The Story Of California’s State Parks Captured In Award-Winning Film California Forever

California Forever To Premiere On KQED In Fall 2012

(San Francisco, CA) Backcountry Pictures and KQED present California Forever, a two-part PBS television special that tells the story of California’s magnificent state parks from Yosemite in 1864 to the present day. Together, the two one-hour programs remind viewers of the importance of California’s state parks as well as their priceless legacy. California Forever is scheduled to air nationally in fall 2012 (check local listings) and in the Bay Area on KQED 9, the public media company that serves Northern California.

California Forever was written and directed by Academy Award-nominee David Vassar. The program was produced by Sally Kaplan and David Vassar. The idea for the film was sparked after David and Sally watched the battle between conservationists and developers over the proposed Orange County Toll Road which would have paved over a portion of San Onofre State Beach. David and Sally felt compelled to tell the story of California’s State Parks as a way to remind viewers of these parks and their value.

“The story of California State Parks is the story of California. It is also the story of the ‘park idea’ and how it spread from California across the country and around the world. The scenic beauty and historic sites that California State Parks protect celebrate our heritage, and helps define what it means to be a Californian,” said David Vassar. “In California Forever, we hope to encourage viewers to explore state parks in their neighborhoods and across California; to remind them of the priceless legacy that parks protect and to honor the individuals and groups who fought so hard to preserve them over the last 160 years.”

Episode One:
California Forever: The History of California State Parks highlights the discovery and creation of California’s state parks system and celebrates the individuals and groups whose passion and commitment helped preserve and protect them for future generations. It takes viewers on a scenic, cultural and historical tour of California’s state parks highlighting the people, key events and locales that made California history. The episode begins with the discovery of the giant sequoias in 1852 by Augustus T. Dowd and recounts the establishment of California’s first state park, Yosemite. Continuing, the narrative moves through the individual stories of citizen action that preserved many of California’s most celebrated landscapes as state parks. Included are the coast redwoods, Big Sur, Point Lobos, Hearst Castle, Lake Tahoe and the Anza-Borrego Desert. Historic places and people that commemorate crucial chapters of the California story are also explored. The plot intersects with many important victories that saved much of California’s most cherished landscape and in the process, inspired the creation of the National Park Service and the protection of wilderness.

Episode Two:
California Forever: Parks for the Future presents the very real challenges that state parks are currently facing in California. Among these are habitat destruction by overuse; protection of native species at the expense of recreation; reclaiming industrial brown fields to create new parks in dense urban areas; establishing historic sites that commemorate people and events from diverse cultures; and imminent park closures. This episode highlights the trials of balancing peaceful solitude at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park with the growing demand for “off-roading” at neighboring Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area. It then tells of the wildlife preservation efforts for the northern elephant seal and western snowy plover that sometimes limit public access along parts of the central coast. California Forever stresses the importance of reclaiming land for parks in urban settings including the “re-wilding” of the Los Angeles River. Additionally, it celebrates the diverse cultures and histories of many groups who made California home, including the Chinese who first arrived at the Angel Island Immigration Station and freed slaves who created a utopian agrarian community at what is now Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park.

An Official Selection at the International Wildlife Film Festival, California Forever received the award for Best Educational Program in 2011. It also was selected for screenings at the 2011 American Conservation Film Festival, the 2012 Wild & Scenic Film Festival and the 2012 Environmental Film Festival of Washington, D.C.

In addition to David and Sally, California Forever’s creative team includes Christopher Tufty, director of photography; Christian White, editor; Tony Humecke, composer; and Richard Doyle, narrator. The producers scouted more than 100 parks, and the Backcountry Pictures crew shot in 46 of them over a two-year period. The arresting visuals of California’s state parks were acquired at 4k resolution with a RED ONE digital camera.

Major funding for the PBS broadcast of California Forever is provided by Destination Cinema. With giant screen theaters in the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Hearst Castle, and Victoria, Canada, Destination Cinema provides people with an enhanced travel experience. Working with state and national parks, along with museums across the country and around the world, Destination Cinema creates opportunities for visitors to connect with extraordinary places. Additional support is provided by the Hoeffer Family Foundation, Independent Documentary Association and Active Network.

HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 M2 Records Malaysian King’s Royal Banquet

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – During a ceremony steeped in royal tradition, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’azam Shah, 84, was recently installed as the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The event took place at the new Istana Negara (royal palace) in Kuala Lumpur and was followed by a formal banquet at the Malaysia New National Palace in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur. This was attended by members of the Rulers, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Cabinet ministers, foreign ambassadors and senior government officials. Also present was a HARMAN Studer Vista 5 M2, supplied by Mahajak Trio, the territorial distributor, which recorded the occasion.

