Student Academy Award Winners To Be Featured in Kodak Showcase at Cannes 2003
Four gold medalists and the Honorary Foreign Film Award winner inthe 29th Annual Student Academy Awards competition have been invited topresent clips at the Kodak Emerging Filmmaker Showcase during the 56thCannes International Film Festival in 2003.
The winners are Kazuo Ohno (Columbia University) for "For Our Man"in the Alternative Category; Don Phillips Jr. (Ringling School of Artand Design)for "Passing Moments" in the Animation Category; Pin Pin Tan(Northwestern University) for "Moving House" in the DocumentaryCategory; Jessica Sharzer (New York University) for "The Wormhole" inthe Narrative Category; and Martin Strange-Hansen (National Film Schoolof Denmark) for "Feeding Desire," received the Honorary Foreign Filmaward.
"We believe that this achievement of excellence deserves to berewarded," says John Mason, manager of the Kodak Student FilmmakerProgram. "The Kodak Showcase at Cannes provides a platform for theseyoung filmmakers to show what they can do, and it also gives talentscouts an opportunity to meet the next generation of filmmakers."
The gold, silver and bronze winners in each category participated ina week of industry-related activities and social events culminating onJune 9 with the awards presentation ceremony at the Academy's SamuelGoldwyn Theater.
Kodak hosted a champagne brunch on Saturday June 8, with thenominees in all categories and members of the Academy. Besidestrophies, gold medal winners receive $5,000; silver winners are awarded$3,000, and bronze takes home $2,000.
The students initially competed in one of three regionalcompetitions. Each region was permitted to send the Academy as many asthree films in each of the four categories. Those films were screenedand winners were selected by Academy members.
The Kodak Student Filmmaker Program was launched in 1991. It hasprovided scholarships for young filmmakers, numerous product grants,and discounts for film schools and their students. Kodak also sponsorsguest lecturers and provides schools with an array of educationalmaterials and programs.
