Sept. 11 Video Heroes to be Honored at GV Expo

The editors of Government Video and Videography magazines will honorfour videographers that distinguished themselves with their effortsfollowing the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Three UnitedStates Air Force videographers who shot the video in the moments afterthe Pentagon attack, as well as a New York City Police Departmentvideographer who died while covering the World Trade Center attack, arethe unanimous choices to receive the 2001 Government Video StarAward.

Tech. Sgt. Robert Stenberg, Videographer, 11th CommunicationSquadron, U.S. Air Force, was the lead videographer at the Pentagon onthe morning of September 11, 2001. He will be honored with Tech. Sgt.Thomas Szestowicki, Aerial Videographer, and Staff Sgt. David Barlow,Videographer, both members of the 1st Combat Camera Squadron, U.S. AirForce, stationed at Charleston Air Force Base in Charleston, SC.

The fourth award will be presented posthumously to Glen Pettit, whoworked with the New York Police Department Commissioner's office videounit. He was videotaping the destruction at the World Trade Center andwas lost when the second tower collapsed. The 30-year-old officer alsoserved as a volunteer firefighter with two fire departments.

The four videographers will be honored prior to the keynotepresentation at the fourth annual Government Video Technology Expo 2001(GV Expo 2001) Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Washington DCConvention Center.

Stenberg was the first videographer at the scene less than fiveminutes after the hijacked Boeing 757 airplane crashed into southwestarea of the Pentagon. He continued to shoot despite repeated warningsthat more hijackers might be on the way. According to his supervisor,Darlene Brown, Chief, Television, 11th Communication Squadron,

Stenberg's bravery in the face of a national disaster came from amilitary training and his need to get the story. Stenberg will describehis September 11th experience and show his post-attack footage for thefirst time at a public gathering - the same video virtually every majornews outlet and the world aired following the attack. During the awardsceremony, he will be joined by colleagues and dignitaries from thePentagon.
