In explaining about the technology installed, Alan Williams, Operations Manager at Atlas AV says: “The interpretation designs provided by Ralph Appelbaum Associates and interior fit-out by Beck Interiors are complemented by state of the art audio visual technology.”

“projection is prominent within the exhibition and displays are all individually warped and blended using Delta Media Servers to fit the contours of the historic building with masks placed on the edges for a soft edge. Uncompressed content created by Center Screen Productions is controlled by 7thSense Design Delta central media servers, providing frame accurate synchronised projections with 32 channels of audio over CobraNet to provide genlocked audio in addition to genlocked video displayed in stunning 1080p HD.”

“One area presents to visitors over 25 metres of bespoke projection all perfectly synchronised. The display acts as a single image punctuated only by the character of the ancient monument bringing the history and spectacle of The Crown Jewels to life.”

It is expected that there will be 3 million visitors to the exhibition this year as attention focuses on HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. Please see more information from the historic Royal Palaces Website, http://www.hrp.org.uk/TowerOfLondon/stories/crownjewels.

New Professional Product Line Puts Faceware’s Complete Facial Animation Tool Suite Into Animator’s Hands

Faceware’s New End-to-End Tool Suite Helps Animators Create High-Fidelity Facial Performances 3-10x Faster than Hand Keying

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 31, 2012 – Faceware Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of 3D facial animation software for the video game, film, television and commercial industries, today announced that it has launched its Faceware Professional Product Line, a low-cost, start-to-finish facial animation tool suite built to capture, analyze and create realistic facial performances 3-10x faster than hand keying that same performance. The Faceware Professional Product Line, which until now has only been in production testing at select studios, includes completely updated versions of the Faceware Head-Mounted Camera System (HMCS) and Faceware Retargeter, and a brand new product called Faceware Analyzer. This marks the first time Faceware has offered all of its internal technologies for use in studios.
“With shrinking budgets and shorter production timelines, studios are trying to create better quality animations earlier in the production process to save both time and money,” said Ron Ryder, CEO of Faceware Technologies. “By offering all of our technologies as a turnkey suite of hardware and software that can be operated internally, we’re giving studios greater control of their animation timeline and their valuable IP, and enabling them to create better facial performances at the beginning of the production process.”

“This is our first time working with Faceware and we have been very impressed by their products and team,” said a spokesperson from the animation studio, Marza Animation Planet. “Faceware is a boon for our studio through its ability to reduce costs by speeding up the animation process. Integrating both Faceware Retargeter and Faceware Head Mounted Cameras into our production has required little effort and has been a smooth transition for our animation team.”
The Faceware Professional Product Line has its roots in the Company’s extensive knowledge and research in computer vision techniques in facial and gesture recognition, and from the Company’s vast experience in providing facial animation services on groundbreaking projects such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Wolfman, the Grand Theft Auto series, Red Dead Redemption, Halo: Reach and many others.
The Faceware Professional Product Line consists of technologies to handle every step in the facial animation process: video capture, performance analysis, and facial animation creation:
CAPTURE: The Faceware Head-Mounted Camera System (HMCS) consists of a durable helmet, bracing, camera mount and camera, and works in tandem with MoCap suits to capture data-rich facial video complete with time code. Now in its 5th generation, the HMCS is capable of capturing up to 7 million pixels per second for incredible performance fidelity. It is available for rent or purchase.
ANALYZE: Faceware Analyzer is a new product offering from Faceware Technologies. It allows customers to analyze facial performances captured with the HMCS or other video capturing technology for a small processing fee only. The animator “trains” Faceware Analyzer to learn about the actor’s specific appearance and performance, and the software uses that information to analyze every frame of the video. All tracking is handled on site, so no assets or IP leave the studio. Once the shot is tracked, computer vision algorithms parameterize the data to examine every pixel of facial data in the performance and to create an IMPD file that can then be used in Faceware Retargeter.

