Lower-cost, sophisticated storage options open up as vendors look to match their offerings to an inexorable fact of tech life: the continually dropping prices for hard drives.
MicroNet Technology is a top player here. The Torrance, Calif.-based company is expanding its MaxNAS line to offer more potent gear for small and medium-sized businesses with its first rackmount MaxNAS units. These latest MaxNAS systems come in 1RU (MaxNAS4R) and 2RU (MaxNAS8R) versions that hold four and eight 3.5in. SATA drives, respectively. Since you can now use either 1TB or 2TB drives to populate, we're talking up to 16TB of shared storage.
Want more? The MaxNAS appliances can be stacked with up to six devices per rack, all managed as a single volume of up to 96TB.
Built-in iSCSI targets allow you to forgo complex network topologies and build an affordable IP SAN alternative. Servers can then be configured to access the device as direct-attached storage over LAN or Internet via MaxNAS' high-speed Gigabit Ethernet connection.
Critical componentsincluding drive bays, power supplies, and cooling fansare built for 24/7 uptimes since they are redundant and hot-swappable.
