The James D. Phelan Art Award in Video 2002 Winners

The Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) is pleased to announce therecipients of the James D. Phelan Art Award in Video: Torsten ZenasBurns and Douglas Rosenberg. The Phelan Art Award in Video honorsCalifornia-born artists whose body of work merits recognition for itscreativity, innovation, and contribution to the language of video. Thewinners of the Phelan Art Award in Video and the Phelan Art Award inFilm (administered by the Film Arts Foundation) will be honored at apublic screening and reception November 23 from 6-8 p.m. at the SanFrancisco Art Institute at 800 Chestnut Street in San Francisco. Theevent is free to the public.

The Phelan Art Award in Video is sponsored by The San FranciscoFoundation and is funded by the James D. Phelan Trust. The videocompetition is administered by BAVC.

Torsten Burns is a video artist whose work has been screenednationally and internationally. He received an MFA in video andperformance from the San Francisco Art Insitute. His recent workincludes Exchange Program: Galactica/Lifespace, a "fusionbetween sculptural bodies and space-time bodies. ..." He has done anumber of collaborations, including ones with Anthony Dicenza under thename Halflifers, and with media artist Darrin Martin.

Douglas Rosenberg is a video artist who has become internationallyknown for his work at the intersection of dance/performance and video.He received and MFA in performance/video from the San Francisco ArtInstitute. His recent work includes single channel tapes, videoinstallations, and video performances, as well as collaborations withcontemporary choreographers, including Molissa Fenley, Eiko and Koma,Sean Curran, Ellen Bromberg, and Li Chiao-Ping. His work has beenfunded by the NEA, The Soros Foundation, and others, and recent showsinclude Mostra de Video Dansa de Barcelona, Spain; Moving PicturesFestival, Toronto; The Video Place, London; and THINK FILM, BrooklynMuseum of Art.
