Former SPI and Weta Digital producer to serve as Head of Production.
ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA—Rising Sun Pictures has completed a global search for a top-line executive to join its rapidly expanding business in the role of Head of Production. Successful candidate Albert Mason, previously of Sony Pictures Imageworks and Weta Digital, brings to his new role substantial experience in managing large production teams on high profile pics such as Spider Man 3, Hancock, Ghost Rider, Polar Express and The Lord of the Rings.
Mason’s appointment is another milestone in Rising Sun’s strategy to cement its leading position in the Australian visual effects landscape, and to gain international recognition as one of a handful of vendors capable of delivering large volume, highly complex visual effects work.
Mason said that he believes his experience in working for some of the industry’s largest visual effects companies will benefit RSP with its expansion plans. “I was excited to work with Rising Sun because of the quality of its work, and when I met the people, it doubled my enthusiasm—this company has great talent, Mason said. “To be able to use my skills and experience to help them position as a top ten company is a fantastic opportunity.
“Albert has come on board at an exciting time, said Rising Sun Pictures CEO Michael Taylor. “Our work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is some of the most elaborate effects and character work undertaken by the company to date and will surely be a launching pad into more cutting edge challenges. The influx of highly skilled talent relocating to Adelaide from London and California for the long term shows that Rising Sun has come of age and is ready for big things to come.
Mason spent seven years at Sony Pictures Imageworks, Culver City, and also helped to establish SPI’s production facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also spent three years at Weta Digital in Wellington, New Zealand, and served as its Digital Production Manager during the production of the “Lord of the Rings films. He began his career with MTV Networks.
