Production company Mothership announced today that director Aladino Debert has joined its roster. Mothership operates as a sister company to Digital Domain. When Nice Shoes began work on a series of financially challenged independent films last year, they approached the projects in a unique way: as creative partners fiscally invested in the films’ success as executive producers. Rather than agreeing to take on any available project, Nice Shoes CFO/COO Julia Kisla would identify promising films and negotiate a revenue-sharing agreement, essentially trading their creative services for a share of profits at a later date. The process proved so successful that Nice Shoes – which continues to focus primarily on high-end, big-budget projects done under more traditional contracts – has now created an exciting, new revenue stream. more

Bent Image Lab’s unique CG animation for “The Right Blend,” TRIS3CT’s spot for Scott Naturals paper products, has attracted quite a bit of attention in recent months.

Created at BENT’s Portland studio, the :30 commercial consists of one continuous camera shot that takes audiences through an animated world seemingly made of hundreds of layers of paper towel. These distinctive visuals have won recognition from advertising and animation professionals alike, earning it two Silver Telly Awards and acceptance to high-profile festivals such as the Annecy International Animation Festival.

The spot’s style is based on a paper cutout animation technique called Stratastencil, explained Nando Costa and David Daniels, who co-directed the spot at BENT.
