According to an HP blog I came across, the IT group at DreamWorks Animation had been trolling eBay for the past few years to buy up all the used CRT displays they could find. Why? As many have claimed, price-competitive LCD monitors can't accurately replicate color like a good CRT can — a critical need for the animators at DreamWorks. Although high-end LCD models from companies such as Sony and Cine-tal are said to do the trick, they're expensive. Working together with DreamWorks to solve the gap between mission-critical and affordable, HP recently released the LP2480zx, a color-critical 30-bit LCD display that the company claims is priced at less than a quarter of the cost of competing offerings. Said to offer a range of more than 1 billion colors, the LED-backlit display offers “visibly deeper” reds, blues, and greens; blacks that are “four times darker” than those of other LCD monitors; and whites that are adjustable.
