New York City’s Masterdisk Counts on Antelope Audio Trinity/10M Combination for its Image Stability and Sonic Integrity

New York, January 30, 2012 — Masterdisk, one of New York City’s foremost mastering facilities, has installed several of Antelope Audio’s Isochrone Trinity Master Clock and 10M Rubidium Atomic Clock units in its mastering suites, to maintain stereo imaging and the overall sonic integrity of projects passing through its studios. Masterdisk is installing multiple Antelope Audio Zodiac D/A converters at listening stations throughout the facility for quality control purposes.

According to owner Scott Hull, Masterdisk’s mastering suites were constructed with very high quality acoustics and solid grounding, and were already well clocked —therefore they did not appear to be candidates for improvement. “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” he says. Yet, the Antelope 10M — which incorporates a reference generator that is 100,000 times more accurate than the quartz oscillators in most equipment — and the Trinity, which offers 64-bit DSP and up to 384 kHz audio streaming, have had a noticeable impact on performance clocking the digital audio converters in the rooms.

“Image stability can’t be generated, and it has to be maintained through the process,” explains Hull. “You can undo certain effects or jitter but you can’t ‘reimage’ something; you can’t get that image back once you lose it.”

As he further elaborates, any component within the signal chain has the potential to degrade the accuracy of the soundstage. “A lot of processors and many, if not all, workstations give you something back that isn’t quite as stable, as rock-solid, as what you put in,” says Hull. However, driving every component in the system from a high quality master clock can reduce the likelihood of any degradation. “Workstations simply work better by being clocked with a more stable clock. Every step along the way where you can give yourself a tenth of a percent, it adds up to something pretty noticeable at the end. And there’s a marked and audible improvement in the final product when everything is Antelope powered,” he states.

Keeping True Quality Control at the Helm
Hull believes that true quality control at the mastering stage has become increasingly overlooked as budgets have become tighter and clients’ time and involvement have decreased. “We really have to know exactly what we’re sending out the door. We have to have at least two sets of ears on every product that we send out. So we’re putting Antelope Zodiac DACs into several listening stations in our facility just to facilitate quality control passes. Suffice it to say we consider that to be one of the best and most open and accurate DACs we can get. Coupled with the headphone amp, this gives us really good functionality for hearing exactly what’s going out the door at 192 kHz or 96k or 44.1.”

As Hull recalls, one of his mastering engineers initially heard about Antelope Audio’s clocks from his clients, and had a unit brought in to evaluate. He also notes that veteran mastering engineer Vlado Meller, who joined Masterdisk when Universal Mastering Studios closed in mid-2011, was a longtime Antelope Audio user. “Once we’d worked with it and got more of the boxes in more of the rooms we came to like what it did,” Hull reports. “The integrity and sonic experience was better overall, and everyone was happy.”

What matters, he continues, is the integrity of the system from beginning to end, and utilizing a high definition master clock can make a difference to the end result. “Sometimes it’s analog, sometimes it’s digital, sometimes it’s digital and analog. But they do like to play together better when they’re locked to a common master reference. When you’re working from a 96k file or a digital device at 96k, through an analog console and back out to a CD master at 44.1, the fact that everything is resolved to a common reference seems to work.” He comments, “I’m just trying to get to an end result that makes the client nod their head.”

“Mastering Your Favorite Records Since 1973”
Established in 1973, Masterdisk has handled projects by a who’s who of the music business over the years, including – to name just a few mastered by Hull – Bob Dylan, Sting, Lou Reed, Steely Dan, Bruce Springsteen, Panic at the Disco, plus many, many others. Hull recently mastered “25 Years”, a retrospective 4-disc box set from Sting, and Vlado Meller recently mastered new albums for Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction — including iTunes-optimized masters to go along with the vinyl and CD.

Acura to Debut Super Bowl XLVI Commercial, First for the Brand

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 30, 2012—Acura, for the first time, will run a commercial during the Super Bowl championship game to capitalize on communicating with the more than 100 million viewers. Designed to strengthen Acura brand awareness and leverage Acura’s announcement in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show earlier this month, a 60-second commercial featuring the iconic talent of Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno coupled with the highly anticipated NSX supercar concept will air during the third quarter.

