Sennheiser unveils first AVB microphone

Las Vegas, June 13, 2012 – Sennheiser [InfoComm 2012 booth C9736] has chosen the InfoComm show to unveil its first microphone that employs groundbreaking Audio Video Bridging (AVB) technology. The audio specialist is one of the first companies to use this technology in a product, proving that the AVB networking standard is no longer a distant dream.

As a technology leader, Sennheiser has always had a decisive influence on designing the audio world. With the development of the first AVB microphone, the family-owned company is showcasing the application of the new networking standard at this year’s InfoComm in Las Vegas. “We are convinced that AVB will play a major role in the future,” said Sennheiser product manager Kai Tossing. “That’s why we are especially pleased to be able to present the first Sennheiser microphone with AVB technology at this year’s show.”

New technology meets proven audio quality
Sennheiser’s AVB microphone was developed as part of a study. At the moment, it is still a prototype and will not be available in this form as a product in the market. Nevetheless, as the successful outcome of a product study, it proves that Sennheiser’s renowned audio quality can be transmitted into a digital Ethernet network without problems. The microphone also demonstrates that AVB technology already functions as a network technology for tomorrow.

Visitors can experience the Sennheiser AVB microphone in action on the stage in the AVnu Pavillon. More examples can be found at the Sennheiser booth.

Advancing the AV industry with AVB
Sennheiser is a member of the AVnu Alliance, an industry forum dedicated to the advancement of professional-quality audio video. Its key objective is to establish Audio Video Bridging (AVB) as a standard technology for A/V applications such as microphones, loudspeakers, laptops, beamers and many other devices.

Myers ProTrack TV to Anchor Centralcast Hub for PBS in Upstate New York

WILL PROVIDE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT TO MULTI-CHANNEL NETWORK OPERATIONS CENTER IN SYRACUSE

Northampton, MA – Myers Information Systems – a leading developer of broadcast traffic, business and content management software, and the supplier-of-choice to PBS member stations nationwide – today affirmed the company’s role in the groundbreaking consolidation of broadcast operations being built at the new WCNY-TV/FM broadcast and education facility in Syracuse, New York. Scheduled to launch in October, the facility will assume master control responsibility for the primary and secondary content channels for all nine New York State PBS call-letter stations, New Jersey Public Television (NJTV), plus a specialty programming service, for a total of 35 on-air streams.

Operating as Centralcast LLC, the PBS facility is expected to save some $25 million over 10 years in reduced equipment, operating and maintenance costs. It may generate additional revenue, once up and running, by offering services to other area broadcasters. The Myers team will install a version of ProTrack TV at the central operations facility, to centralize content acquisition and data management, facilitate content exchange among stations, capture content revisions, and track media locations across both central and local storage devices. The Myers software will be fully integrated with an end-to-end content management and play-to-air automation solution being supplied by Evertz Microsystems Ltd.

“ProTrack scheduling and business management software has long been a key to the success of our individual station operations,” said Robert Daino, president and CEO of WCNY-TV/FM, home to the new facility. “Myers not only has the systems integration experience necessary for a project of this scope, their in-depth knowledge of PBS and its unique workflows gives us full confidence in their ability to deliver us a highly efficient playout center for stations throughout the country.”

“We are extremely pleased to be a part of this exciting and innovative project,” said Crist Myers, company CEO and president. “This represents a whole new era for Public Broadcasting, one that combines cutting-edge technology with a rational approach to operational efficiency. This endeavor will go a long way to help participating PBS member stations become more self-sustaining and insure the availability of high-quality PBS programming to the area’s loyal viewing audience for years to come.”

Myers’ highly regarded flagship suite, ProTrack, is available in both radio and television editions. It offers comprehensive scheduling and business management for individual, multichannel and multi-station facilities. Actively used by more than 226 media outlets, supporting more than 1,300 channels, ProTrack provides a high-level of structure and scalability, without sacrificing flexibility, for today’s rapidly evolving media environments.

