Boris FX, the leading developer of integrated VFX and workflow technology for video and film, today announced that Boris Continuum Complete 8 AE (BCC 8 AE) is now available. BCC 8 AE delivers 200+ VFX filters to Macintosh and Windows versions of Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro CS5.5, CS5, and CS4. New flicker reduction and videoscope tools, OpenGL hardware acceleration, 32-bit float support, deeper After Effects integration, and enhanced lens flares, particles, glows, and lights headline this new release.

A whopping 200+ filters include 3D Objects such as Extruded Text, 3D particle effects, image restoration tools, lens flares and lights, keys and mattes, 3 Way Color Grading and other color correction tools, time-based effects such as Optical Stabilizer, warp and perspective effects, and blurs, glows, and cinematic effects. All filters take advantage of either multi-processing or OpenGL hardware acceleration for an interactive effects design experience.

Over 1,000 professionally-designed presets are included free with every installation of BCC. Customers can save and freely share their own presets and build customized preset collections tuned to the specific needs of a project – without the need for a costly subscription service. Both static and animated BCC presets are supported on the After Effects platform. Presets can be shared with matching BCC installations on any host application in which BCC is installed. In addition, via the Boris Transfer workflow utilities, BCC is the only plug-in collection that allows easy VFX migration between Adobe, Avid, and Apple video editing software – with parameters and keyframed information in-tact. Boris Transfer AE transfers Avid or Final Cut Pro sequences to After Effects while Boris Transfer FCP transfers sequences between Avid and Final Cut Pro.

Clay Paky Sharpys Make Their Mark on TV with the Debut of “The X Factor” and the MTV Video Music Awards Show

X Factor

X Factor

Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures are gaining in popularity for television production in the U.S. with extensive exposure on Simon Cowell’s new “The X Factor” music reality show for FOX and on the recent MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) telecast.

Already one of the most in-demand moving heads on the touring market – Sharpy is currently on tour with Usher, the Foo Fighters, Peter Gabriel, Keith Urban, Gretchen Wilson, Bruno Mars and others – Sharpy is now being recognized by the TV production community for its small footprint, fast response and bright, narrow beam, a hat trick of attributes that TV lighting designers look for in today’s moving fixtures.

The much-anticipated “X Factor,” whose franchise originated in the UK, marks the return of Simon Cowell who created the high-stakes singing competition’s format and is one of four judges who each mentor a finalist in a particular category while judging contestants in the other categories.

Lighting Designer Tom Kenny traveled with lighting director Brian Klunder and programmer Dirk Optende when the new show made talent stops across the country in Chicago, New York, Miami, Dallas and Seattle. Then they settled into LA’s Pasadena Theater for two weeks of production with four trucks of lighting gear from PRG.

Kenny was introduced to Clay Paky Sharpy moving heads in London and was eager to use them on “The X Factor.” “They are such a small unit and very easy to put anywhere,” which comes in handy with set designers and directors who don’t want to see lighting units on camera, he notes. But the small footprint of the Sharpy belies their power. “The output of the Sharpy surpasses any other light,” Kenny says. “I had them alongside 3K and 4K units, and they just cut right through.”

Sharpy is a 189W moving head with an unprecedented brightness usually achievable only with far greater wattages. Tipping the scales at just 16 kg, Sharpy produces a perfectly parallel, laser-like beam with an incredible output of 5,100 footcandles at 65 feet. Sharpy is also groundbreaking in the purity of its beam, which is sharply defined and free of any halo or discoloration around the edges. It offers an interchangeable color wheel with 14 fixed colors and an interchangeable gobo wheel with 17 fixed gobos, allowing users to change the shape of the beam and create an array of spectacular mid-air effects. Sharpy features new, high-performance electronics and can perform rapid and extensive pan-and-tilt movements.

For “The X Factor,” Kenny deployed 18 Sharpy fixtures on the floor and another 18 on the rig. “They provided this big, graphic, powerful, stadium look that the producers wanted,” he recalls. “The days for the live auditions were very long, but the Sharpys performed brilliantly – they would be on for 16 hours with no problems. Their focusability and shape were amazing. The judges were very impressed with the look of the show.”

Kenny was also impressed, and he decided to use Sharpy fixtures on the MTV Video Music Awards show, which aired live from LA’s Nokia Theatre on August 28.

“I had 6,000 bulbs on the VMAs this year, so the show had a lot of lumens,” he says. “VER purchased 40 custom-made platinum Sharpys that stood out against the white set. The compact size of the fixtures also helped with the low-profile lighting plan that production designer Florian Wieder and I came up with.”

Kenny notes that “the Sharpys cut through all the masses of lighting I had on the VMAs. They outshone most of the other lights with their sharp beams and great color. In fact, many of the artists and entourages commented on how gorgeous they were and how so much punch could come from the little platinum guy.” Kenny teamed with programmers Mike Appel and Dirk Optende on the awards telecast.