“Acura has a specific plan in place across all communication channels to build off of the first round of product news announced at the North American International Auto Show. The response to the ILX, RDX and NSX supercar concept has been extremely positive,” said Susie Rossick, Acura Brand Manager. “Our Super Bowl strategies are simple—build upon the buzz created in Detroit and leverage the excitement for the future return of the legendary NSX to the Acura lineup.”

This commercial, “Transactions,” depicts the over-the-top antics of two actual top car collectors, Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, in an unrelenting bid to be the first in line to take delivery on the first Acura NSX.

“The goal is to present a commercial that not only clearly positions the NSX as the ultimate ‘must have’ sports car, but does it in a way that is memorable, entertaining and aligned with Acura’s brand position,” said John Hage, EVP/executive creative director at rp&, Acura’s advertising agency of record.

The Super Bowl campaign includes a pre-game release of a 1-minute 50-second—extended version of “Transactions,” PR initiatives, search, seeding and paid media placements. The commercial will be featured in Acura dealerships across the country. In addition, as the preferred vehicle of W Hotels, the commercial will be shown in-car on the MDX’s rear-entertainment DVD screen during guest rides.

“Transactions” will help to build upon the anticipation coalescing for the next chapter of Acura, which commences this spring with the launch of the all-new RDX crossover sport utility vehicle and the introduction of the all-new ILX luxury compact sedan.

CES 2012 Exhibitors, Keynotes Rely on PESA Routers

Huntsville, Alabama – The 2012 International CES, a high-profile annual event to promote the consumer electronics industry, was held earlier this month in Las Vegas, Nev., and PESA routers played a significant role behind the scenes for several exhibitors and the keynote presentations from Ericsson, Intel, Microsoft, and Qualcomm.

Staging Techniques, an event staging company with offices in California, New York, Atlanta, and Seattle, was contracted to provide to provide video support for the keynotes in cooperation with the overall event management firm, The Production Network (TPN). “The CES Keynotes are an average sized show for us, with an audience size of approximately 2,000,” explained Bryce Will, general manager of Staging Techniques. “Where it does get fairly involved is with the technical complexity. Four different clients – all high technology companies – make for a pretty demanding environment. Lots of different sources, many different signal formats, and the quick changeovers required between the rehearsals and shows keep things exciting.”

The keynotes were streamed live and archived for on-demand viewing by the Consumer Electronics Association, Staging Techniques’ primary client, as well as the individual keynote companies. Two PESA Cheetah 64NE HD-SDI routers were used to feed video switchers for live HD cameras and other sources during each of the presentations. Will said the PESA routers are permanently installed in the company’s HD flypacks.

“Company-wide, we use almost exclusively PESA signal routing systems,” Will added. “They are just that reliable. We have been a PESA customer since 1996, and the vast majority of our production systems are based around PESA technology.”

With its universal device control (UDC) software and other technology, Clarkston, Michigan-based High Resolution Systems (HRS) provided support during the keynotes for Staging Techniques. HRS also provided rental and staging services for a major CES exhibitor, and used a PESA Ocelot 16×16 HD routing switcher to manage signals for a large video wall display in its booth. “Out of all of our HD-SDI routers, the PESA router has proven to be the most reliable,” said Drew Taylor, HRS applications engineer.

NEP Broadcasting, a Pittsburgh-based company that provides teleproduction services for live sports and entertainment events, supported another major CES exhibitor with one of its 3D-dedicated mobile production units, SS31, which features a PESA Cheetah 144×256 HD video router. “SS31 produced a 3D broadcast for the 3D network,” said George Hoover, chief technology officer. “The Cheetah is at the core of the production, handling signal distribution and routing for the entire show.”

“It was an honor to be part of such an important production initiative supporting the keynote addresses at CES,” said Chuck Tillett, president and COO of PESA. “We understand the critical level of support our customers must provide in live venue presentations, and are pleased to be recognized for our long-standing reputation of quality products, service and support.”

