At Infocomm 2012, Small Tree (Booth C5654 – Technologies for Worship pavilion) will demonstrate the ExpressBox 3T, recently introduced by Magma, which is the first three-slot PCI Express expansion chassis for Thunderbolt technology.
ExpressBox 3T, an ‘outside-the-box’ solution for using PCIe cards with Thunderbolt-equipped computers to enhance high performance workflows, is fully compatible with network software drivers developed by Small Tree.
“Magma and Small Tree have worked closely to ensure compatibility and high performance of our market leading Thunderbolt products,” said Randy Jones, president and CEO of Magma, developer and manufacturer of PCI & PCI Express Expansion Systems for servers, desktops and portable platforms. “Small Tree’s reputation as Mac Network and Ethernet based shared storage experts and Magma’s long standing expertise in expansion technology will provide customers with rock solid solutions leveraging the breakthrough Thunderbolt technology.”
Small Tree’s network software drivers were validated by Magma to be fully functional with ExpressBox 3T after undergoing and passing a series of rugged performance tests conducted at Magma’s San Diego facility.
“Small Tree was one of our first partners to provide fully compliant drivers that incorporate Thunderbolt expansion support for their 10Gige PCIe card,” Jones continued. “Support for advanced Thunderbolt features, like hot-plug and sleep, creates a positive user experience because it allows for graceful exit from applications in the event of an unexpected removal of the cable.”
For Corky Seeber, president of Small Tree, demonstrating Magma’s ExpressBox 3T at Infocomm is an illustration of the company’s ongoing commitment to providing solutions that promote real-time collaboration. “As the shift to Thunderbolt technology evolves, Small Tree will continue to offer shared storage and networking solutions that meet the industry’s demands,” said Seeber, president of Small Tree. “With the introduction of ExpressBox 3T, Magma has developed a leading-edge expansion solution that will add tremendous value to editing teams looking to maximize their efficiency and workflow, whether it’s large post-production facilities working on movies and TV shows for mass consumption, or small to mid-size teams at churches and universities working on projects for specific audiences.”
“Thunderbolt delivers unparalleled performance, flexibility and simplicity to personal computing.” said Jason Ziller, Intel’s director of Thunderbolt Marketing. “Products like Magma’s ExpressBox 3T and Small Tree’s network software drivers for Intel’s 10G Ethernet Converged Networking Adapter X540-T2 help highlight what Thunderbolt makes possible.”

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has chosen seven student filmmakers from six U.S. film schools as nominees in the 2012 ASC Andrew Laszlo Student Heritage Awards. A ceremony announcing the winners in each category will be held June 16. The awards are designed to showcase the artistic abilities of the next generation of filmmakers, with a focus on their cinematography skills.
The nominees are (listed alphabetically by film title in each category):
Graduate:
“Josephine and the Roach” by Damian Horan, University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts

Each year, the ASC Heritage Award is rededicated in memory of an individual who advanced the art and craft of cinematography. A Hungarian native, Andrew Laszlo, ASC was a talented cinematographer whose film and television career spanned 50-plus years, amassing such credits as You’re a Big Boy Now, The Night They Raided Minsky’s, The Out of Towners, The Owl and the Pussycat, The Warriors, Southern Comfort, First Blood, Streets of Fire, Innerspace, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. He earned Emmy® nominations for his work on Shogun and The Man Without a Country. Wayne, N.J. – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division, has announced that Jackson Hole, Wyoming-based Brain Farm Digital Cinema selected several FUJINON lenses for the company’s aerial cinematography and extreme sport shooting. The feature film, The Art of Flight, is Brain Farm’s latest feature film release using the FUJINON lenses. The death-defying film follows a team of professional snowboarders through remote backcountry terrain from Alaska to Jackson Hole to Patagonia as they conquer uncharted snowboarding territory.

