As ever-smaller video camcorders become standard fare for many productions, 35mm film cameras must keep up with the new form factor. Aaton's innovative 35-III can certainly be relied upon, but the cameras don't have wide distribution. Now Arri finally comes up with its own nimble 35mm, the Arriflex 235. This lightweight, low-profile camera slings comfortably over the shoulder.
While blimped Aaton 35-IIIs are popular for indie productions, Arri pegs the new camera as MOS (“mit out sound,” as the old joke goes) models only, with Steadicam, handheld, car rigs, and other C camera jobs the most likely applications. The 235 is flexible, too, because it uses accessories and magazines from the 435 and Arri 3 series. Also available: Super 35, speed ramps, and a 3-perf option. www.arri.com