Honda Pays Homage to Famous Film in Super Bowl XLVI Commercial

Award-winning actor Matthew Broderick is starring in a fourth-quarter Super Bowl commercial to promote the all-new 2012 Honda CR-V.

“Matthew’s Day Off” is part of an integrated, multiplatform advertising campaign that began earlier this month to support the launch of the all-new Honda CR-V. The campaign encourages the active, hip Gen-Y audience transitioning between their carefree twenties and their more focused thirties to conquer their aspirations by completing their own “Leap List.”

“Our primary goal is to support the launch of the all-new CR-V, a pillar vehicle in the Honda lineup, while representing the inherent fun and youthfulness of the Honda brand,” said Tom Peyton, Honda brand manager, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Playing off the Leap List concept, “Matthew’s Day Off,” directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Due Date, Old School), stars Broderick playing himself while drawing on his well-known coming-of-age character that the CR-V target audience grew up watching.

“As with our other CR-V commercials that began airing this month, this fun commercial reminds viewers to go out and embrace life – do the things you want to do, not just the things you have to do,” said Joe Baratelli, EVP, ECD at RPA, Honda’s longstanding agency of record.

Hidden in the commercial are dozens of “Easter eggs” reflective of the original film. Fans are encouraged to watch the spot closely to see how many references they can find. For example, an iconic vest that was worn in the original movie is visible in a department store window that appears briefly. To view the commercial and comment on the “Easter eggs,” viewers can go to http://www.facebook.com/hondacrv.

To build anticipation for Honda’s Super Bowl commercial an eight-second teaser, “Coming Soon,” was loaded onto YouTube on Jan. 26 and amassed nearly four million views. A pre-game release of a 2-minute 23-second extended version of “Matthew’s Day Off” will be supported by public relations, search marketing and social media. In addition, Honda fans will get a sneak peek of the Super Bowl ad on Honda’s Facebook page and Google+ page, which was just launched last week. Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #dayoff online when talking about Honda’s Super Bowl commercial. Momentum will continue the week after the game with several large portal takeovers featuring “Matthew’s Day Off.”

Harrison Ford to be Feted by American Society of Cinematographers

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 30, 2012 — Harrison Ford, the venerable actor who immortalized Han Solo and Indiana Jones, will receive the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) 2012 Board of Governors Award. Ford will be honored during the 26th Annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards gala here on February 12 at the Hollywood & Highland Grand Ballroom.

“Harrison Ford is a talented and focused actor whose professionalism has earned the admiration of our members,” says ASC Awards Chairman Richard Crudo. “His diverse, and still evolving, body of work includes too many memorable motion pictures to list.”

Ford earned an Academy Award® nomination in 1986 for his compelling role as John Book in Witness. In 2000, the American Film Institute bestowed him with their Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to receiving four nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press for his roles in Sabrina (1996), The Fugitive (1994), The Mosquito Coast (1987), and Witness, Ford was revered by the organization with the 2002 Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes.

Ford’s Hollywood career was launched by his portrayal of Bob Falfa in George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973). Four years later, he landed the now-legendary role of Han Solo in George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. In 1981, Ford brought Indiana Jones to screens for Steven Spielberg in Raiders of the Lost Ark. His many other credits include, Apocalypse Now, The Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Regarding Henry, Patriot Games, The Fugitive, Clear and Present Danger, Sabrina, Air Force One, What Lies Beneath, K-19: The Widowmaker, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Extraordinary Measures, Morning Glory, and Cowboys & Aliens. Several of these movies represent some of the highest-grossing films by year.

Ford is currently preparing for a role in Ender’s Game, the film adaptation of the popular alien invasion sci-fi novel, and he will star in 42 as Branch Rickey, the Major League Baseball executive who helped shatter baseball’s color barrier by making Jackie Robinson the first African-American player in MLB.