The program was sent to air nationwide on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), with a total of 32 microphone channels used throughout the night. The Vista 5 M2 console was selected for its innovative qualities, flexibility, ease of use, the precise meter bridge (displaying every status the sound engineer needed to see), user-friendliness of the Vistonics(tm) screen – and finally the fact that the console is aesthetically very attractive.

“The Vista 5 M2 enabled the sound engineers to implement fast copy-paste of all the parameters while the Vistonics interface provided immediate access to parameters by opening up settings onto the encoder, such as EQ, Dynamic, VCA and channel setting, without wasting time searching for any hidden buttons,” said Mahajak Trio’s Senior Manager Sales & Project, Lee Chin Kah.

Another key feature used to mix the event was ‘Master Contributions’, enabling the sound team to view and control all the contributions on Vistonics faders.

In addition to these powerful and unique features, Mr. Lee highlighted the instant recognition provided by the console’s use of color and icons for different control parameters. “The desk is extremely intuitive and easy to learn within a second,” he said. “This allows the user to focus on the creativity of his work.”

The cues were used to upmix the stereo transmitted signal to a 5.1 channel signal, and the professional broadcast contributed substantially to the event’s success.

Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’azam Shah had been appointed on December 13 last year to succeed Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu, whose 5-year term as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong had ended.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG(r), Harman Kardon(r), Infinity(r), JBL(r), Lexicon(r) and Mark Levinson(r). Broadcast Pix Unveils Multi-Screen Support at InfoComm 2012

PowerAux and Multiple Panels Drive Three ‘Program’ Outputs

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ will introduce new multi-screen support for its 1 M/E Granite™ and Mica™ Video Control Centers™ at InfoComm 2012, which runs June 13-15 in Las Vegas, Nev. (Booth C7345). Now, three “programs” can be generated using the system’s program output and two enhanced PowerAux outputs, and each can be controlled by a separate panel or Soft Panel.

The new multi-screen technology is ideal for driving three image magnification (I-MAG) screens, as each enjoys patented technology to maintain one frame of constant delay for continual lip sync throughout a presentation. In contrast, other systems have variable delay that changes depending on format/aspect conversion, effects, picture-in-picture (PiP), and other actions, plus many start with high delay as well. With PowerAux, additional outputs from the system stay in sync, even when different content is being displayed.

PowerAux can also be used to produce any combination of I-MAG screens, Internet feeds, and live television productions. Each new PowerAux output can switch between any camera, clip, graphic, or even program, and then add up to six keys on top. For example, while the program out provides I-MAG on one screen, one PowerAux can provide different programming to another screen while the second PowerAux can be used to feed different content to a streaming appliance for online distribution. All outputs can be controlled through the system control panel – for richer productions, each PowerAux output can be individually controlled through a Soft Panel, iPad app, or another physical control panel.

“Switchers don’t have to limit you to creating for one screen. Now, thanks to our multiple panels and our new dual PowerAux, you can create compelling video on three screens at once,” said Ken Swanton, CEO. “With our exceptional low constant delay, it’s great for the booming I-MAG market, plus Internet and television audiences, too. Producers can optimize their compositions for all audiences on any size screen.”

PowerAux is a free download available in Beta now, and will be available for all Granite and Mica customers with the release of Video Control Center 3.1 software in July.

About Broadcast Pix Broadcast Pix is the leader in live video production systems. Its Video Control Centers™ empower operators with patented techniques that combine cameras, clips and graphics to create compelling live video. The integration of a multi-format switcher, clip store, graphics system with a Harris or Chyron CG, and device controls provides the lowest cost of ownership at a fraction of the cost of a conventional control room to buy, staff and operate. Systems range from compact systems controlled by a touch-screen or voice-automation to sophisticated 2 M/E control panels. Customers include leading broadcast, corporate, education, religious, government, webcast, entertainment and mobile studios in more than 100 countries. Learn more at www.broadcastpix.com.

CPL Invests in New Panasonic, Sony and d&b Equipment

A very busy start to 2012 has resulted in West Midlands, UK, based video and AV specialist Central Presentations Ltd. (CPL) making substantial investments in its audio and AV departments.

