World-class Cinematographers Featured in Keynotes and Panels at Entertainment Technology World

LOS ANGELES—-The International Cinematographers Guild (ICG)and American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) will present 14 keynoteaddresses and panel discussions live at the Entertainment TechnologyWorld Conference on June 27-28, 2003, at the Los Angeles ConventionCenter. Cinematographers and their collaborators will share experiencesand insights on a wide-range of subjects involving the convergence ofart and technology. The schedule for Friday, June 27 is as follows:

12:30-1:30 p.m. @ ICG/ASC Theater
THE ASC AT 85 AND ITS VISION FOR THE FUTURE: An open forum moderated byCurtis Clark, ASC (Alamo Bay, Dominick and Eugene, etc.) will discussthe mission of a new technology committee organized by the AmericanSociety of Cinematographers on the eve of the organization’s 85thanniversary. The committee includes some 50 cinematographers andtechnology thought leaders from all sectors of the industry. They areinvestigating such diverse areas as digital and film cameras, digitalintermediate and digital projection technologies. Various committeemembers will participate in an open-ended discussion about standardsand practices.

THE SUPER 16 REVOLUTION: Advances in camera, film and postproductiontechnologies are fueling a revolution in the use of the Super 16format. Russ Alsobrook, ASC (Romy and Michele), Michael Goi, ASC(Red River), John Inwood (Scrubs), Michael Price(Gilmore Girls) and Steven Shaw, ASC, (Tremors), will discusstheir experiences and answer your questions about shooting narrativefilms in Super 16 format.

LARRY BRIDGES: A ROADMAP TO THE FUTURE OF INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING: LarryBridges is a renown TV commercial editor and director, and founder ofRed Car, one of the advertising industry’s top postproductionhouses. Bridges will discuss why and how he produced an extraordinaryindependent feature film called 12. He wrote the script, produced,directed and shot the film. It took him 10 years, mainly working onweekends, using the city of Los Angeles as his backlot. Bridges spenttwo years editing 12. He is using innovative “guerillamarketing” techniques to bring 12 to the marketplace.

ICG FILM SHOWCASE: ICG National President George Spiro Dibie, ASC willpresent the winners of the 7th Annual ICG Film Showcase. The finalistsin this competition are the best of the best in the opinion ofworld-class cinematographers on the jury. This year’s winners areEric Roy Anderson for The Yellow Bird, Mark Gilmer for TheGood Things, Brian Glover for Salvation, Alec Hirschfeld forAccabonac Harbor, Samuel Levy for Diet, Scott Peck forMarked, Christopher Probst for The Night Before, andMariana Sanchez de Antunano for Naiad. Each short film is 30min. or less.

VILMOS ZSIGMOND, ASC -THE DEER HUNTER RETROSPECTIVE: VilmosZsigmond, ASC teamed up with Michael Cimino to produce The Deer Huntersome 25 years ago. Their collaborative effort made an indelibleimpression on audiences and a profound impact on the art and craft ofcinematography. Zsigmond will share his memories of the making of thatmilestone film and discuss his vision for the future.

THE ART OF GREAT COMMERCIALS: How do you grab and hold theaudience’s attention and tell a compelling story that makes amemorable impression in a mere 30 seconds? What can you learn fromshooting commercials? Bill Bennett, Matty Libatique, ASC, Daniel Pearland John Schwartzman, ASC, will answer those questions when theydiscuss the art of shooting great commercials.

THE ART OF LIGHTING: Some people compare lighting to painting. Otherssay lighting is a language used to express information and emotionalcontent without words. Some vendors and auteurs claim that lighting isan obsolete notion with the advent of digital technology. RobbieGreenberg, ASC, Michael Goi, ASC, Gil Hubbs, ASC, Shelly Johnson, ASC,Laszlo Kovacs, ASC, Stephen Lighthill, ASC, Brian J. Reynolds, WallyPfister, ASC, Dante Spinotti, ASC, AIC and Amy Vincent, ASC will sharetheir insights and answer questions about the art of lighting.

DIGITALLY SPEAKING -USING STILL IMAGES: Some of the industry’stop still photographers and publicists will show examples and discusshow to use images for publicity, advertising, posters and otherimaginative ways for large and small budget films (Indie films) and TV.Moderated by Marcia Reed (still photographer) and Jess Garcia(publicist). Panelists include publicists Robert Hoffman and Dan Doran,and still photographers Bryon Cohen, Elliott Marks and Danny Feld.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS: There is a new generation ofextraordinarily talented cinematographers who are beginning to maketheir marks. We will explore their vision of the future in aconversation featuring Matty Libatique, ASC (Phone Booth, Gothika),Daryn Okada, ASC (Dawson’s Creek, Paparazzi), Wally Pfister, ASC(The Italian Job, Memento), Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC (Frida, 8 Mile)and Lisa Wiegand (Seventy, Cherry Bomb).

A CONVERSATION WITH BILL FRAKER, ASC, BSC: ASC President Richard Crudowill moderate a discussion with the recipient of the 2003 LifetimeAchievement Award from the Camerimage International Festival of the Artof Cinematography. Fraker has earned five Oscar® nominations forRosemary’s Baby, Heaven Can Wait, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, 1941and War Games. He is currently teaching the next generation offilmmakers at University of Southern California. Fraker will share hismemories, insights and future vision for the art and craft ofcinematography.

THE COLLABORATIVE PROCESS/ PART 1—DONALD M. MORGAN, ASC: DonaldM. Morgan, ASC will discuss the collaborative art of cinematography.Morgan’s credits include Sheila Levine is Dead and Living in NewYork and Starman. He is one of only two cinematographers to earn fourASC Outstanding Achievement Awards (Ruby Ridge: An American Tragedy,Geronimo, Dillinger and Murder in Mississippi). Morgan recently earnedkudos for his Showtime movie Out of the Ashes.

THE COLLABORATIVE PROCESS/ PART 2—TOM DEL RUTH, ASC AND THOMASSCHLAMME: Tom Del Ruth, ASC (The West Wing, ER, The X-Files, Stand ByMe) is one of only two cinematographers to earn four ASC OutstandingAchievement Awards. Del Ruth will discuss the collaborative process oftelling great stories with moving images with Emmy-Award winningdirector and producer Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing, ER, Sports Night,Tracey Takes On).