The ASC Board of Governors Award is given annually to an individual who has made extraordinary achievements to advancing the art and craft of filmmaking. Previous recipients include Julia Roberts, Warren Beatty, Francis Ford Coppola, Sally Field, Morgan Freeman, Ron Howard, Sydney Pollack, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, among others.

“Many of our members who have collaborated with Harrison Ford were inspired by his extraordinary talent,” says ASC President Michael Goi. “His presence on set raises the bar for everyone in the cast and crew,” We are thrilled to honor his career, and I know many of our members hope to have an opportunity to work with him in the future.”

WorldStage Emerges a Winner at Showtime Sports’ “Super Six World Boxing Classic” in Atlantic City

Showtime Sports

Showtime Sports

WorldStage Inc. (the new brand for Scharff Weisberg and Video Applications) scored a knock out when it supported the final championship event for Showtime Sports’ “Super Six World Boxing Classic” at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on December 17, 2011.

WorldStage provided three big LED walls of varying sizes, a large Encore system for switching and routing, Pandoras Box systems for playback, audio for ground-level fill, a comprehensive lighting package and some of the rigging for the event. The championship capped a groundbreaking, two-year tournament featuring the best super middleweight boxers battling fight-by-fight until only Andre Ward and Carl Froch remained. Ward won in a 12-round decision broadcast live on Showtime.

“The championship was an enhanced version of a normal boxing match,” says Jim Ferrara, lighting designer and production manager with Frank Gatto Lighting, which has numerous clients in Mixed Martial Arts and boxing. “Normally, there’s ring lighting and moving lights. But this was the finale and a really big deal in the boxing world. So WorldStage delivered the additional bells and whistles: a lot more lighting effects, video playback and enhanced audio.”

WorldStage’s extensive LED inventory and expertise with the technology made the company the ideal choice to supply the venue’s Entrance, Feature and Banner LED walls.

The Entrance wall was a custom-designed triumphal entryway 32 feet wide and 14 feet at its highest point with a door in the middle, for the fighters to enter through, and 11×8-foot curved return wings on either side. The Entrance wall was comprised of 150 WinVision 18 tiles.

Suspended to one side of the boxing ring was the 14.7×25.7-foot Feature wall consisting of 112 WinVision 12 tiles. A ribbon-shaped Banner wall was located above the edge of the ring; this LED wall measured 5.5×23.8 feet and was created from 32 Everbrighten 15 tiles.

Feeding the entire system were three (and one back up) Pandoras Box systems from WorldStage, which were programmed by Alex Bright. Over 9TB of content were delivered to WorldStage where they were encoded and edited in the company’s Mini MRC Rack.

Each Pandoras Box hit a 32×32 Encore DVI router that fed Encore VPs and Avitech multiviewers. Mike Alboher was WorldStage’s EIC and Encore programmer.

“Using the Encore allowed us to switch screens from Pandora [content] to feeds from the production truck sending the show out live,” explains WorldStage event manager Josh Perlman. “The Encore also color corrected all the LED walls for optimum camera viewing.”

Although there was very little time to ready this complex equipment for broadcast, “everybody at WorldStage did very well,” says Ferrara. “Fans were treated to a great spectacle and a very exciting evening.”

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.

MIDCAN BECOMES FIRST IN CANADA TO RENT FUJINON’S VERSATILE NEW TELEPHOTO LENS FOR STAGING AND PRODUCTION

Wayne, N.J.– If there’s one thing a broadcast-quality rental and staging firm quickly learns, it’s that the critical choice of equipment can make or break their reputation. This factor was top of mind for Winnipeg, Manitoba’s award-winning MidCanada Production Services when they purchased the first FUJINON XA50x9.5BESM HD Telephoto Lens delivered in Canada.

MidCan Director of Operations Chris McIvor explained that it’s all about finding the sweet spot of versatility and affordability, while providing the quality and durability that his rental operation demands. “We thought it was a great idea for FUJIFILM to offer a multi-purpose studio/ENG box lens with a built-in camera mount,” he said. “As a rental house, that was really important to us because we have a wide variety of cameras, more than thirty in stock. Since we don’t need separate mounts, the lens will work with any of our cameras. Mounting the lens is simpler, and the cameras are lighter and easier to use.”

