Roderick Snell Wins John Tucker Award

Amsterdam, Sept. 26, 2001 -- Snell & Wilcox founder and chairmanRoderick Snell was presented with the prestigious John TuckerInternational Award for Excellence at the International BroadcastingConvention in Amsterdam.

The award -- IBC's premier honor -- was presented to Snell by itsnamesake, John Tucker. It was given for Snell's "…lifetime workin breaking down the barriers due to the different standards fortelevision and helping the world's broadcasting community tocommunicate with itself."

Snell's career as a pioneer in television, teacher, author,broadcast engineer, inventor, and manufacturer spans more than 40years. With his partner Joe Wilcox, he founded Snell & Wilcox in1973 with an initial view to provide cost-effective televisionstandards conversion for more impoverished areas of the developingworld. Snell & Wilcox now has more than 500 employees.

When presenting the award, John Tucker said: "Roderick is part of abreed of men we feared might have disappeared. He is a gentleman and ascholar. Apart from his considerable technical achievements, he hasmany human ones. In particular, he personally created the kind ofenvironment at his company where excellence can flourish."

Snell is a member of a number of key broadcast industry committeesand has been awarded fellowships of both the Society of Motion Pictureand Television Engineers and of the Royal Television Society. He isalso a visiting Professor at Kingston University, Surrey, UK.

Editors Note: The IBC John Tucker Award is presented annually duringIBC in recognition of an internationally significant contribution by anindividual or group of persons to any aspect of broadcasting, research,design, development, manufacture, operational practice, or nagement.The IBC Award was instituted in 1984 to mark the 10th InternationalBroadcasting Convention and was renamed The IBC John Tucker Award in1992 in recognition of the past chairman's services to IBC. Nominationscan be made by anyone, and then a short list is drawn up by an awardpanel. The winner is decided by votes cast by members of the IBCCouncil, which was created to help IBC match the evolving needs of themedia industry. Its members are composed of senior executives andvisionaries drawn from different parts of the world, including Europe,Japan, Middle and Far East, North and South America, andAustralasia.
