Coordinator of Classroom Support Services/SeniorElectronic Engineer
Organization: The Office of Instructional Services (OIS) atColorado State University is a professionally-staffed University-wideorganization responsible for providing solutions to instructional andother information transfer problems and professional developmentservices for all faculty, staff, and graduate teaching/researchassistants in support of the University’s general mission ofteaching, research, and service. OIS includes direct classroom support,distance education technology, video production, computer-basedgraphics, instructional design, multimedia development, andphotography, with a staff of 35 full-time professionals andapproximately 20 student employees. Position: As Coordinator of Classroom Support Services/SeniorElectronic Engineer, the person in this position functions in twocrucial capacities. First, the position functions as the primarytechnical engineer and principal consultant involved in design of allinstructional technology development and delivery systems,technology-supported (SMART) classrooms, and distance educationsupport, and acts as the campus-wide leader in analog andstate-of-the-art digital video systems including MPEG compression andDVD authoring systems, broadband analog and IP distribution, IP-basedinteractive video systems (H.323) and ISDN (H.320) video conferencing,microwave ITFS (digital and traditional FM) and modern mobile PCSsystems. Second, the position functions as the manager of ClassroomSupport Services (CSS) and its subsidiary units (Classroom EquipmentServices, Classroom Media Services, and Classroom Technical Services),which provide direct support to all campus instructional activities,instructional technology capabilities and traditional means ofaudiovisual support through student and professional staff. This personis involved in a variety of teams and committees working to build theinstructional technology infrastructure of the University. The positionworks with faculty, staff, and other OIS managers to enhance theessential service function of the unit.

Typical Activities:

As the University’s primary video and instructionaltechnology/distance education technology engineer, consults with campusdepartments regarding equipment needs and analyzes and/or designsinstructional technology proposals for resident instruction support anddistance education applications.

Works with other OIS unit coordinators to ensure appropriatetechnical support is in place for Graphic Services, InstructionalDesign & Technology, Photographic Services, Video ProductionServices, and the technology-supported distance education (CSUN)program. Coordinates with the OIS Network Manager to ensure standardscompliance in the development of unit-wide digital storage andoperating systems for video servers, video operations and archiving.Works cooperatively with Academic Computing & Networking Services(ACNS), University Libraries, and other University organizations toestablish University information and instructional technology standardsand ensure OIS compliance with those standards.

With the Director of OIS, is integrally involved in allinstructional and media facility strategic planning. Provides projectleadership, design and coordination with University FacilitiesManagement, Telecommunications, and ACNS to ensure timely and propercompletion of campus construction and improvement projects.

Fosters positive relationships with other University planners andfaculty in support of information and instructional technologydevelopment. Participates in state/regional-wide planning initiativesrelated to technology issues in digital video distribution and emergingtechnologies.

Has both leadership and hands-on responsibilities in the design,development and construction of technology-supported classrooms.Incorporates faculty input, information from a variety of professionalsources as a part of this process. The position works closely withvendors, the Purchasing Department, and installers as appropriate.Oversees faculty training in the use of SMART classrooms.

Supervises 10 professional staff and approximately 6 hourlyemployees. Writes position descriptions, coordinates work schedules andresponsibilities with leadworkers, conducts annual performanceevaluations, and with the Director is responsible for hiring anddisciplinary procedures of CSS.

Establishes procedures to support the missions of ClassroomEquipment Services, Classroom Media Services, and Classroom TechnicalServices. Interacts with faculty clients. Meets regularly withleadworkers and staff to address and respond to faculty’sclassroom concerns and equipment needs.

Serves as a member of and technical advisor to the Classroom ReviewBoard which provides oversight of over 150 general assignmentclassrooms.

To be considered, candidates must have an appropriatetechnology-based foundation acquired and developed through acombination of experience and/or formal education:

A minimum of 5 years directly-related professional work experienceincluding system design in a technology environment.

The ability to develop and implement a vision for atechnology-in-instruction environment, and provide leadership.
-
Documented experience in staff management.
-
Well-developed communication skills.
-
Demonstrated ability to work successfully with individuals which mayinclude: faculty and staff involved in both technical and creativeareas; vendors; clients or other end-users.

Related college-level education.

Additional directly-related professional work experience beyond the5-year minimum stated above.
This is an Administrative-Professional position, which reports tothe Director, Office of Instructional Services. The minimum salary is$75,000 plus benefits, and is negotiable depending upon experience.