CREATE: The updated Faceware Retargeter is a free tool that takes the IMPD file created in Analyzer and transfers the data onto the 3D model. With a newly designed front end and a handful of new features, Faceware Retargeter creates a more complete blocking of the animation and gives animators more time to polish the performance with realistic facial movements. The Retargeter can be used on any type of facial rig, and plugs into many different software packages (Maya, 3ds Max, Softimage, MotionBuilder), letting the animator work in a familiar environment and workflow.
Faceware Analyzer and Retargeter are free to evaluate and can be downloaded directly from Faceware’s website, www.facewaretech.com. Both come with a free IMPD Performance Library and Rig Library, to help users get up to speed faster. The Faceware HMCS is available for rent or purchase. Dataton brings colour, movement and sound to Les Baux de Provence

Dataton brings colour, movement and sound to Les Baux de Provence

Dataton is delighted to announce that its WATCHOUT multi-display and show-management software has been used as a core technology at a major new art installation in the south of France.

A collaboration between the town of Les Baux de Provence and the specialist French venue management company Culturespaces, ‘Carrières de Lumières’ (‘Quarries of Light’) is a hi-tech re-purposing of the Carrières du Val d’Enfer – a network of abandoned chalk-mining tunnels close to the historic Provençal village.

With a subterranean feel, the Carrières de Lumières is a labyrinth almost 200 metres long that varies in height between 10 and 15 metres. In its newly re-invented form, the space provides the perfect backdrop for large-scale video projection – a place where visitors can view images close to or from a greater distance away, while the unique texture of the chalk surfaces adds further visual interest to whatever artistic content is being displayed.

The Carrières de Lumières opened to the public in March of this year with its first show – ‘Gauguin, Van Gogh, les peintres de la couleur.’ The show, which literally throws new light on the colours used by two of art history’s most celebrated painters by projecting still photographs and video animations oftheir works, was commissioned from designer Gianfranco Iannuzzi by Culturespace founder Bruno Monnier.

As well as the walls of the former quarry, the show uses the floor as a projection surface, while a discreetly installed audio system plays a series of atmospheric 12-track musical backgrounds through a network of 50 loudspeakers. A stage-lighting setup based on LED sources accentuates the stonework with raking light at times when the ‘screens’ are not showing any content.

In all, there are 68 video projectors, all ceiling-mounted to minimize the impact of projected light beams on visitors. Each projector has its own server content running an individual Dataton WATCHOUT™ channels. These, together with a second machine running the Medialon Manager show-control system with which WATCHOUT runs in sync, make a total of 70 devices in total – all housed in an air-conditioned control room located on-site but accessible only by staff.

The WATCHOUT-equipped servers were supplied by Videmus, Dataton’s partner for WATCHOUT in France. The company worked closely with an installation team led by technical manager Sebastien Chapuis, and with project staff Mathieu Delfine, Florence Amat and Agathe Poisson.

“The project team liked the WATCHOUT solution because of its simplicity,” explains Eric Lambert, managing director, Videmus. “As well as ensuring that all the projectors receive their video content at full resolution and in perfect sync with each other, WATCHOUT also uses MIDI commands to sequence the on-site audio DSP settings so that the right soundtrack is played through the right speakers at the right time, while at the same time controlling a DMX-512 universe for the LED lighting.

“All this is then managed by Medialon Manager show-control system, which operates a seven-day calendar so that the show begins and ends every day, at the right time of day, without the staff having to worry about a thing.”

(c) Videmus

Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director, Dataton, comments: “The Carrières de Lumières is a fantastic space in which to appreciate art and represents a brilliant usage of WATCHOUT. The effects created are truly stunning and we feel sure that they will lead to a greater appreciation not just of these great paintings, but also of the old stone quarry itself.”

