IBM Offers Low Cost Server with Self Managing Properties

IBM introduces server for small business for less than $700

IBM announced what it calls the industry's most powerful smallbusiness server that delivers more processing power -- along with selfmanagement technologies -- at prices starting at $699.

The new IBM x200VL is the only system available in the entry-levelspace that offers businesses the power of an 850 MHz Intel Celeronprocessor and 20 GB IDE storage. Designed as a general purpose orinterconnected department server, the x200VL system features IBMDirector, an intelligent system management program with Project eLizaself-diagnosing and self-healing technologies.

Project eLiza is IBM's program aimed at creating a world ofself-managing systems and technologies that enhance performance.Project eLiza technologies featured in the new system includePredictive Failure Analysis, which enables a server to self-diagnosepotential problems and then alert staff so they can avoid a potentialserver crash. Also included in the x200VL are Software Rejuvenation,which can automatically predict and repair software problems beforethey occur, and IBM ServerGuide software that simplifies system set-upand installation.

Offering native support for Linux and Microsoft Windows, as well assupport for additional operating systems, the x200VL gives customersthe flexibility to choose their operating systems and applications thatbest meet their needs.

IBM also announced that eServer x200 and x220 are now available withthe new Intel Pentium III-S processors with 512K cache and a speed of1.26 Ghz.

And, it is offering small business customers an integratednetworking solution with Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 preloadedon the x220 and x232.

This solution offers enterprise level products designed specificallyfor small business and includes Microsoft Windows 2000, Exchange Server2000 and SQL Server 2000, plus Windows 2000 Server-based solutions fore-mail, fax, databases, and secure, shared Internet access. Smallbusinesses can also take advantage of the optional IBM and SBS 2000ServicePac, which offers incident-based support for SBS 2000 and 5/24telephone support.
