When it debuted, one unique feature of Panasonic's Varicam HD camcorder caught the imagination of shooters: The VTR section records at a constant 60fps. Why's that important? It meant that in post, users could pull any combination of those frames as desired to vary the frame rate from 4fps to 60fps, as well as adjusting the shutter speed from 0.8 percent to 97.2 percent of the frame rate.
Now, Clarity Image improves on that with its Varispeed Controller. Although ramping (changing film speeds during shooting) is a standard capability for high-end film cameras, the Burbank-based company now delivers the ability to program the Varicam to create a controlled frame rate change over a defined period of time.
The Clarity Image Model VSC-27 also controls the Varicam's time-lapse recorder. Simply program the device with the duration of the scene and how long you want it to last on screen, and the VSC-27 programs the camera's intervalometer accordingly. www.clarityimage.com
