Fujitsu Delivers First Full-Speed 3Gb Serial SCSI Hard Disk Drive Prototypes to HP

Storage Leaders Begin Testing Serial Attached SCSI Hard DiskDrives for Enterprise Solutions

San Jose, CA, — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc.(FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard disk drives andcomputer peripherals, announced that its small form factor (SFF),full-speed 3Gb/second serial attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk driveinterface is being tested for next generation enterprise storagesolutions by HP.

The Fujitsu SAS interface leverages the recognized benefits of SCSIwith the latest serial technology and Fujitsu expects SAS to become theenterprise I/O interface of choice for the new 2.5" small form factorenterprise hard disk drives. HP's testing of Fujitsu's 3Gb/second SASinterface in enterprise solutions is intended to take advantage ofreduced form factor hard disk drives and the increased performanceassociated with serial attached SCSI.

"Fujitsu is poised to lead the small form factor SAS hard disk drivemarket due in large part to its relationship with technology innovatorslike HP," said Mike Chenery, vice president, advanced productengineering, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "Fujitsu and HPrecognize the impact of these hard disk drives on the market. Fujitsu'ssmall form factor serial attached SCSI hard disk drives are nearly onethird the size of current enterprise hard drives allowing manufacturesto build solutions with more disk drives, lower heat dissipation, andlower acoustics."

Fujitsu's 2.5" small form factor serial attached SCSI drives are thenext generation enterprise hard disk drives created for storage marketsthat can take advantage of higher performance, higher capacity andsmaller footprint hard disk drives. Fujitsu's small form factorenterprise drive will offer up 73.5GB of storage coupled with a SASinterface capable of a 300MB/s data transfer rate at a full3Gb/second.

"HP is driving the adoption rate of small form factor solutions forour customers requiring the latest in enterprise storage connectivityand performance," said Paul Perez, vice president of storage, networks, and infrastructure, Industry Standard Servers, HP. "HP views small formfactor SAS hard disk drives as the building block for variousenterprise data center and subsystem applications. By working closelywith Fujitsu to receive the first 3Gb/second small form factor SASinterface, we ensure that our industry-standard HP ProLiant server andstorage customers will be able receive solutions that are tested andready to handle the rigors of 24/7 data storage and retrieval."
