded guy and understanding of the process of a visual effects-heavy piece. It was great to collaborate with Jean Adams, [Executive Producer] Anthony Stevenson and [Post Production Director] Steve Brooks. The kernel and vision started with these guys, and we just took the ball and ran with it. EA has been a fantastic client through the years and offers a lot of creative latitude. The gaming industry has really created a new landscape for the visual narrative.”

Levallois-Perret, France – August 31, 2012Dalet Digital Media Systems, a leading provider of Media Asset Management solutions for News, Sports, Program Preparation and Archiving, has announced that yes, the sole provider of satellite television services to Israel, has implemented Dalet Media Life for program preparation and production at its television play-out center in Kfar Saba. Dalet Enterprise Edition, the powerful Dalet MAM platform for Dalet Media Life, integrates with several other systems at yes to create a streamlined workflow by managing media and metadata through multiple aspects of program preparation including ingest, compliance editing and content enrichment. With more than a 580,000 subscribers, yes garners 40% of the country’s multi-channel TV market share with more than 168 video channels, radio and music channels, interactive game channels, information channels, pay-per-view video channels, 20 HD channels and Over the Top VOD service. In addition to providing news and general interest channels from major international broadcasters and networks, yes has signed acquisition agreements with the world’s leading film studios and producers thus assuring the widest choice of new movies at the highest quality. yes is well known for its 9 yes-branded, “larger than life” movie channels, multiple themed channels, and its documentary channel.

“Dalet Media Life with the Dalet Enterprise Edition MAM platform has given us a smoother workflow with much greater control along the production chain and as we prepare content for the 40 channels we program in-house. We’ve seen a big improvement in productivity,” says Oz Peleg, Head of Broadcast Centers for yes. “The system is extremely flexible and easily adapted to our preferred workflows. And the open architecture allows for integration with our other systems, giving us cross-system metadata management. We are strong promoters of applying advanced technologies to improve efficiencies and are very interested in the potential offered by Dalet Galaxy, the new MAM platform. We would definitely consider expanding the system down the road as we can envision how the new Business Process Management (BPM) workflow engine in Dalet Galaxy with real-time reporting metrics could give us greater visibility into all our processes and workflow steps. This kind of insight and precision makes it far easier to identify bottlenecks and continuously improve productivity.”

Dalet Media Life includes the Dalet Enterprise Edition MAM platform, a centralized content catalogue and workflow engine that orchestrates many tasks in the program prep workflow. Dalet Media Life also includes specially designed toolsets that facilitate the production chain covering ingest, dubbing and QC, rough-cut editing, subtitling and captioning as needed for broadcast, VOD or other platforms.

Accessible from a single user interface, these purpose-built tools enable a more collaborative workflow. At yes, multiple integrations provide a fluid workflow from start to finish. These include integrations with some of the leading providers of broadcast products including servers, storage, transcoders, business management systems, graphics, and NLEs.

“Broadcasters like yes realize that the value of the Dalet Media Life with the Dalet MAM platform goes well beyond managing the media and metadata. It extends to managing all the different steps of the workflow in unison in order to maximize resources, improve productivity and meet deadlines,” says Stephane Schlayen, COO, Dalet. “The MAM can drive multiple workflows simultaneously with many tasks fully automated. Assignments can be orchestrated so that operators follow precise steps and procedures using the most efficient tools to finalize their tasks. yes is leveraging the capability of the MAM platform to continually improve efficiency and realize tangible benefits.”

BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT WORKFLOW ENGINE TAILORED TO MEDIA WORKFLOWS BRINGS OPERATIONAL AND BUSINESS VISIBILITY

Additional new features include Dalet One Cut video editing platform, revamped graphical user interface, and expanded support for new standards

Levallois-Perret, France – August 31, 2012Dalet Digital Media Systems is showcasing Dalet Galaxy, the latest and most advanced version of the company’s enterprise Media Asset Management (MAM) platform at the IBC Exhibition in Amsterdam, September 7-11, 2012 (Stand 8.B77). Dalet Galaxy includes a BPMN 2.0-compliant workflow engine that has been specially tailored to media workflows in order to improve productivity while adding operational and business visibility across the enterprise. Additional new features in Dalet Galaxy include Dalet One Cut, a multitrack video editing framework; a modern graphical user interface; more customizable data models; advanced tools for searching and indexing; increased interoperability with NLEs; and support for upcoming industry standards such as AS-02 and FIMS. Dalet Galaxy will become the foundation for the company’s enterprise MAM solutions, which include the purpose-built workgroup packages: Dalet Media Life for program prep and archiving, Dalet News Suite for news production and distribution, Dalet Sports Factory for live event and sports production, and Dalet Radio Suite for multiplatform news and music programming.