WSDG Begins 16th Art Institute Audio Teaching Studio

4-Year Building Program Creates Nation’s Largest Audio Education Network

NEW YORK: An intensive 4-year design/construction program by the Walters-Storyk Design Group has produced sixteen professional audio education studios for The Art Institutes’ educational institutions across the U.S. Developed to train students for jobs in the rapidly expanding sphere of high tech audio-related occupations, the studios provide cutting edge instruction in both theory and hands-on production techniques. The Art Institute of Michigan (Detroit) complex is currently under construction.

WSDG Partner/Senior Project Manager Romina Larregina has spearheaded the program since its inception. Working closely with company principal/architect/ acoustician John Storyk she has supervised each construction project to insure the highest level of pro audio educational professionalism. “John Storyk’s commitment to education was a primary catalyst behind The Art Institutes decision to retain WSDG for this major assignment,” Larregina says. “His extensive lecturing background, coupled with our 40-year + history of creating world-class studios for artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Alicia Keys and Bruce Springsteen, made us an obvious choice for this expansive, on-going project.”

“Each WSDG- IA studio was custom designed to meet specific aesthetic and logistic requirements,” Larregina reports. “Room and class size, technology selection, acoustics, a myriad of related issues dictated our design considerations. These are not ‘cookie cutter’ installations,” she emphasized. “They are designed to address every aspect of pro audio training, including digital and analogue technology.”

“Professional audio education has undergone a seismic shift over the past few years,” John Storyk remarked. “The traditional mega studio paradigm has evolved to a new generation of compact, powerful ‘vest-pocket’ and personal facilities which maximize the potential of affordable laptop-based recording and mixing technology. Concurrently, the new job category has flourished,” Storyk adds. “While traditional positions such as mixing, mastering and FOH engineering may have diminished; audio pros are now flourishing in such diverse occupations as perceptual audio coding, streaming, virtual acoustics, and forensic audio reconstruction. These new AI studios and their faculties are positioned to populate the mushrooming pro audio job market with highly trained and motivated candidates. WSDG is proud to have been associated with AI’s expansion.”

WSDG has created AI studios in Washington, DC, Nashville, Austin, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Philadelphia, Shaumburg (Illinois), San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Inland Empire (CA), Chicago, Austin, Minneapolis and now Detroit.

“We are expanding our professional audio production curriculum in recognition of the new job opportunities in a field far wider than traditional music recording and live sound mixing,” states John Mazzoni, president of The Arts Institutes. “Video game design and production; corporate, governmental, industrial, educational, broadcast and many other sectors rely on skilled professionals to produce high-quality audio content for a variety of creative, entertainment, and messaging purposes. Innovative applications ranging from audio forensics to ringtone production are expanding exponentially. Jobs exist now and entire new categories are emerging. We are committed to training our students to serve as valuable assets to these potential employers.”

In recent years, WSDG has created a number of large-scale audio education facilities. These include: NYU’s $6.5 million Steinhardt Center Music Technology Complex in NYC, teaching studios for the University of Colorado (Boulder) and the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor).

WSDG is currently engaged in the largest and most ambitious audio education project in their 40+-year history. Teaching studios for two massive Berklee College of Music campuses: An ultra-modern complex in Valencia, Spain is rapidly approaching completion. And, a 22,000 sq. ft. audio facility for Berklee’s new $100 million, 16 story multi-purpose building is currently under construction at 160 Massachusetts Avenue, at the heart of the college campus.

Compass Bible Church Installs ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher and Compact Videohub

Fremont, CA – June 13, 2012 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Orange County’s Compass Bible Church installed a large number of Blackmagic Design products as part of a major campus wide renovation. Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 2 M/E and 1 M/E Production Switchers, ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel, Intensity Extreme, Compact Videohub and more than 30 Blackmagic Design Mini Converters have been installed to form the AV backbone of a massive sanctuary redesign and three new on site ministry buildings.

Compass Bible Church’s massive construction and multimedia update included the redesigning of a main sanctuary with a capacity of 900, a 600 seat high school ministry, a 500 seat junior high school ministry and a children’s ministry with 16 classrooms. To produce weekly services and events and stream live online and across the campus, Compass built a new control room in the main sanctuary based around a wide range of Blackmagic Design products.

