While Maxell has released versions of its Professional Disc system for use with Sony's XDCAM system, this past December brought the maturation of this unique technology with the release of the Professional Disc PD-50DL. Production camera operators will appreciate the PD-50's ample storage, more than double that of the original's 23.3GB. The new disc system employs a dual-layer rewritable optical disc with a 50GB recording capacity. Lots of tech development went into it — including a new blue-violet laser, more precise spin coating, and an increase in durability of the disc's hard coating.