The new, industry-standard BPM workflow engine in Dalet Galaxy meets the specific workflow needs of broadcasters and media companies and makes all of the operational and business processes fully visible. Managers can see the workflow in total as well as at the granular level. They can monitor the internal progress of each workflow step and pinpoint the status of assets in the workflow so priorities and tasks can be adjusted and reassigned to ensure that deadlines are met. The BPM workflow engine includes easy-to-use tools for designing and modeling workflows, and for orchestrating human tasks as well as automated processes (transcoding, file transfers, etc.). It’s also possible to create contextual “To Do” lists, which simplify the workflow for operators and ensure compliance to established procedures.

Contextual To Do Lists streamline the workflow and ensure compliance with established procedures. Tasks are prioritized and assigned to individual users or user groups. When operators accept a task, the tools needed to complete the task (video editor, metadata form, etc.) automatically open on the user’s desktop. There is no doubt about which tool to use, what asset to work on or how to proceed as user prompts drive the task to completion.

The New Graphical User Interface is completely updated to meet modern usability standards and will provide a consistent look across all applications. The GUI also features different “skins.” Either a light or dark background can be applied to particular functions or workgroups in order to make the desktop tools easier to see and navigate. For instance, the dark background might be applied for technical operators who perform tasks in low-light environments such as gallery control rooms, while the light background might be more beneficial for users focused on text, metadata entry, indexing and logging.

Dalet One Cut is a real-time, multitrack video and audio editing platform. One Cut is the ideal tool for multimedia journalists and content prep operators. The system can be configured to match the complexity of different tasks and the proficiency of the users. Clips can be stored in the Dalet Clip Bin where they can be shared, assembled and storyboarded.

Dalet Xtend for Avid NLEs and Adobe Premiere – This module provides for seamless exchanges of videos, shot lists, EDLs and their metadata between NLEs and the Dalet MAM and is now available for Avid Media Composer and Avid NewsCutter in addition to Apple Final Cut Pro. The module will shortly be available for Adobe Premiere editing systems.

Enterprise Search and Cataloguing – including glossary, thesaurus and genealogy for faster searching and content sharing.

Dalet WebSpace and Google Gadgets – Dalet Galaxy now makes content and tools even more accessible. With Web Space, authorized local and remote users can share content and access Dalet toolsets via a standard web browser. It is also possible to expose content and tools such as Dalet Preview, Media Logger and Storyboarder directly onto customer portals using Google gadget technology.

Christie’s Moving-Yoke Projection Technology Adds To The Excitement At 5LINX Sales Meeting

Christie® technology was the clear choice when Atlanta-based PPi was asked to provide the projection technology for the 5LINX company sales meeting at the Las Vegas Convention Center recently. 5LINX is a direct marketing company providing electrical, power, cellular and satellite services to customers throughout America with its head office located in Rochester, New York.
.
PPi produces corporate events and for the 5LINX meeting, they used the best ideas from award and reality shows – especially American Idol – and combined them. The 64-feet wide by 40-feet deep multi-tiered stage was bathed in colors from numerous spotlights, a Christie YK100 moving yoke system, and several Christie projectors – creating a feast for the eyes.
.
Geoffrey Platt, event production designer at PPi, used one Christie YK100 yoke with a Christie WX10K-M projector and was impressed with the result.
.
“One of the main elements of the show was an opening segment with lighting and pyrotechnics shown behind a center screen measuring 23-feet across by 11-feet high that tracked eight feet up-and-down, from which presenters would emerge,” he said. “The Christie YK100 and projector were tracking to this center screen, which is why we used the yoke solution. The quality of the WX10K-M projector we used in the yoke was great.”
.
Designed for staging and event productions, the award-winning Christie YK100 supports the Christie M Series 3-chip DLP® platform as well as the Christie LX1500 LCD model, giving AV professionals a range of brightness levels from 5,700 to 15,000 ANSI lumens and a choice of resolutions to fit any event requirements. The flexible Christie YK100 moving yoke includes an interchangeable head system so technicians can swap out one Christie projector for another— on the same yoke. The Christie YK100 can be rigged or set up at floor level with both projector and yoke control from the same console using DMX512 protocol.
.
“There are some similar moving projection products on the market but they don’t even come close to the quality of the Christie YK100,” he said. “For what we were doing, I couldn’t conceive of a better fit. This was the first time I had used the Christie YK100 and the yoke performed beautifully.”
.
Christie HD10K-M and Christie HD18K Projectors Complete the Presentation
.
Platt said that 5LINX used Christie HD10K-M 3-chip DLP® projectors for both a secondary screen and the ‘halos,’ which were tension fabric cut in rings eight feet across that hung 20 feet above the stage. Projected onto the halos were graphic treatments above customized 5LINX logos.
.
PPi also used four Christie HD18K 3-chip DLP® projectors – one each for four separate, main screens – to display graphics, PowerPoint, video and IMAG.
.
Planning and executing such an elaborate show is a major undertaking but Platt knew Christie technology would perform as advertised.
.
“I have never had any problems with Christie projectors and they have always been rock solid,” he concluded. “We had no issues at all. I love the color, contrast and picture quality and everything worked flawlessly out of the box. Christie also has the moving yoke/projector system, which is a big plus and made the decision that much easier. Christie had everything we needed to ensure this event went smoothly.”