The new control room is now equipped with the Blackmagic Design Compact Videohub and ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher, and is connected to the three ministry areas, each of which serve as a sub production area with its own Blackmagic Design ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher. Each ministry feed also sends to individual Blackmagic Design Intensity Extreme Thunderbolt capture and playback devices for archiving and Internet live web streaming. Compass also has more than 30 total Blackmagic Design Mini Converters attached to TV’s and monitors throughout the four buildings and gathering areas, including the two large video walls featured in the main sanctuary.

“It was a huge undertaking to complete this installation while making sure the more than 3,500 people who attend our weekend services didn’t miss a beat,” Compass Bible Church’s Tech Director, Joe Way, said. “We chose a Blackmagic Design backbone because the ATEM Switchers offer all the power, inputs and outputs we could ever need, and myself and the only other technician on staff needed reliable and intuitive equipment our volunteers and students could use. We ordered the 1 M/E Switcher when it was first released, and once we saw quickly our volunteers took to it, we knew instantly that we had to construct our new infrastructure around a Blackmagic Design family of products.”

The ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher’s 16 simultaneous inputs, two multi view outputs and six aux. outputs handle the multiple sources and feeds for live streaming throughout and routing back and forth between the four areas of Compass’ network with ease. And the ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel, which has the power to handle the most complex live events, was installed and put to work the moment it was delivered.

Way recalls: “The ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel arrived literally 20 minutes before our Good Friday service started, and we could not wait to use it. We plugged it in, the service began and it was phenomenal. Being familiar with the ATEM Software Control Panel made the transition to the 2 M/E Broadcast Panel virtually seamless. We had a full volunteer crew putting out professional video product literally within minutes.”

HARMAN’s AKG Discreet Acoustics Modular PLUS Series Delivers Improved Modularity And Quality For Conferencing And Presentations

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – With a continued focus of providing the highest quality and most versatile microphones available, HARMAN’s AKG announces its latest addition to its installed systems – the Discreet Acoustics Modular PLUS Series. With a wide range of goosenecks and installation modules available, the Discreet Modular PLUS Series offers optimal adaptation for all types of room setups and speakers, with quick microphone capsule exchange.

The reliability stemming from the models’ LED Ring underscores the ability to reduce the risk of operating errors, sturdy material to reduce fatigue and improved protection from signal block outs. The LED Ring uses special circuitry to operate off standard phantom power, as two separate leads carry supply voltage and provide extra shielding to the audio signal.

The Modular PLUS Series’ interface module connects the high-quality gooseneck to the phantom power source, which adds flexibility to all mounting modules. The self-cleaning connector is reliable, inconspicuous and safe – allowing for simplified and cost-effective microphone replacement. The goosenecks themselves are tested under extreme circumstances, bent and twisted into extreme shapes, ensuring their quality and flexibility.

“AKG has specialized in developing, designing and manufacturing quality microphone capsules for more than 60 years and the Discreet Acoustics Modular PLUS Series is a testament to the continued strategy to offer the best in sound in any mic’d application,” stated Thomas Giczy, Business Development Manager Installed Sound and Conferencing, AKG. “The variety offered through the Modular PLUS Series, from the power offerings to the mounting and capsule modules, is the best in class and will provide optimum audio for videoconferencing or presentations around the world.”

The CK43 supercardioid condenser capsule offers users a 95-degree pickup angle, ideal for situations where unwanted noise pickup is a concern. The CK49 is a reference condenser capsule with an 80-degree pickup, with clean, off-axis response. It is ideal for use with inexperienced speakers, focusing on the voice when the speaker is distant, and reducing pop if close to the mic.

AKG’s Gooseneck GN155M is a 155cm module with a heavy, shock-mount floor stand that works perfectly as a stand-alone unit or on stages placed in front of a large group of instruments or speakers. HM1000M is a reference-hanging module used to fly mics from the ceiling to record or reinforce music or speech in houses of worship, theatres or conference halls.

AKG’s PAE M reference powering module offers the phantom power for fixed and mobile installation, providing a gold-plated, 3-pin XLR connector. Its wide voltage range fits most mic mixers. PAESP M is a programmable power module for fixed and mobile installation, fitted with a unique binary coded decimal switch to recall operating modes. PAESP M’s noiseless mic switch reduces its level by 26dB, avoiding the irritating crackling sound when phantom power is interrupted.
