Field Archive Media
A group of eight Japanese companies — including Canon, Hitachi,
Pioneer, Sanyo, and Sharp — proposed the iVDR format in 2002. The
format is basically a ruggedized, removable hard-disk drive with copy
protection, and one of its original uses was to transfer and playback
consumer media. At the 2008 NAB Show, Maxell will be showing a version
configured for backup and archiving in the field. The product will
connect via a bidirectional USB or eSATA adapter to a shoulder-mounted
camcorder to offer 10-bit, 4:2:2 HD recording. The drive currently
offers 160GB of storage.
