ALVERNIA Studios Joins the KODAK Imagecare Program

Poland’s ALVERNIA Studios SP is the newest member of KODAK’s Imagecare Program, verifying that the laboratory meets the highest standards for camera negative processing, a Phase I accreditation. This is the first lab in Poland to be certified.

The KODAK Imagecare Program consists of 50 laboratory members in 30 countries. The worldwide processing standards set by Kodak provide assurances to filmmakers when they choose an Imagecare Program accredited laboratory, they know their work will be processed to the highest quality. The rigorous program substantiates that member labs adhere to standard practices, and full documentation of procedures and calibration. Kodak works very closely with laboratory personnel to assure that specified principles are met and maintained.

The ALVERNIA Studios laboratory has been in operation since 2010. It was established and created by Rados?aw Piotrowicz, an outstanding expert in the field of film processing. Ignacy Kalenkiewicz, operations manager for ALVERNIA, states, “We are very happy that our laboratory meets the high criteria of the KODAK Imagecare Program. Becoming a member confirms the world-class level and quality of our facility. Using the Program logo as certification for our services is very important to us, as the patronage of a market leader guarantees customers’ trust.”

“It’s clearly a win-win for both ALVERNIA and Kodak,” says Diane Carroll-Yacoby, worldwide manager of the KODAK Imagecare Program. “The Program helps in staff training and offers tools for lab personnel to become habitually quality conscious.”

Kodak assessor Odile Maugard comments, “The working conditions in the laboratory are excellent, and the procedures are well-scripted and strictly observed, according to the rules of the Program.”

The KODAK Imagecare Program is based on the fundamental principle of self-assessment, because each lab is in the best position to constantly monitor its own standards and to find, and to quickly correct, any deviations from the norm. Admittance is recognition that a laboratory has implemented the many structured procedures and checks required to meet the Program’s tough requirements.

“We’re delighted to welcome ALVERNIA Studios into the Kodak program,” adds Carroll-Yacoby. “Their film processing operations are really first-class, and we’re proud to accredit it as the first KODAK Imagecare Program Camera Negative Processing Laboratory in Poland.”

Cut&Paste Launches 12-City Global Design Competition – Call for Competitors Now Open

Cut&Paste, the global digital design competition known for its lively onstage battles and reputation-making performances, returns to 12 cities this year, this time with Adobe as the event’s Platinum Sponsor, Pond5 as their Gold Sponsor and Shapeways as their Silver Sponsor. This year’s competition, which has already made its way through riotous nights in NYC, Mexico City, and Seoul, is open immediately to potential competitors in the remaining tour cities.

All who consider themselves worthy are invited to apply for the city tournament of their choice at How to Compete, with work samples and a short statement. Check Cut&Paste’s website for all deadlines. Before each tournament, potential competitors can prove their mettle in one of several Qualifier events, at which designers can try the Cut&Paste format and meet the local team.

Each city will crown one champion in each of the three categories – 2D, 3D, and motion/ animation design – who will win a trip to New York in the fall for the third annual Cut&Paste Global Championship. Be sure to check out the winning entries from this year’s competitions in NYC and Mexico City to see what you’re up against. The three ultimate winners will team up with top global brands on one-time design projects. Past champs have worked with Converse, Shapeways, Nooka, and 55DSL, among other top brands.

Be forewarned – this is not a passive, submission-based contest. Competitors perform live, onstage, before big-name brands and a raucous audience fueled by bartenders, with a deejay cranking out music and an emcee narrating events. Cut&Paste expects competitors to put on a show not only onscreen, but onstage, bringing props, friends, social media tie-ins – anything they can to draw in the judges and audience and stamp their personal style on their work.

To prepare potential competitors for the intensity of the high-speed competition, Cut&Paste’s Platinum Sponsor, Adobe, has prepared a Training Room – a collection of little secrets they share alongside Adobe CS5 training videos that will help them haul ass onstage.

Judges – who will evaluate each design based upon, in order, adherence to the competition brief, strength of concept, originality, aesthetic and technique – will include Barbarian Group Co-Founder, Benjamin Palmer, Frog Design CD Michael DiTullo, Staple Design Founder/CD Jeff Staple, HUSH Partner David Schwarz, and many more.

Take a look at the NYC and Mexico City event recaps and screencasts to get an inside look at what Cut&Paste will be like when it hits your city. Competition is set for design hotspots around the globe, including London, Berlin, Helsinki, Tel Aviv, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Sao Paulo.