Links to stills from the making of the film can be found here:
FUJINON lenses used for the film include the extreme telephoto HA42x9.7B zoom and the HA14x4.5B wide-angle ENG/EFP lens, incorporated into Brain Farm’s Cineflex stabilized HD aerial camera system. Brain Farm deploys this system primarily in helicopters for aerial cinematography, but also with land and boat based vehicle mounts in other productions.
“What stood out to me the first time I saw footage shot with the FUJINON lenses was the accurate color they produced and the sharpness of the lens,” saidChad Jackson, Executive Producer at Brain Farm. “We often film a subject from a very far distance, usually a mountain away. With the FUJINON lenses we captured extremely smooth, sharp images.”
In addition, other FUJINON lenses used in production of The Art of Flight included the HA25x16.5BERD, HA23x7.6BERM and HA14x4.5BERD zooms used on Panasonic VariCam 3700 camcorders. The FUJINON TS-P58A image stabilizer was used with their HA14x, HA25x and HA23x lenses on VariCams whenever they needed to stabilize ground-based images.
Brain Farm has used its FUJINON lenses in almost every project, including a current Visa Blackcard commercial, a series of World of Red Bull commercials, National Geographic’s critically acclaimed documentary program Great Migrations, and Nat Geo Wild’s adventure series Expedition Wild. “The FUJINON 42×9.7 we use in our Cineflex gimbal is very fast, with minimal fall off, and it has an incredible zoom range,” said Jackson. “We’ve never before been able to shoot so far away and keep the image so sharp.”
Curt Morgan, CEO/President/Owner of Brain Farm Digital Cinema, is the primary DP of the footage they shoot all over the world. “We’re thrilled to be involved with the breathtaking images that Curt and his team produce,” said Chuck Lee, technology manager, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division. “They really know how maximize the full visual potential of our lenses, and given the extreme weather and challenging conditions they are used in, Brain Farm’s work is a testament to the true durability and reliability of FUJINON lenses.”
The Art of Flight is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and iTunes. The film follows Travis Rice, John Jackson, and other extreme snowboarding daredevils as they dream up new global adventures and elevate the sport to unimaginable levels. For this film, Brain Farm gathered an arsenal of the most advanced and progressive filmmaking technology to capture a snowboarding adventure of epic proportions.

MEXICO CITY, JUNE 5, 2012 – TSL Professional Products Ltd., a leading manufacturer of audio monitoring, tally and power management solutions for the broadcast industry, will be showing its most recent products at the EXPO Cine, Video Televisión in Mexico City (See TSL at the Amtec Stand: A1), including a brand new multichannel audio monitoring platform, a new Virtual Panel for its TallyMan system and the Touchmix Pilot, which provides a more flexible control for creative operators who need instant access to audio sources.
The PAM2 MK2 Multichannel Audio Monitoring Unit (PAM2 3G16 MK2) delivers a new set of critical features for precision audio monitoring, including an SDI output connection to export display information to an external video monitor, a front-panel USB port for preset save/recall management and an Ethernet port providing network connectivity to Web browsers and system management software applications. The new platform is built upon TSL’s existing award-winning PAM2 features, including loudness-compliance monitoring and audio delay to match video latency, creating a system that helps simplify the complex world of broadcast audio.
TSL’s new TallyMan VP (Virtual Panel) with touch screen is designed to simplify control of multiple router I/Os. The intuitive user interface is engineered to be more in tune with the needs of creative operators in order to streamline production workflow.
The TallyMan VP software-based control platform removes the need to install individual hardware panels each time a router is added, expanded or upgraded. It can also interface with any third-party router, vision mixer or multi-viewer. This provides a “universal” control for operators who don’t need to be aware of source paths or any complicated working parts that sit behind the buttons.
Ideal for news operations, sporting events and remote head-ends, the panel also allows users to switch equipment on and off remotely, while offering heightened security for positions with limited functionality. Built to work in conjunction with TSL’s TallyMan tally management system, the TallyMan VP is a logical progression for the TallyMan range, which has become the industry de facto standard across broadcast workflows worldwide. The new panel provides immediate benefits for existing TallyMan users and offers an intuitive centralized platform for broadcasters who are looking to simplify their broadcast chain workflows.
TSL will also be showing its new Touchmix Pilot Desktop Remote system. The Touchmix Pilot, which consists of a new Desktop Remote panel with rack-mount host unit, provides one-touch access to any analog or digital audio source material in mono, stereo or surround, allowing for the adjustment of levels and balance, and delivers the capability to mix together multiple sources.
By using the Touchmix Pilot, directors, producers, editors and VT operators will have straightforward access to multiple audio sources literally at their fingertips. Designed with the latest touch screen technology, the intuitive user interface allows operators to tap the audio channel they wish to hear, mix together incoming sources and even adjust individual level and balance. Complex configuration snapshots can be loaded or saved using on-board memory locations or via the on-board USB port.
Developed for operation with TSL’s ground-breaking AVM-T-MIX (Touchmix), as well as other I/O devices, the system can be set up effortlessly in a matter of minutes due to its straightforward configurability. The Touchmix, a system design inspired by input from the BBC, is unlike any other compact audio monitoring product.

