Tandberg First to Market with Wireless Videoconferencing
Oslo, Norway - October 11, 2001 - Tandberg, a global leader invideoconferencing, today announced the first videoconferencing productcapable of running on wireless LAN. With the increasing popularity ofwireless LANs, users have expressed the need for a videoconferencingproduct compatible with this type of network. The Tandberg 1000 is acompletely integrated system with an LCD screen and multiple networkinterfaces including IP, ISDN, and now wireless LAN. The compact sizeof the Tandberg 1000 makes it highly portable and therefore uniquelysuited for use on a wireless LAN.
"Tandberg sees a tremendous opportunity for wirelessvideoconferencing products due to the rapid deployment of wireless LANtechnology on a global basis," said Bengt Thuresson, president and CEOof Tandberg. "We expect the product to find widespread acceptance incompanies already using LAN technology, and it may be a 'killerapplication' that makes companies choose wireless technology as theyevaluate their networking needs. We are excited to once again be thefirst to bring industry leading technology to market, as we continueour tradition of advancing state-of-the-art videoconferencingsolutions."
Wireless videoconferencing will dominate several main applicationareas - primarily the small room, executive office, and shared officeenvironments. With the streamlined, integrated approach of the Tandberg1000, only a single cable is required - for power. This ensures thatthe Tandberg 1000 wireless product will maintain and enhance the styleand order prevalent in many executive offices. The simple cablingrequirements of this product make it well suited as a shared officetool to be borrowed and used in any available office space with awireless LAN. This provides all employees easy access tovideoconferencing and allows for flexibility of use and ad hocmeetings. In addition, many companies have introduced a "hot desking"office environment whereby employees have no fixed workspace bututilize whichever workstation is available. With the introduction ofthe Tandberg 1000 on wireless LAN, they can now move theirvideoconferencing units as easily as they move their laptop computersand document holders. Companies not currently using wireless LAN butchoosing the Tandberg 1000 will benefit from the system's multiplenetwork interfaces and will not have to invest in new videoconferencingequipment when they switch to this type of network.
"The Tandberg 1000 is one of the sleekest videoconferencing productsaround, and the wireless LAN support gives the product a uniquecapability that fits well with its main market thrust - small meetingrooms, executive offices and portable situations," states Andrew W.Davis, managing partner at Wainhouse Research. "Tandberg continues itsstrong innovative streak."
Wireless LANs provide all the functionality of wired LANs, withoutthe physical constraints of the wire itself. Using radio frequencytechnology, wireless LANs receive data over the air, minimizing theneed for wired connections. Wireless LANs are ideal solutions forcompanies who are trying to avoid the huge infrastructure and costsassociated with a wired LAN or for expanding companies who need theflexibility of being able to extend their networks rapidly and ascost-effectively as possible. The cost of installing and maintaining awireless LAN is generally lower than the cost of installing andmaintaining a traditional wired LAN because a wireless LAN limits theamount of cabling and the labor associated with installation andreparation.
The Tandberg 1000 runs on wireless LAN compatible with the IEEE802.11b standard. In order for the Tandberg 1000 to operate in awireless LAN environment, all that is required is a PC card (PMCIA)that can be fitted into a slot on top of the unit. The cards currentlysupported are the Compaq WL110 and the Lucent OrinocoPC24E-H-(ET/FC/FR/JP). These can be purchased from a PC equipmentprovider. The card interacts with wireless LAN access points that mayessentially be mounted anywhere -- within 1,000 feet -- as long as thedesired coverage is obtained. In addition, Tandberg has ensured securenetwork connection with advanced encryption.
Availability
Tandberg will demonstrate the Tandberg 1000 with the wireless LANcapability for the first time at TeleCon 2001 in Anaheim, Calif. onOctober 23, 2001. The product will also be available for purchase fromthat date. The price of the unit will start at $5,490, which is theexisting price for the Tandberg 1000.
