Kodak Names Student Scholarship Winners

LOS ANGELES, September 25--Bram Tihany, a Pratt Institute filmstudent, won top honors in the annual Eastman Scholarship competition.The prize includes a $5,000 scholarship and participation in the KodakEmerging Filmmakers Showcase at the Cannes International Film Festival.The runner-ups were Qiang Huang of Temple University, Kourtney Kellerof Pratt Institute and Changhee Chun of University of NorthCarolina-Greensboro who all received a $2,000 scholarship. Scott Foleyof University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Alison Stewart of StanfordUniversity received $1,000 scholarships.

"These talented students bode well for the future of our industry,"says John Mason, director of the Kodak Student Filmmaker Program. "Theywere chosen by the judges from a very competitive field, which includedmore than 60 candidates recommended by film school faculties. Our goalis to give tangible support to the next generation of filmmakers at acritical stage in their careers."

Scholarships are provided through an endowment fund created byKodak, and administered by the University Film and Video Foundation(UFVF), a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance thestudy, practice, and preservation of motion picture and videoproduction. The jury consisted of professional filmmakers andeducators.

The winner and runners-up are invited to participate in a weeklongmentorship program sponsored by the International CinematographersGuild. The Guild arranges for the recipients to visit sets, meetcinematographers and other filmmakers in Hollywood.

"Since we established this program, approximately 50 young peoplehave received scholarships and participated in the mentorship program,"says Mason. "Many former recipients have told us that the mentorshipprogram has been invaluable. It gives them a close-up look atfilmmaking in the real world, and it enables them to network with someof the industry's most talented filmmakers."

Kodak inaugurated the Eastman Scholarship Program in 1991 forundergraduate and graduate students at universities offering degrees infilm in the United States and Canada. The scholarships augment filmgrants and discount programs provided to qualified film schools. Kodakalso sponsors guest lecturers in addition to providing educationalprograms and materials.
