Storage area networks are no longer a technology for high-end studios only. The falling costs of switches, hubs, and HBAs (host bus adapters — the cards placed in a PC or Mac to interface with storage) make SANs an attractive choice for facilities with high-bandwidth needs. SAN management software, however, can still be pricey, while limiting the type of connections you can deploy. Tiger Technology's MetaSAN 2.0 offers one solution to this dilemma. Alexander Lefterov, the company's co-founder and CTO, says the hardware-agnostic file sharing software is flexible, as it offers compatibility with Fibre Channel, SCSI, and Ethernet networks. New features include cross-platform operating system support, per-node bandwidth allocation, Avid Unity MediaNet storage virtualization, and native OS file system and rights management.
