Richard E. Wiley to Receive NAB Distinguished Service Award
Richard E. Wiley, senior partner at Wiley, Rein & Fielding, hasbeen selected to receive the 2002 Distinguished Service Award presentedby the National Association of Broadcasters. The award will bepresented at the All-Industry Opening Ceremony, April 8 at NAB 2002 inLas Vegas.
Each year, the NAB DSA award recognizes an individual who has madesignificant and lasting contributions to U.S. broadcasting. Recentrecipients of the DSA include Radio One founder and chairpersonCatherine Hughes, Hearst Corp. President and CEO Frank Bennack, and TheCox Family. Other recipients include Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrowand Bob Hope.
As a former Chairman, Commissioner and General Counsel of theFederal Communications Commission (1970-77), Wiley was a leading forcein the agency's initial efforts to foster increased competition andreduced regulation in the communications field. The Wiley, Rein &Fielding law firm is one of the largest communications practices in theUnited States.
Wiley also led the FCC's Advisory Committee and Advanced TelevisionServices, which resulted in the government's adoption of the standardfor digital and high definition television in the U.S.
"Dick Wiley has been a lawyer's lawyer, a leader without peer, and atrusted friend to broadcasters for three decades," said NAB Presidentand CEO Edward O. Fritts. "With the DSA Award, we salute his lifelongcontributions to this great industry."
Wiley has been recognized as one of the nation's "100 mostinfluential" lawyers by The National Law Journal. He has been profiledin The New York Times ("Telecommunications' Ubiquitous Man ofInfluence"), The Los Angeles Times ("The Sixth Commissioner"), and TheAmerican Lawyer ("Brand Name of Communications Law"). In recognition ofhis nine-year service as Chairman of the FCC's Advisory Committee onDigital Television, he received an Emmy from the Academy of TelevisionArts and Sciences. He is also a member of Broadcasting & Cable's"Hall of Fame", and was named by that publication as one of the 100"Men of the Century."
Wiley graduated with distinction from Northwestern (B.S. and J.D.degrees) and holds a Masters Degree in Law (LL.M.) from Georgetown. Hehas received distinguished alumnus awards from each University as wellas Honorary Doctor of Laws from Catholic University.
NAB 2002 takes place April 6-11 in Las Vegas (exhibits open April8).