Some of CPL’s staff and crew with the new Panasonic projectors

In keeping with the company’s commitment to premium brands and being able to offer its clients the most innovative technologies, the very latest Panasonic HD projectors have been ordered to add to hire stock, together with a range of Sony HD broadcast cameras plus d&b’s compact T Series line array sound systems … all to service CPL’s on-going live event work.
Panasonic
The inventory of HD Panasonic projectors has been boosted with the addition of the new Panasonic PT-DZ21K 3-chip 20K DLP projectors, which are among the first delivered in the UK.
This is the smallest 20K projector currently on the market, which is a primary reason for the choice, making it ideal for all applications and in particular any shows challenged for space or weight loadings in the roof.
At 60Kgs, a massively powerful machine is now a two person lift and an ultimately more handleable product, with all the brightness you would expect due to a unique quad-lamp system.
CPL has also bought some Panasonic DZ770s – the 7K variant in the same range – so Panasonic HD projection solutions are now available in 7, 10 and 20K ranges to cover all needs.
Director Matthew Boyse comments “Panasonic has proved to be one of the most reliable and popular rental items, and these are among the brightest and most innovative currently available – which is where we like to be. We also receive excellent service and support from Panasonic”.
d&b
d&b’s T-Series has been added to CPL’s audio inventory following the purchase of Q-Series earlier in the year, and subsequent positive feedback from clients.
“The product’s a massive favourite and we just can’t get enough of it,” says Boyse, adding that the T-Series and its expedient dimensions, great audio quality and precise directional control is another perfect complement. The T-Series is ideal for numerous small to medium shows and events requiring anything from multiple flown line arrays to single standalone cabinets.
It is also a universally good cross-rental item.
Sony
CPL has now replaced its entire camera stock with solid state devices which are more reliable and robust, more cost effective to run as no tapes and disposables are required, and the digital format also makes the workflow and processing faster, more flexible and convenient.
The latest purchase included a quantity of HXR-MC1P HD Minicams, which are very small and perfect for shooting from different and challenging angles. The completely self-contained camera units can be used anywhere.
Included in the package were multiple Sony HXR-MC50P – the smallest of the broadcast range – and HXR-NX5P cameras, complete with a range of signal converters and other accessories.
Also on the list was a Panasonic AW-HE50s hot head camera and controller – a very neat design combining excellent image quality with smooth pan / tilt and zoom operation and full HD sensors offering a 1920 x 1080 resolution and a host of other features.
Coolux
CPL again leads the way in the UK taking delivery of the latest Coolux Pandora’s Box media server technology, with the first Version 5’s in the country. Pandora’s Box is one of the most powerful and flexible media server video control systems, and the units are used daily on a diverse range of jobs.
All of this reflects a generally buoyant market among CPL’s client base.

BRU Server Solution Achieves Remarkable Results with Small Tree 10 Gigabit Copper Video Editing Switch and Network HBAs

Providing a robust server solution driving much larger system counts than a normal 1GbE environment can handle, TOLIS Group, manufacturers of ultra-reliable data backup and restore solutions for end-users and OEMs, was impressed by the notable data rate improvements its server achieved with Small Tree’s 10GbE solution.

Using the new 24 port 10GbE copper video switch – ST10G-28Cat6 – and 10GbE network cards from Small Tree in tandem with its BRU Server, the TOLIS team witnessed data throughput allowing streaming three LTO-5 drives simultaneously at a sustained rate of 140MB/sec per drive. According to Tim Jones, president and CTO of TOLIS, a 1GbE environment is lucky to achieve 90MB/sec to a single LTO-5 tape drive, thereby demonstrating the rock-solid performance of the BRU Server when connected to Small Tree’s 10GbE solution.

“One of the biggest backup bottlenecks that an IT staff faces with client server backup installations like our BRU Server solution in an environment with more than a few client systems is the available network bandwidth,” Jones said. “As soon as we tested the Small Tree 10GbE solution, we were floored. In fact, we ran out of test tape drives before we ran out of bandwidth.”

BRU Server, TOLIS Group’s premier network backup solution, provides client/server-based data backup and recovery services across networks of any size. Delivering reliability, functionality and flexibility to meet an organization’s backup needs, BRU Server offers ease-of-use with new graphical interfaces and numerous client-side options.

Small Tree’s ST10G-28Cat6 offers post-production facilities the ability to support 10 Gigabit Networks without needing expensive optics and cabling. With this new switch, which includes Small Tree’s proprietary, state-of-the-art network engineering, video editors can edit Pro Res 4444, uncompressed and 2k over affordable, ubiquitous Ethernet.

“In a 1GbE lab environment where we could normally only backup four client systems simultaneously to BRU Server’s disk stage environment, the Small Tree 10GbE solution allowed us to expand that to handle 20 concurrent systems,” Jones continued. “This translates to a 5:1 reduction of the backup window meaning that either more systems can be backed up in a given period, or fewer servers need to be assigned to handle the same number of client systems. Either translates to a huge potential ROI of the updated network infrastructure in a very short period.”