Bethesda, MD, June 4, 2012 — Pixeldust Studios, an Emmy Award-winning digital animation and visual design company with studios in the Metro D.C. area and New York City, has produced original animations for National Geographic Channel’s upcoming mini-series event Untamed Americas. The show premieres June 10-11 on the National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo MUNDO.
Pixeldust Studios produced highly detailed animations depicting the geography and topography of the North and South American continents, as seen by the viewer from above. Based on detailed satellite imagery and extensive research of these continents, the work was designed to embellish the above-the-Earth photography shot by the show’s producers.
To view some of this work, please see:
http://www.pixeldust.tv/work/untamed_americas/
Ashley Hoppin, Executive Producer of Untamed Americas for National Geographic Channels, said, “”Pixeldust’s stylistic aerials are both real and other-worldly. They make the viewer feel like he/she is flying up, down, and above the Americas, like Superman.”
“The challenge for us on this massive project was how to best recreate the vast terrain of North and South America using reference materials from satellite data and maps while keeping it manageable in a 3d animation software,” states Ricardo Andrade, Founder/Executive Creative Director of Pixeldust Studios. “We wished to present a photorealistic look to the terrain on the Earth but didn’t want to create the look of traditional maps,” comments Andrade. “Instead, we spent a good deal of time ensuring that the true colors, and the densities of the colors and the terrain, ranging from clouds to snow capped mountaintops to ground landscape to oceans, would match the video plates that were shot. Our CGI work had to blend in seamlessly with the actual video footage that the producers brought to us.”
“We used E-On’s Vue 10 software, which offered us billions of polygons, to depict the various elevations of the Earth’s terrain featured in this show,” adds Andrade. “We also incorporated Autodesk’s Maya 2013 software to create the camera moves as a viewer POV ‘fly-over,’ so there would be seamless transitions from the actual video plate projections, to our CGI terrain, and then back to the outgoing video plates.”
Samar Shool, Pixeldust Studios’ Technical Director, oversaw the challenge of creating an accurate and seamless look. “We had to present high-altitude travel scenery over everything from Alaska to Patagonia, while depicting every mountain and every detail of the Earth’s actual terrain,” comments Shool. “Our goal was to recreate these details exactly, based on the satellite imagery and other materials. We delivered digital set extensions that were both technologically and artistically correct, matching the starting point and ending point using video plates that were shot on location. We took our ‘look and feel’ references, colors, tones, and densities, from the beautiful footage that was presented to us by the producers of this program.”
In other Pixeldust Studios news, the company has significantly updated much of its technology with the addition of E-On Software’s Vue 10 product and with Southpawtech’s Tactic creative management software, joining the company’s long existing Autodesk’s Maya 2013 product. Pixeldust has also integrated GameCaster True Virtual Cinematography product into its production mix to help produce natural and organic camera moves inside any 3D package. Also, a new 3D Stereo edit room has been added expanding their 3D Stereo suite of tools. In addition, Pixeldust continues to regularly increase and expand its overall render farm capacity.
About Untamed Americas
Premiering Sunday, June 10–Monday, June 11, at 9 p.m. ET/PT in the U.S. and globally this summer, the four-hour high-definition miniseries event marks the first U.S. simulcast on National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo Mundo. Narrated by Academy Award-nominated actor Josh Brolin, Untamed Americas reveals the grit and glory in the wild of North America, Central America and South America. Each hour explores some of the greatest wildlife spectacles, delicate dances, unbelievable endurance and against-the-odds survival in episodes dedicated to the continent’s Mountains, Deserts, Forests and Coasts.
The Untamed Americas team spent almost two years in the field, traveling thousands of miles from Alaska to Patagonia, to capture the extreme wildlife of the continent. To film the rare moments, Untamed Americas cameramen and producers rappelled down Peruvian cliffs in sea lion territory with bruised shins and battered heads; endured jellyfish stings in Monterey Bay, Calif.; slipped
down mud paths and stumbled through dark, dense underbrush in the Ecuadorean cloud forest; faced subzero temperatures (-22°F) as well as extreme heat with 100 percent humidity; maneuvered through freak out-of-season hurricanes; grasped for breath in high altitudes; lost sleeping bags (and sleep!) in 80 mph winds in Chile; and were even stalked by a puma.