The final word goes to the show’s designer, Gianfranco Iannuzzi, who enthuses: “The deployment of WATCHOUT and the support of Videmus during the three months of setup for this show were truly invaluable. They allowed me to devote myselfentirely to the design and content creation which, with the help of my staff, Massimiliano Siccardi and Renato Gatto, we managed to realize on time and with, we believe, truly unique results.”

Projecting Europeana archive data through the 3D ‘ECloud’

projectiondesign® sponsors Europeana initiative to drive creative use of open data

Norway’s projectiondesign® is delighted to announce that it has become a headline sponsor of the Europeana General Plenary, to be held in the Belgian city of Leuven from 13-15 June.

Adopting the theme ‘Connecting Society Through Culture’, the Europeana plenary aims to showcase innovative approaches to digitised content, inspire new ideas among its attendees, and to connect people and concepts so that those new ideas are realised. The event is expected to attract around 250 professionals from cultural heritage institutions, the open data community, and the software and technology development industries.

Caption: Vice President of the European Commission Neelie Kros explores Europeana

Europeana videoWatch the video at http://vimeo.com/42113873.

A key attraction at the Europeana plenary will be the ECloud – a unique visual experience featuring personal stories of World War I collected across Europe as part of Europeana’s 1914-18 family history roadshows. As part of its event sponsorship, projectiondesign will supply six F35 AS3D active stereoscopic 3D projectors to power the ECloud – creating a 9m x 3m interactive videowall that enables the browsing and display of multiple web pages simultaneously.

Pioneered by Dr Sarah Kenderdine and Prof Jeffrey Shaw, the ECloud is a collaboration between Europeana, City University Hong Kong’s Applied Laboratory for Interactive Visualization and Embodiment, and Australia’s Museum Victoria. The work builds on the large-screen 3D data visualizations being undertaken at City University Hong Kong’s ALiVE project, advancing the way that ALiVE re-uses archival databases coming directly from the internet.

“The purpose of this project is to provide both audiences and participating cultural organizations a renewed appreciation of the wealth of the Europeana datasets online,” comments Sarah Kenderdine.

“It focuses on World War I materials as a front-running project to the 2014 100th anniversary of the start of WWI. The project demonstrates that using the semantic relationships in existing metadata, ECloud can take advantage of Europeana APIs and the high-resolution content existing in Europeana partner repositories – in a public exhibition setting.

“3D allows us to re-define 2D data into a dynamic visualizations, increasing both appeal of the data and cognitive impact of the large format images distributed in 3D space. Such visualization strategies continue to hint at the endless permutations available to the user in a way that 2D designs cannot.

“We believe projectiondesign is the perfect partner for a project like the ECloud, because their 3D projector solutions, hardware architectures for edge-blending, and geometry correction for large-scale, multi-projector arrays are the most robust and reliable out there. We work exclusively with projetiondesign.”

Prior to the Europeana plenary, the ECloud made its public debut at a major event in Brussels on Wednesday 9 May. Hosted jointly by Europeana and the European Commission, the event is intended to raise awareness of Europeana’s rich resources and to demonstrate how Europe’s online cultural heritage can drive creativity and digital innovation. The event will be attended by around 100 stakeholders from cultural institutions and the creative industries.

“Europeana is a single access point to millions of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records that have been digitised throughout Europe,” explains Harry Verwayen, Business Development Manager, Europeana. “It is an authoritative source of information coming from European cultural and scientific institutions.

“What I like about the ECloud installation we’ve created is that it transforms flat representations of cultural artifacts into a real experience. It is truly innovative approach and we are very happy about how it worked out.”

“The cultural significance of 3D and interactive visualization technology have always been important for us at projectiondesign,” says the company’s Thierry Ollivier. “Supplying projectors to the ECloud is not just about putting our name in front of Europe’s creative community; it is about opening people’s eyes – quite literally – to the possibilities opened up by the digitisation of archive content, and by the public’s open access to that content.

“We are delighted to have this chance to be associated with the ECloud and with the Europeana project generally.”
