As a mature capture medium, film just doesn't get much better. Until it does, of course. Kodak, for example, keeps at it, upgrading its remarkable Vision2 family and even shipping a new Super 8 film last summer, the richly saturated Ektachrome 64T.
Scanner development keeps pace too. At IBC 2005, Imagica introduced the Imager XE Advanced Plus, the latest member of its established Imager XE product line. Providing a good bump in input capability — owners of the prior model Imager XE Advanced can upgrade — the Plus now delivers 4K 35mm film scans at 1.9 seconds per frame, or 2K scans at only 1.3 seconds per frame.
The pin-registered Advanced Plus version is flexible, supporting scans of full-frame 4perf. 35mm at 4096×3112 pixels and 8perf. 35mm (VistaVision) at 6144×4096 pixels. Options include 35mm 3perf./8perf., 16mm/Super 16mm, liquid gate, and Keykode. Output over Gigabit Ethernet includes Cineon (FIDO) 10-bit log, DPX 10-bit log, TIFF 16-bit linear, SGI 16-bit linear, TIFF 8-bit linear, and SGI 8-bit linear. www.ise.imagica.co.jp/imager
