Edit Tools: NewTek
Offers live web streaming and recording functions. Price: $495
Some folks claim that the NLE competition is over. Unless you buy an editing product with a name that begins with Adobe, Apple, or Avid, they say, you won't be in the race. Well, don't tell that to NewTek, whose recently announced SpeedEdit turned heads at NAB. The low-cost, resolution-independent video editor is flat-out fast on almost any recent PC workstation. It handles today's multiple formats, of course (HDV, DV, MPEG-2, AVI, QuickTime, and other popular video formats). One interesting approach: All editing functions can be performed directly within its timeline and storyboard interface, avoiding the intermediate steps of transcoding or pre-trimming content.