JVC ANNOUNCES LOWER PRICING FOR GY-HM710 PROHD CAMCORDER WITH FREE ANTON/BAUER POWER SYSTEM FOR LIMITED TIME

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced a new lower price on its GY-HM710 ProHD camcorder. Introduced earlier this year, the compact, shoulder-mount camcorder is ideal for ENG news, documentaries, event coverage, and educational applications. The company also announced the JVC Power Promotion, a limited time offer that includes a free Anton/Bauer power system package with the purchase of a new GY-HM710.

Introduced earlier this year, the GY-HM710 includes extensive image customization modes, JVC’s patented Focus Assist, and a 20-second Pre Rec (retro cache) feature, which continuously records and stores footage in cache memory and helps prevent missed shots of breaking events. Its new $5,995 list price includes the camera head with bayonet lens mount, viewfinder, microphone, Anton/Bauer battery plate, and Canon 14:1 ENG lens.

Customers who purchase a new GY-HM710 from an authorized JVC Professional reseller between now and the end of 2011 are eligible to receive an Anton/Bauer AB-DIONIC-PKG battery and power system package directly from JVC. Valued at $1,185, the package includes an Anton/Bauer DIONIC 90 Li-Ion battery, Tandem 70 InterActive charger, and AC power supply.

“The GY-HM710 delivers the same amazing image quality and efficient workflow of our ProHD product line, but eliminates the modular functionality that many customers don’t need,” said Craig Yanagi, national marketing and brand manager. “The result is a perfect balance between features and affordability, and the new pricing along with JVC’s Power Promotion makes it an even more attractive option for video professionals.”

With the same 3-CCD imaging system found in other ProHD models, the GY-HM710 records 1920×1080 HD footage in 1080p and 1080i at 25 Mbps or 35 Mbps. JVC’s native file recording technology allows recording in ready-to-edit file formats for Apple Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere (.MOV), as well as other major NLE systems (.MP4), to non-proprietary SDHC cards. For legacy applications, the camcorder can also record SD footage (480i) as standard DV files (.AVI or .MOV). Other features include a high resolution (1.22 million pixel) LCOS viewfinder and 4.3-inch flip-out LCD monitor, plus two XLR audio inputs with phantom power and manual audio level controls with audio meter.

The JVC Power Promotion ends Dec. 31.

Manhattan Edit Workshop Partners With AbelCine; Connects Production to Post

MANHATTAN EDIT WORKSHOP PARTNERS WITH ABELCINE; CONNECTS PRODUCTION TO POST
Educational developments teach filmmakers and videographers end-to-end production to post workflows and techniques

New York, New York – December 12, 2011 – Manhattan Edit Workshop (Mewshop), the cutting-edge authorized digital training destination, is pleased to announce a training partnership with industry leading film and digital media equipment supplier AbelCine. Their first collaboration, ‘Hands On: From the Camera to the Cutting Room,’ is a two-day intensive workshop in the art of shooting and editing narrative and documentary film.

“This partnership leverages the expertise of our respective training organizations to produce educational programs that approach training from the artistic workflow as opposed to teaching specific buttons and dials,” comments Josh Apter, Founder and President, Manhattan Edit Workshop. “I am very excited to get people working on all the latest tools and technology available to filmmakers, and using them for specific creative ends.”

“AbelCine Training was established to bring real-word education to industry professionals. We emphasize practical training taught by instructors who work everyday in the disciplines they teach. We are excited about the partnership with Manhattan Edit Workshop, because it allows us to offer our clients first-class instruction in editing techniques, which fits perfectly with our philosophy,” explained Andy Shipsides, AbelCine Training Department Manager and Camera Technology Specialist.

The first ‘Hands On: From the Camera to the Cutting Room’ workshop will be held on January 21st at AbelCine and January 22nd at Mewshop.

Day One takes place at AbelCine’s brand new training space. Award-winning cinematographer Peter Olsen and Mewshop founder and filmmaker Josh Apter deconstruct classic examples of three cinematic concepts – fiction, vérité and the interview – and take students through an immersive hands-on workshop in lighting, camera placement, composition and sound for these disciplines. Working with professional actors, state-of-the-art gear and award-winning instructors, the students break off into crews and shoot their own exercises.

Day Two takes place at Manhattan Edit Workshop where students take their footage through post-production using the industry’s most popular non-linear editing tools. Mewshop founder and filmmaker Josh Apter will walk through the post process where students will ingest, assemble, fine-tune and output work for a group screening and critique to end the class.

Students can register for the workshop on the Mewshop web site for 500.00 USD.

