Shoot Tools: Ikonoskop A-cam dII
Super-16-sized sensor allows the use of film lenses. Price: $10,000 (estimated)
While Red Digital Cinema has garnered a lot of interest in alternative camcorder design over the past couple of years, other small manufacturers are now distributing final product — including Silicon Imaging with its SI-2K. You can now look to Sweden-based Ikonoskop too, which announced that it would be delivering the first of its A-cam dII cameras by press time. It's a bit quirky looking, but the compact, ergonomic design benefits by taking a step that no other manufacturer has tried yet: removing the onboard CPU or other specialized silicon that is required to add compression to the images in realtime. These run hot and chew up a lot of power. Instead, Ikonoskop employs Digital Negative (DNG), an open standard being pushed by Adobe, to deliver 60 RAW frames of 1080p video per second.
