NextComputing Pro HD and Kulabyte XStream Live 2.0
After checking out some of the latest hardware and software at NAB Show 2009, you''ll have to admit that streaming live video has come a long way since the first efforts of a little more than decade ago. (Check out Jan Ozer''s useful show blogs on streaming.)
Location production especially benefits from the new trend. A good example of innovative coding combining with capable portable hardware was on display at the NextComputing booth. The
New Hampshire-based company, which makes custom servers as well as portable computer gear, collaborated with Kulabyte to demo the latter company''s XStream Live 2.0 realtime HD H.264 Adobe Flash video encoding and streaming software running on NextComputing''s Pro HD portable system.
That luggable workstation/server features all the usual CPU options along with a new choice of Intel''s potent Xeon 5200 Series processors; hard drives (more than 2TB internal storage); and operating systems (Windows, Solaris, and various Linux flavors). It is also offered with an optional integrated 17in. WUXGA+ (1920x1200) touchscreen that might be useful during location production.
Robin Rush, senior VP of sales at Kulabyte, describes the combo as the smallest, most mobile live HD Flash encoding and streaming production unit available. Rush points to production partner Allied Pixel''s decision to use the two products for location production since it “fits in an airline overhead compartment.” “I bet your live HD encoder can''t do that,” Rush says. “That''s all at lower bit rates for Flash HD than ever before.”
