My Post House: Copper Post
Copper Post''s owner/senior editor Rob Beadle and his talented team of editors, designers, animators and colorists live for the artistic challenge. Since its founding in 2002, the Phoenix, AZ, post house has completed a number of nationally recognized, award-winning projects.
What specific projects do you currently have in the works?
It''s a busy time at Copper Post. In addition to all of the normal “bread and butter” commercial and corporate projects we do, we are also in the process of completing our fourth feature film, “Queens of Country,” starring Lizzy Caplan, Ron Livingston, Joe Lo Trulio, Matt Walsh and Maynard James Keenan. The film was written and directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke, and shot on the RED One with the MX sensors. Copper Post is responsible for all aspects of the film''s post production, from dailies and offline editing, to visual effects and color grading. I''ve served as post production supervisor and offline editor for the project.
Our Copper Post team had the same role on “Blood Into Wine” (www.bloodintowine.com), a feature length documentary that premiered last February and screened in select theatres across the country for several months.
We also designed and authored the DVD and Blu-Ray for “Blood Into Wine.” We have been fortunate to balance our work in original content with a steady stream of agency commercial work for clients like Barbasol, Cable One, Blue Diamond Almonds, the Arizona and Scottsdale Offices of Tourism, and AAA. We''ve also teamed up with our sister production company, True Story Films, to produce many client-direct marketing projects for clients like Arizona State University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and JW Marriott.
What gets you out of bed in the morning to go to work in post-production?
Sleep? You know you're asking about post right?
What is your favorite thing about working in post?
My favorite thing about working in post is being the last one to touch a project. It''s a great feeling when you''re the final stop in a creative process that stated with a “concept” or a few notes on a piece of paper. I enjoy bringing everyone''s creative ideas together and giving a project the final polish it needs to look amazing on screen.
What is your least favorite thing about working in post?
Ironically, my least favorite thing about post is also “being the last one to touch a project!” By the time something gets to me, the deadline is coming fast. Deadlines don''t move, but knowing we''ll be proud of the finished piece makes the long (really, really long) days worth it.
What were you doing 10 years ago?
Ten years ago? I was working as a lead Smoke Artist for a production company and trying to figure out how I could possibility start my own one day. Desktop DVD authoring and building was relatively new at the time, so my colleague Cary Truelick and I decided to pool our resources and purchase the software and hardware required to start building DVDs for a handful of clients. That small side business grew quickly and, less than a year later, Copper Post was born. The year after that, we opened True Story Films, a full-service production company.
What do you expect to be doing 10 years from now?
And, 10 years from now? Well, we are working hard to help Phoenix become a community that can support original content projects on a broader scale. Thanks to our strong relationships with LA-based production companies and the close proximity of our two cities (flights are less than one hour), we''re able to work as an extension of the LA film/television market. So, hopefully, in 10 years we''ll be basically doing the same thing, but on a much bigger scale — producing high-end work for a diverse set of national clients and original content producers, including ourselves.
What was the first editing system you worked on?
I got my first taste of editing while in high school using VHS. From there, I moved onto Avid in college and, from there, I started working with Smoke and Final Cut Pro.
What new technology are you working with?
We''ve been an Apple/Final Cut Pro shop since 2002. In recent years, as our company has grown, we''ve been able to afford bigger and better tools to do the job. Our latest addition? Blackmagic Design''s DaVinci Resolve for Mac and the control surface to go with it. The speed of the hardware/software allows us to work at amazing speeds comparatively, especially with the newest release of Resolve 7.1. We are able to run a Red Rocket card and multiple GPUs, which was once only available for Linux systems.
