Video Network Engineers in the Streaming Media, Video and TVTechnologies department of Computing & Communications support theongoing production and distribution of television programming, campusCATV, FM radio, streaming media efforts and related infrastructure ofthe department. This is a full-time, permanent position and will reportdirectly to the Engineering Director for Streaming Media, Video, and TVTechnologies.

This position independently carries out needs assessment, design,construction and maintenance of systems and services such as videoproduction and post-production facilities, microwave communicationsystems, CATV systems, satellite links, broadcast transmission, two-wayradio systems, campus communication infrastructure, some electroniccircuit design, and new construction of emerging technologies. TheVideo Network Engineer works at a very high technical andresponsibility level, directly performing complex tasks in support ofthe engineering needs of a nationally televised channel withpost-production facilities and multiple distribution methods. Theposition works closely with the streaming team to integrate broadcastand IT. The engineer must interact effectively with a broad range ofpeople in all units of C&C and a client community consisting offaculty and staff and various vendors. The engineer must be able todesign systems and procedures to manage complex video and RFdistribution systems.

Specific Job Responsibilities and Functions:

  • Design, manage, and improve the operations of the University’snationally distributed television channel, UWTV. Provide complexproblem determination and resolution for escalated technical problemsthat occur.

  • Develop and implement pro-active preventative maintenance proceduresto avoid problems.

  • Work with vendors to integrate new technologies into existingsystems to ensure continued operations.

  • Provide specifications; provide program design and implementation ofcomplex hardware and software.

  • Provide training and consultation to other engineers, broadcasttechnicians, operators, and production personnel both inside andoutside the organization to maximize features of various systems.

  • Support, maintain, and operate satellite uplink facilities.

  • Create, monitor, document and communicate project plans and ongoingstatus.

  • Work individually or as part of a team.

  • Work as team member to integrate and demonstrate new distributiontechnologies.

  • Participate in rotating on-call support, which may require extraworking hours.

Requirements:

  • Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in E.E. or related field or four years ofequivalent training in television engineering and four years of workexperience in television technology.

  • Experience should include cable TV and satellite, microwave anddigital video technologies. IP networking knowledge required.

Additional Requirements:


  • Experience in engineering support for television broadcastfacilities.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with television test equipment, microwavecommunications, and experience in planning and operating satellitetelevision equipment.

  • Ability to create, read, and interpret engineering drawing andelectrical and electronics schematics.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired:

  • Candidates with seven or more years of experience will be givenpreference.

  • Familiarity with HTML content management systems, MS Visio, WindowsMedia, and QuickTime a plus.

  • Experience in streaming media preferred.

Condition of Employment:

  • Must be able to, in a timely fashion, transport equipment to remotelocations using a state vehicle which requires a valid driver’slicense recognized by the State of Washington.

  • Work may require access to confined spaces and heights, for examplein utility tunnels, on building roofs, under equipment, and insideequipment racks.

  • Employees must use approved safety procedures.

  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.

  • Must be available for rotating on-call support, which may requirework outside of normal business hours.

  • A satisfactory outcome to a criminal history verification may berequired prior to hire.
