Until recently, hacking motion-capture software was best the left to the large studios and other users who could devote the necessary coders to the job. Now, after three years of development, Vicon offers a more flexible solution with the debut of Blade, a new customizable Windows-based motion-capture processing software that is said to more or less offer a one-size-fits-all approach to the complex task of handling motion-capture data.

Blade is said to be as easy to use for a small studio with a single camera as for a studio the size of Sony Pictures Imageworks (a customer). The Sonys of the world can dig deep and tweak as needed; less-sophisticated users get a wizards approach that walks them through actor setup, acquisition, solving, occlusion cleanup, and general data wrangling. www.vicon.com
