Edgeworx Launches Definition, a Longform Digital Solutions Company With Projects at Sundance
The launch of Definition, a new digital solutions company, wasannounced today by Edgeworx. The new company will work with directorsand producers to plan and manage the digital filmmaking process fromconcept to delivery. The first project Definition is working on, theUSA Films feature release The Kid Stays in the Picture, makesits World Premiere on January 18th at the 2002 Sundance FilmFestival.
Stemming from Edgeworx’s years of experience in digital postand graphics, Definition offers services that include efficientplanning, production, and post solutions utilizing new technologies anddeveloped digital production processes that address the needs of thetraditional filmmaker, as well as production packages, digitalfinishing, HD conversions and film output.
Definition works with filmmakers early in the production process toprovide a seamless flow from pre-production through to film output."Definition will be a resource for all those who wish to begin workingin DTV formats, including high-definition," says Definition partnerScott Klein. "We’re looking to demystify the high-definitionprocess for filmmakers interested in taking advantage of its productionand post benefits."
The Kid Stays in the Picture is directed by AcademyAward-nominated filmmakers Brett Morgen and Nanette Burstein (On theRopes). Adapted from Robert Evans's tell-all autobiography, thefilm traces the meteoric rise, fall, and rise again of the legendaryHollywood producer who lived the life that many only dream of. Themovie takes the audience on an intimate journey into the mind of thisHollywood legend. Definition assembled and polished the entire film ina digital format before outputting high-definition screening reels(1080i and 24p versions) and supervising the creation of a filmprint.
Services also included transferring all the footage to digital frommyriad standard definition formats; scanning thousands of photos; andcreating graphics, transitions and animation.
Edgeworx has worked on another film screening at this year’sSundance Film Festival: Blue Vinyl, a documentary by JudithHefand and Dan Gold. For the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, Edgeworxprovided digital compositing and animation for Hedwig and the AngryInch, winner of the Festival¹s prestigious Audience and BestDirector awards. Edgeworx also created titles for David Kartch'sStudent Academy Award-winning Zen and the Art ofLandscaping.
Alton Christensen and Dave Tecson, Edgeworx’s partners, areacknowledged industry leaders in the introduction of desktop video tothe high-end broadcast market. Tecson was on the initial softwaredevelopment team while he was employed by CoSA, After Effect's creator.Christensen, a multiple Emmy Award winner, became enthralled with theAfter Effects product when it was first introduced.
"All too often, we don't get involved in the digital filmmakingprocess until the end," notes Christensen. "We end up spending our timefixing problems which we’d rather help prevent."