“I plan to use Sharpys on all my future shows – they are just great to work with,” says Kenny. “They punch through at any height, even without smoke.”

Headquartered in Seriate (Bergamo), Italy, Clay Paky SpA has a history of designing and manufacturing innovative professional show lighting. The company was founded in 1976 by entrepreneur Pasquale Quadri who anticipated the enormous impact the evolution of technology would have on the show and entertainment worlds.

Hitachi Introduces the CP-RX94 Ultra-Portable 3LCD Projector

CHULA VISTA, California, November 29, 2011 — Hitachi America, Ltd., Digital Media Division, Business Solutions Group today introduced its CP-RX94 3LCD projector. Weighing just five pounds and measuring 12 x 8.7 x 3 inches, the new CP-RX94 is ideal for business, educational and on-the-go applications and combines ease of operation with a host of useful features including HDMI connectivity.

The CP-RX94 includes Hitachi’s exclusive Intelligent Eco feature, which automatically changes the brightness of the lamp according to the brightness level of the image. The lamp becomes brighter when the input signal is high and dimmer when the input signal is low, saving lamp life and energy. The CP-RX94 delivers 2,600 ANSI lumens brightness with XGA resolution. Though highly compact, the CP-RX94 can project images up to 300 inches (diagonal measurement).

The Hitachi CP-RX94 provides a wealth of convenience features. Its exclusive Input Source Naming allows users to name their input sources as they choose, instead of being restricted to factory default settings. A Template function can project four different types of line templates that make it easier to write on a whiteboard. In addition, the projector’s Whiteboard Mode limits the peak white output when used with a whiteboard, to help reduce eyestrain.

Two customizable MyButton/MySource buttons on the remote control let users create shortcuts for any projector command. For connection to a document camera, MySource allows users to add a third Document Camera source button. The remote offers selectable IR frequency operation to avoid interference.

Additional features include a built-in speaker, closed captioning capability, a security sensor that recognizes when the projector has been moved and disables it until its PIN Lock code is entered and more. The CP-RX94 includes an HDMI® input, an RGB computer input, an RGB input/monitor output, S-Video and composite video inputs as well as RCA audio inputs and outputs. The CP-RX94 also has built-in front air exhaust, designed to direct warm air away from the audience.

WHTM-TV Completes Upgrade to Local HD News with JVC ProHD

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced that WHTM-TV, the ABC affiliate that serves Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, Penn. (DMA #41), has purchased 15 GY-HM790U and six GY-HM750U ProHD cameras for its transition to local HD news production.

WHTM-TV director of photojournalism Doug Watson shows off one of the station’s new JVC ProHD camcorders, which have been used in the field since June.

Allbritton Communications Company, which is based in Arlington, Va., recently standardized on JVC ProHD cameras for studio and ENG work at WHTM-TV and five of its affiliated stations. The new cameras are part of an overall transition to local HD news production for all stations in the group.

In May, WHTM-TV began using its new JVC cameras in the studio in SD mode, but transitioned to HD in October. The studio’s three GY-HM790Us are connected via fiber optic cable, which eliminates the need for triax and additional cable bundles.

Each camera is equipped with a CopperHead ProHD KA-F790 fiber optic transceiver, a custom module built by Telecast Fiber Systems that provides a direct connection to the camcorder (no external cables). “The fiber package is compact and well integrated,” said Keith Blaisdell, WHTM-TV director of technology. “Telecast has worked very hard to deliver a robust and reliable fiber solution with the CopperHead.”

Photojournalists began using ProHD camcorders in the field in June, then transitioned from SD to HD in September. “The cameras are simply amazing in their video reproduction. The colors are rich and the resolution is really superb,” Blaisdell said. “Most of all, the total package is both operator and engineer friendly.”

Blaisell said JVC’s native file recording on non-proprietary SDHC cards has been a “perfect match” for the station’s Adobe Premiere NLE workflow. “We made the transition from legacy Digital Betacam tape to nonlinear workflow all at once,” he added. “JVC’s native file recording has worked seamlessly with Adobe Premiere to deliver stunning HD pictures.”

WHTM-TV photojournalist Eric Heisler displays one of the station’s new JVC ProHD camcorders.

The GY-HM750U delivers outstanding 1920×1080 images in a lightweight, shoulder-mount form factor. It records at selectable data rates up to 35 Mbps and can record HD footage in 720p, 1080p, and 1080i, as well as SD footage (480i). Building on the modular approach of the flagship GY-HM790U, it includes a 68-pin chassis connector that creates a clean, direct interface with various modules – no external cables needed. Plus, a new feature allows simultaneous recording to both SDHC cards for instant backup or client copy.