ELKHART, Indiana – New York now has a new world-class casino: Resorts World, the first entertainment destination of its kind located within the five boroughs. Resorts World boasts more than 2,200 slot machines and assorted electronic table games, numerous restaurants and entertainment facilities – and a casino-wide networked audio system featuring more than 130 BSS Audio devices, 50 Crown CTs Series amplifiers and hundreds of JBL loudspeakers.
Commercial and residential systems contractor The Integration Factory of Rockledge, FL handled the installation of the system, which is used for background music, paging and announcements. The system is built around four BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-800 Signal Processors, four BLU-320 I/O Expanders, 10 BLU-32 I/O Expanders, nine BLU-80 Signal Processors (all with CobraNet(tm)), eight BLU-8v2 Programmable Zone Controllers, 39 Analog Input Cards, 49 Analog Output Cards, a Digital Input Card and two Digital Output Cards. Amplification is provided by 34 Crown CTs 4200A and 17 CTs 1200 power amplifiers.
“We chose the Soundweb London components because of their networking capabilities, proven performance in many previous installations and their ability to interface with the Crown amps via HiQnet System Architect(tm). The Soundweb London components also operate perfectly with the control system the client wanted, and the HiQnet London Architect drag-and-drop programming interface really speeds up the setup and configuration process,” said Carlos Gonzalez, Senior Manager, The Integration Factory.
The system employs an extensive complement of JBL loudspeakers including 428 Control(r) Contractor 26C/T and 410 Control 226C/T in-ceiling speakers, 22 Control 47L/P low-profile in-ceiling models, 108 Control 67P/T pendant speakers and a pair of LSR2328P monitors.
“In a system as complex as this one, we knew we had to have components that worked together seamlessly and flawlessly,” added Gonzalez. “There are more than 36 zones in the property.”
“The Crown amplifiers provide the best value and reliability of any amplifiers I know,” Gonzalez continued, “and they’re ideal for fixed installations like Resorts World because of their easy integration with HiQnet and CobraNet, which provides comprehensive control and monitoring capabilities and the ability to send digital audio directly over the network to the amplifiers. Let’s not forget that they also deliver outstanding sound.”

World Renowned Skateboarder, Ryan Sheckler, Captures Personal “Streets of New York” Experience with 50 Wi-Fi Enabled GoPro Cameras.
HALF MOON BAY, CA (June 4, 2012) – GoPro, maker of the world’s most versatile cameras and producer of some of today’s most engaging online programming, has just made it easier for people to capture professional quality content during any activity. The company officially released its much-anticipated Wi-Fi BacPac™ + Wi-Fi Remote Combo Kit, allowing people to control multiple GoPro cameras at a time using either a smartphone, tablet, or the included waterproof Wi-Fi Remote.
Additional features include live streaming video from GoPro cameras to smartphones, tablets and directly to the web via a soon-to-be-released software update. The Wi-Fi BacPac attaches to the back of GoPro cameras to Wi-Fi enable them. The waterproof and wearable Wi-Fi Remote can control up to 50 GoPro cameras at a time from a range of 600’ (180m).
“GoPro makes it easy for people to capture immersive and engaging footage of themselves during their favorite activities,” said Nicholas Woodman, GoPro’s founder and CEO. “The professional quality content our customers are capturing is inspiring them to use several GoPros at a time to document their experiences from multiple perspectives…something you’d normally see only on professional production shoots. A new era of ‘personal production’ has begun and Wi-Fi-enabling our cameras gives GoPro customers even more creative control to capture some of the most meaningful content in the world: their lives. Plus, live streaming video from your GoPro to your smartphone or the web is extremely cool and opens up so many new ways to use a GoPro.”
When considering how to celebrate its new product launch, GoPro asked its team of sponsored athletes for their idea of a dream video production that would involve them controlling all of the cameras on the shoot. World-renowned skateboarder Ryan Sheckler had the idea to skate an area of New York City that he’d always dreamt about, documenting his experience using the new Wi-Fi Remote to control 50 GoPro cameras positioned along his path.
The resulting short film, “New York City”, documents a “day-in-the-life” skate from the top of the Manhattan Bridge through Chinatown, finishing at the entrance to the storied Lower East Side skate park – considered by many to be the mecca of street skating. Along the way Sheckler captures not only his inspired skating but also the sites, sounds and color that are NYC. As with all GoPro releases, the film was shot entirely on GoPro cameras:
“This is something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Ryan Scheckler. “To skate through a part of New York City that thousands of people ride through every week, feeling the energy of one of the original stomping grounds of street skating. That I finally got to do it and document it with the support of GoPro is awesome. I’m already thinking of my next project and hopefully this inspires other people to realize and document their own creative ideas.”
The Wi-Fi BacPac + Wi-Fi Remote Combo Kit is now available for $99.99 on GoPro.com and at retailers across the U.S. and Europe with availability expanding globally. A future software update will enable live video streaming to the web directly from a GoPro camera. Additionally, a free, soon-to-be-released GoPro App will enable GoPro cameras to live video stream to – as well as be controlled by – iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
“New York City” debuts today on GoPro’s website, GoPro’s Facebook Page as well as on The GoPro Network. The GoPro Network features some of today’s most engaging programming, showcasing the world’s top professional and consumer generated GoPro-captured content.
