Gearhouse South Africa supplied full technical production to the 2010 Loerie Awards staged at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town, South Africa for the second year running.
The event was again produced by H-Factor, with a production and set design by H-Factor and The Loerie Awards Committee, to celebrate the coolest and most innovative creative talent in advertising, communication design and experiential media from Africa and the Middle East. more

“Rose”, a son et lumière collaboration between projection artist Ross Ashton and sound artist Karen Monid, was the main centrepiece of the 2010 Illuminating York festival of light. It alone drew in an incredible 65,000 people to York city centre to enjoy the show over 4 days, running for 3 hours each evening in a continuous loop.
Ashton and Monid were commissioned to produce this latest work following their very successful “Accendo” for the 2008 Illuminating York event, which lit the facades of the Yorkshire Museum and Abbey Ruins in York’s Museum Gardens. more

Sound Mixer Joe Foglia Turns To Several Sound Devices Products on Set

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Renowned production sound mixer Joe Foglia has been relying on Sound Devices (AES Booth 1031) and its digital recorders, mixers and accessory products while working on-set of ABC’s Castle, to capture the main characters’ witty banter as they work together to solve some of New York City’s most puzzling murders. Castle chronicles Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), a mystery novelist who has begun shadowing every move of NYPD detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), an aggressive officer who keeps her investigations under tight rein, and her feathers are ruffled by Castle’s presence. Amid incessant sexual tension and constant close talking, in which Sound Devices is most notably used, this flirtatiously-charged duo builds on their mixed-up relationship as they look to solve strange homicides in New York.

With a Sound Devices 788T and 744T in tow, amongst other digital recorders, and its 552 Production Mixer and CL-8 Controller, the company’s products are called upon to accurately portray and record the duo’s dialog. Foglia uses a variety of rigs on-set ― Package A for everyday use, which includes Sound Devices 788T and another mixer, and Package B for second unit and splinter set-up’s for when the crew breaks off from the main unit for simultaneous recording. Package B consists of Sound Devices 744T, an additional mixer and its 552 Production Mixer. Foglia also has a separate on-location rig, as the main equipment rig is designed specifically for on-set production and is too large and cumbersome for field recording. The on-location rig includes Sound Devices 788T and its CL-8 Controller. In these cases Foglia simply attaches the CL-8 to the 788T and with an over the shoulder ENG bag he has everything he needs to capture the dialog in the field. more

A&E Networks announced the upcoming launch of the real life series “The Hasselhoffs� to an appreciative audience with a series of promos that launched during “The Roast of David Hasselhoff� on Comedy Central. The objective was to create a pair of :15 second teases that leveraged the Hasselhoff zeitgeist and played off the over-the-top, theatrical nature of The Hoff – the most awesome man in show biz. Zoic Studios acted as end-to-end creative agency for the teases, providing writing, production, sound design, and all post. Key to the spots was building excitement around the event, striking a balance between self-deprecating humor and reality, with the core message “Awesome Has A New Home.�

Working via Colenso BBDO Auckland, FEEDTHEWALRUS Editor Adam Jenkins recently put together an epic mini-film for The Glue Society which crafts the tale of New Zealand’s DB Export Beer.

Shot black-and-white, this classic and contemporary film tells the true story: in the 1950s, New Zealand’s misguided Finance Minister, Arnold Nordmeyer, installed an oppressive tax on imported beer, shutting out the proletariat that had accounted for the majority of the beverage’s sales. The suits and bureaucrats took over the bars, shutting out the working man. Then a hero emerged, Morton Coutts, who revolutionized the science of brewing beer. In setting out to work around the tax, he brewed a perfect, non-taxable export quality brew for the working man; DB Export Beer was born.

The skeptical blue-collar heroes swarmed the bars before erupting in celebration at the first chug, realizing that their carousing days were back.