About the Instructors:
Instructor Josh Apter
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, instructor Josh Apter attended NYU’s Graduate Film Program, where his thesis, 53rd Calypso, was honored with the Martin Scorsese Award for achievement in directing. The film, which stars Edward Norton, received numerous awards for directing, editing, and cinematography at film festivals across the country.

Josh was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards for his first feature film, Kaaterskill Falls – The John Cassavetes Award and Best Debut Performance. Kaaterskill Falls was also awarded the Critic’s Jury Prize at the IFP/West Los Angeles Film Festival. It is currently screening on the Sundance Channel and is available on DVD through Wellspring Media.

In addition to establishing Manhattan Edit Workshop, the destination for post-production training, Josh has served as editor for more than eight feature films including The Holy Land (winner Slamdance 2002/Cavu Pictures Distributor), Kaaterskill Falls, and Barbecue is a Noun (Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Rome International Film Festival and the River Run Film Festival). To view more of Josh’s work, please visit www.peteandjoshmakemovies.com.

Instructor Peter Olsen

Production Award, and a nomination for the American Society of Cinematographers Greg Toland Heritage Award. Peter was also awarded a $25,000 development grant from IFP/North and the Minnesota Independent Film Fund as co-writer of the feature film screenplay Ice Nine, now in development.
Peter brings an invaluable distinction to the projects he shoots since he is also a writer, producer and director. His debut feature, Kaaterskill Falls (co-directed with Josh Apter), on which he also served as director of photography, received the Critic’s Jury Prize for Best Feature at the 2001 IFP/West Los Angeles Film Festival, and was nominated for two 2002 Independent Spirit Awards. Original Force Accelerates its Render Pipeline with PipelineFX’s Qube!

Original Force Accelerates its Render Pipeline with PipelineFX’s Qube!
One of the Fastest-growing 3D Animation Outsourcing Companies in China Streamlines Production Pipeline Using Intelligent Render Management Software and Full Service Company

Hong Kong, SIGGRAPH ASIA, Dec. 12, 2011, Rendering is always the most expensive part of any production. That is why savvy and expanding Chinese 3D animation outsourcing company, Original Force, chose the top full service render farm management company, PipelineFX, and their software, Qube!™, to organize and optimize their rapidly growing rendering pipeline.

With over 700 full-time employees, multiple sites throughout China and a renowned client base that includes Dreamworks, EA, Microsoft and THQ – Original Force has become one of the fastest growing animation outsourcing companies in China. This growth and the high level of client expectations that come with quality clientele have made the creation of a highly efficient production pipeline an absolute necessity. With rendering being a vital, albeit expensive part of the production puzzle, it became critical for Original Force to quickly find a rendering management solution that would create a more efficient pipeline that was also flexible enough to keep up with their tremendous growth.

For years, Original Force’s render management software had either been simple or free. It worked ok, but not great. As the complexity of their projects began to grow, Original Force found that simplistic rendering software couldn’t handle the needs of their workload. On top of this, Original Force was also using a lot of different software and technology at the same time. Programs such as 3ds Max, Maya, V-Ray, mental ray, and RealFlow were all part of their pipeline, and needed to be compatible with whatever solution they decided on. They found their answer in Qube!, a world class render farm management solution designed and supported by PipelineFX – a full service rendering company.

“We decided to look at Qube! since we knew it had been around the longest, and was being used by some of best production studios in world,” said Harley Zhao, CEO at Original Force. “We started out with a few licenses as a test; but once the results started rolling in, we could tell that we had made the right decision and implemented it across the company. The impact was huge. Qube! easily eclipsed our old rendering solutions, which saved us money, and gave us back a lot of time.”

Another big problem Original Force faced this year was how to efficiently manage the enormity of their render farm. Their farm consisted of more than 400 HP blades, and over 3000 cores. These CPUs needed to support different teams with different needs during the production process. If the farms were not managed efficiently, the firm would burn out a lot of money. With Qube! in place, this problem never materialized, as Qube! maximized Original Force’s CPU cores, memory and rendering software licenses. This alone proved to be a huge cost savings, since extra memory means extra time and more money to a creative production studio.

“It was really important to us that PipelineFX was a full service company that could provide comprehensive support and training. I am not quite sure how big of a team they have, but anytime we needed support, they were there to help. The success of our pipeline can now be attributed to PipelineFX and Qube! We are glad we chose PipelineFX as our partner for render farm management.”

PipelineFX will be demonstrating Qube! at SIGGRAPH ASIA on Tuesday December 13th and Wednesday the 14th from 9:30am to 6:00pm and Thursday the 15th from 9:30am to 5:00pm. PipelineFX can be found at booth D-14.