McIvor noted that the other big deciding factor in MidCan’s choice was the fast lens speed: “The 1.7 aperture gives us the opportunity to shoot in very low light conditions. We don’t do stage lighting, but in rental and staging you never know for sure the lighting conditions in the particular environment you’ll be facing. It could be a concert one day, a sporting event the next.

FUJIFILM Optical Devices Division designed the XA50x9.5BESM with this kind of flexibility in mind for any type of large venue requiring tight shots at long distances. The lens features the Digi Power servo control system and Digital Quick Zoom to control the lens function quickly and accurately for all production environments. While McIvor is excited about the possibility of using the lens to shoot professional hockey games for Winnipeg’s new Jets franchise, he also sees many applications across Canada for live conferences and tradeshows.

“This lens is in a price range that is very affordable in the staging market for such a long telephoto lens with a great aperture,” he explained. The new lens is actually just one of a wide variety of Fujinon lenses in MidCan’s rental inventory. McIvor noted, “We get a lot of requests especially for the HA16x6.3BERD ENG/EFP lens. It’s a great mid-range choice with a combination of wide angle and high zoom range that everyone seems to enjoy. And, like all our FUJINON lenses, it’s delivered terrific quality and durability.”

McIvor added that in the demanding rental and staging business, it’s essential to work with manufacturers who support their products with great customer service. “We’ve enjoyed a great partnership with FUJIFILM. Our rep, Stosh Durbacz, is terrific. He’s one of those guys who will bend over backwards to make something happen, as he did in working with us to get the new lens here in Winnipeg and ready for the Canadian market. Thanks to his efforts, it’s boxed up and ready to be on a plane today. We couldn’t be happier.”

Audio-Technica Kicks Off “50 Years of Passionate Listening” Anniversary Celebration with Special Gala Event at NAMM Show

STOW, OH, January 27, 2012 — Audio-Technica, a leading innovator in transducer technology, is this year marking “50 Years of Passionate Listening” with its yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration. The anniversary year officially kicked off in the U.S. with a special gala event during the 2012 Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. The party took place at Disney California Adventure Park on the evening of Thursday, January 19, 2012. A-T’s 700-plus special guests included musicians (including several Audio-Technica endorsers), recording arts professionals, dealers, distributors, customers and members of the press. Key personnel from Audio-Technica Japan (the parent company of A-T U.S. and the other A-T companies worldwide) were also in attendance, including Audio-Technica Corporation President Kazuo Matsushita.

The evening kicked off with a cocktail hour, followed by a Japanese Taiko drum performance and welcoming comments by Kazuo Matsushita. Audio-Technica U.S. President and CEO Philip Cajka then led a traditional sake barrel-breaking ceremony and toast. Sharing in the toast were onstage guests Ed Cherney (producer/engineer), Alan Parsons (artist/producer/engineer), and personnel from two of A-T’s first professional products dealers Skip Maggiora (Founder, Skip’s Music), and Jonathan and Susan Lipp (Owners, Full Compass Systems). The event then featured an all-star music revue produced by legendary GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer/producer Phil Ramone. The concert was hosted by emcee Dave Koz with the Gregg Field Big Band and featured guest performers Nikki Yanofsky, Mindi Abair, Siedah Garrett, Monica Mancini, Arturo Sandoval, Jim Brickman, BeBe Winans and Patti Austin. The night’s performances were a roaring success, with those in attendance applauding the show’s finale with a standing ovation while confetti filled the room to cap the celebration.

“This event is the kick-off of a year-long celebration of Audio-Technica’s ‘50 years of passionate listening,’ said Phil Cajka. “A-T’s ongoing commitment to the pursuit of worldwide audio excellence and innovation has changed the course of music history. We are so honored to be able to share this evening with A-T staff, artists, journalists and business associates – the extended A-T family, who has contributed so much to Audio-Technica’s success over the past 50 years.”
