Nice Shoes Teams Up with The Vault to Strike with Energetic Under Armour Spot

Following an award-winning collaboration on an ESPN/Sony spot, Nice Shoes has once again teamed up with The Vault, this time to add VFX and color to a visually explosive Under Armour spot. The Nice Shoes team, led by Colorist Lenny Mastrandrea and Creative Director Aron Baxter, created a unique look for the spot, which promoted Under Armour’s Charged Cotton line at Dick’s Sporting Goods stores.

Charged Cotton opens on a tractor-trailer backed into a nighttime Dick’s parking lot, with steady lightning flashes menacing the sky overhead. A pair of Dick’s workers emerges and stares in awe as the semi trailer opens to a burst of blinding light, releasing a mob of Under Armour-clad athletes. The group pours into the store, leaping and dodging the racks of clothing as a living lightning-bolt pattern ripples across their bodies and through the air around them.

Norfolk State University Installs Three Hitachi HD Cameras in its Studio for Student-Produced Programming

WOODBURY, NEW YORK– Norfolk State University (NSU), in Norfolk, VA, installed three new Hitachi SK-HD1000 digital high definition cameras in its television studio, which provides hands-on training to students enrolled in the school’s Mass Communication program. The studio, which is part of NSU’s School of Liberal Arts, enables students to satisfy media lab requirements and produce their own videos as they work toward a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication.

“Since our students have different levels of technical proficiency, it was critical for us to choose cameras that are extremely easy to operate, maneuver, and maintain,” said Michael Matovich, CBT (Certified Broadcast Technologist) and chief video engineer for NSU. “The Hitachi SK-HD1000 is all of those things, plus it produces a fantastic picture. As a state university, all major purchases must go out to bid. The Hitachi SK-HD1000 demonstrated more

Award-Winning “Catskills Hotel” Documentary Leverages Grass Valley’s EDIUS NLE

Grass Valley EDIUS HD nonlinear editing software

Grass Valley EDIUS HD nonlinear editing software

The latest version of EDIUS® (6.0) HD nonlinear editing software from Grass Valley™ was used extensively to cut the feature-length documentary “The Catskill Mountain House and The World Around‚” which won a Gold Remi award at the 44th Annual WorldFest Houston International Film Festival in March. The prestigious Remi Award is named after famed sculptor Frederick Remington and was given to Tobe Carey, producer/director at Willow Mixed Media, a not-for-profit arts group located near Woodstock, NY, and the man chiefly responsible for the project.

“The Catskill Mountain House and The World Around” tells the story of America’s first great mountain-top hotel, romantic tourism, and cutthroat competition in New York’s Northern Catskills. For 140 years, from 1823 to 1963, the Catskill Mountain House stood atop the Catskill High Peaks as a symbol of the Gilded Age. Beginning in the 1850′s, The Laurel House, The Hotel Kaaterskill, The Overlook Mountain House, and The Grand Hotel also became world famous vacation spots, attracting world famous business tycoons, artists, and Presidents.

The story of the rise and fall of the Catskill Mountain House is a compelling tale of steamboat and railroad empires, bitter rivalries, exclusive private preserves, fabulous art, and picturesque landmarks that celebrated the Catskills as part of the American “Grand Tour” and as America’s “First Wilderness.”

Carey used EDIUS software and all of its real-time, built-in workflow tools to shape the captivating feature and prepare it for output to DVD and final distribution. The documentary includes a great deal of material from different sources in different formats. These could all be combined on the EDIUS timeline during the editing process.

“EDIUS was my bedrock in dealing with many hours of interviews with historians as well as organizing the hundreds of images, vintage art, 19th century music, and period films from the Library of Congress,” said Tobe Carey, producer/director at Willow Mixed Media. “The software’s strong and reliable workflow made it easy to shape the film and deal with the many changes that editing a documentary always requires.”

Carey, who specializes in documentaries and art projects, and whose work has also appeared on “60 Minutes,” “CBS Sunday Morning,” and ABC’s “20/20” newsmagazine show, has used EDIUS nonlinear editing since its introduction. The variety of documentaries he has produced—including numerous festival showings and industry awards—reflects an attention to detail that could only be supported by EDIUS’s real-time performance and effects. This makes it easy to create multiple versions of an editing project when required.

“The Catskill Mountain House and The World Around” premiered in October 2010 and is in wide distribution on DVD. An online trailer is available at
