With external storage systems approaching commodity pricing — bare drives are there already — buyers might as well look to other differentiating factors. Reliability and throughput rates are key, but why shouldn't cool design count too? That's just what G-Technology thinks. The company, a spin-off of well established storage maker Medéa, recently introduced two drives in its G-Drive line. Each unit uses sleek aluminum cases — think Apple G5 design — to house FireWire (both 400 and 800) and/or USB 2.0 interfaced RAID arrays. That aluminum shield helps dissipate heat — basically a fan-less cooling system. That means you can stick it on the desktop without the distraction of whirring fan blades, something few other systems can boast about. Other features include Mac OS X and Windows XP support and compatibility with Kensington's security lock system.
