Face it, the microphones on most DV camcorders don't offer the
quality that a specialized product can deliver. Here's an alternative:
Audio-Technica's AT897 Line+ Gradient condenser mic. The
company's 40 years of audio experience are evident in the design of
this short (11in.) shotgun micro-phone, which mounts on most
camcorders. The light AT897 doesn't add much weight to a camcorder, and
the mic's length keeps it out of most framing. The company cites the
mic's specs as top notch; check specs online for the
“excellent” on-axis response and the capable side and rear
sound rejection. The AT897 includes a low-frequency roll-off switch
(reduces pickup of certain sounds), a foam windscreen, and stand
adapter.
