Converter boxes are a requirement if you intend to connect various externally controllable devices. Convergent Design's SD-Connect, for example, supports 1394 to RS-422 tape deck command translation. Now a new software release features RS-422 to 1394 tape deck control translation as well, allowing control of a consumer DV deck or camcorder from an RS-422 controller, including most SDI-based editing systems, says the company. Fast-forward, rewind, and shuttle are among the many deck controls supported.
