Gary Rydstrom to Receive Career Achievement Award

Los Angeles, October 1, 2003--Seven-time Oscar winning re-recordingmixer and sound designer Gary Rydstrom, CAS, will receive the CinemaAudio Society (CAS) 2004 Career Achievement Award, it was announced byCAS President Richard Lightstone. The presentation will be made at theorganization’s 40th Anniversary Awards Banquet Saturday, February21st., in the Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel.

"Gary has made significant contributions to the professionalstandards of movie sound," says Lightstone. "He has amassed anextraordinary body of work."

Rydstrom has earned seven Academy Awards, four for Best Sound andthree for Best Sound Editing, out of a total of 11 nominations. He hasalso received two CAS Awards and two British Academy Awards. His BestSound Oscars were for “Terminator 2,” “JurassicPark,” “Titanic,” and “Saving PrivateRyan.” His Best Sound Editing Oscars were for “Terminator2,” “Jurassic Park” and “Saving PrivateRyan.”

Rydstrom, who is currently Director of Creative Operations atSkywalker Sound, becomes the 22nd. CAS Career Achievement honoree. Lastyear’s recipient was Charles Wilborn, C.A.S. Lightstone pointsout that the Biltmore Hotel was selected as this year’s site forthe awards because of its history with the Oscars. It was in theCrystal Room in 1927 that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts andSciences was formed and the design for the Oscar statuette was sketchedon a linen napkin. The awards were presented there in 1931, 1935, 1939,1941, 1942 and again in 1977.

C.A.S., which is dedicated to the advancement of sound, iscomprised of more than 400 professionals from the motion picture andtelevision sound crafts. Founded in 1964, its goal is to educate soundmixers on new technological advances through the interchange ofinformation, seminars and workshops.
